Invasive primary producers modulate carbon fluxes and associated carbon budgets in temperate shallow lakes.

Lowland shallow lakes are the receiving environments of nutrients and organic carbon from the catchment area. In temperate areas, the synerg … rees of invasive SAV and cyanobacteria, basing on annual carbon pools (input, output, gas exchange, burial) and aquatic metabolism. The oligo-mesotrophic lake behaved as an annual CO2 and CH4 source toward the atmosphere (81.2 ± 14.8 g C m-2 yr-1), mainly due to dominant benthic heterotrophic metabolism, whereas the mesotrophic lake behaved as an annual …

Heterogeneous distributions of black carbon in sediments from three Asian mangrove wetlands.

Black carbon (BC) is produced by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels and plays an important role in global climate change … e influenced by long-distance transport and has undergone more pronounced photodegradation prior to burial, resulting in the lowest aromaticity, as indicated by the (B5CA + B6CA)/BPCAs ratio. We demonstrated BC as an important but heterogeneous component of the carbon pool in mangrove sediments.

The Human Remains From the MIS 6 Site of Grotta Del Poggio (Cilento, Southern Italy): A Taxonomic and Chronological Reassessment.

OBJECTIVES: Grotta del Poggio is a key site for exploring the Middle Paleolithic in southern Italy, as it contains a pivotal anthropogenic deposit, mainly attributed to MIS 6, while in the Metal Ages, the cavity was used as a burial place. Excavations in the cave's deposit led to the discovery of a human molar and a human talus. A preliminary morphological evaluation of the talus concluded that it belonged to Homo sapiens. Conversely, the molar exhibited Neanderthal-like morphology. Here, we perform a taxonomic and chronological reassessment of these human remains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The …

Urbanization and genetic homogenization in the medieval Low Countries revealed through a ten-century paleogenomic study of the city of Sint-Truiden.

BACKGROUND: Processes shaping the formation of the present-day population structure in highly urbanized Northern Europe are still poorly und … nic ancestry. Although we find evidence of a Yersinia pestis infection in 5 of the 58 late medieval burials, we were unable to detect a major population-scale impact of the second plague pandemic on genetic diversity or on the elevated differentiation of immunity genes. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that the genetic homogenization process in a medieva …

Investigating the association between intestinal parasite infection and cribra orbitalia in the medieval population of Cambridge, UK.

OBJECTIVE: Cribra orbitalia is believed to be a skeletal indicator of chronic anaemia, scurvy, rickets or related metabolic diseases. It has … dulthood. METHODS: We undertook parasite analysis of the pelvic sediment and control samples of 46 burials with intact orbital roofs. RESULTS: Human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and/or whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) were identified in the pelvic sediment of 22 individuals, and cribra orbitalia noted in 11 individuals. Barnards test showed no associ …

Evaluation and Application of Efficient Gelled Acid for Carbonate Formation Fracturing.

In the middle and west of Sichuan Basin, the targeted carbonate formation exhibits features of deep burial and high temperatures at present. In order to obtain better acid fracturing results, the efficient gelled acid developed was investigated based on the carbonate formation characteristics. At the same time, the field application was conducted to prove its adaptability and effectiveness. The high-effective thickener is mainly polymerized by DMC and an allyl octadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide monomer and a very small amount of diallyl polyethylene glycol. The efficient gelled acid has good…

Survival in Mudejar Spain in the Middle Ages (thirteenth-fourteenth centuries): Ancient Rare Diseases-an uncommon diagnosis in archaeological human remains.

PURPOSE: The finding of severe skeletal alterations in ancient remains could give us useful information not only about the pathologies of the individual per se, as it could infer the state of health of a population. METHODS: From the findings of the Mudéjar Cemetery of Uceda (Guadalajara, Central Spain) where a total of 116 burials with almost complete skeleton were recovered, an interesting individual is presented (palaeopathological perspective). The individual 114UC corresponds to a male of 20-25 years old and its age goes back to the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries. RESULTS: The first in…

Two Obstacles in Response Efforts to the Ebola Epidemic in the Provinces of North Kivu and Ituri in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Denial of and Rumors about the Disease.

Denial and rumors are two major obstacles impairing the implementation of activities in response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic. … EVD, as well as the epidemic, Ebola treatment centers, hospitals, vaccines, and safe and dignified burials have been identified. Rumors about the EVD and the response, spread by clerics, traditional therapists, men, and women, including healthcare professionals in focus group discussions, portrayed the EVD as an invention, as if the virus had been creat …

A Homicide in Disguise: How the Autopsy Dug up Clues.

An autopsy is performed in the occurrence of an out-of-the-ordinary manner of death where the cause of death is unclear. Through a detailed medicolegal investigation, it differentiates homicide from suicides or accidents. However, some people do not acknowledge its importance due to the conflict between science and religion. This is especially true for countries with a lack of education and awareness. The family of the deceased may be unmindful of medicolegal matters and hesitate to allow for an autopsy. In the instance that burial takes place before an autopsy was performed, the medicolegal o…

Molecular clocks in ancient proteins: Do they reflect the age at death even after millennia?

Age at death estimation in cases of human skeletal finds is an important task in forensic medicine as well as in anthropology. In forensic medicine, methods based on "molecular clocks" in dental tissues and bone play an increasing role. The question, whether these methods are applicable also in cases with post-depositional intervals far beyond the forensically relevant period, was investigated for two "protein clocks", the accumulation of D-aspartic acid (D-Asp) and the accumulation of pentosidine (Pen) in dentine. Eight teeth of skeletons from different burial sites in Austria and with post-d…

Effect assessment of chelators on bioaccessible and total chromium extraction in soils polluted by chromite processing wastes.

Solid wastes from chromium-processing facilities, when used as fill material, have generated chromium point source contamination of soils and groundwaters, that remains after decades in many urban and peri urban areas all over the world, causing environmental impacts that need to be addressed in a sustainable economic, social and environmental way. Representative surface soil samples, from a polluted area affected by chromite wastes burials, were used to carry on a feasibility study on Phytoextraction applicability, and chelating agents' selection to reduce environmental risks, considering chr…

Lessons learned by surveillance during the tail-end of the Ebola outbreak in Guinea, June-October 2015: a case series.

BACKGROUND: By the end of the 2013–2016 West African Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreaks, a total of 3814 cases (probable and confirmed) and 2544 deaths were reported in Guinea. Clearly, surveillance activities aiming at stopping human-to-human transmission have been the breakthrough of EVD outbreak management, but their application has been at times easier said than done. This article presents five confirmed or probable EVD cases that arose in Conakry towards the end of the Guinea epidemic, which demonstrate flaws in surveillance and follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION: For case 1, safe burial requ…

Molecular history of plague.

Plague, a deadly zoonose caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, has been firmly documented in 39 historical burial sites in Eurasia that date from the Bronze Age to two historical pandemics spanning the 6th to 18th centuries. Palaeomicrobiologic data, including gene and spacer sequences, whole genome sequences and protein data, confirmed that two historical pandemics swept over Europe from probable Asian sources and possible two-way-ticket journeys back from Europe to Asia. These investigations made it possible to address questions regarding the potential sources and routes of transmission b…

Furthermore, it was observed that the magnitude of the effect is correlated neither with the burial of the mutation sites nor with the basic amino acid physicochemical property change. Mutations that strongly perturb the immediate structural features were found to have little effect on folding free energy, while very conservative mutations resulte …

Dicrocoelium dendriticum found in a Bronze Age cemetery in western Iran in the pre-Persepolis period: The oldest Asian palaeofinding in the present human infection hottest spot region.

Dicrocoeliasis of animals and humans is caused by trematode species of the genus Dicrocoelium, mainly Dicrocoelium dendriticum in ruminants of the Holarctic region. D. dendriticum may be considered an old parasite, probably related to the appearance and diversification of Eurasian ovicaprines, occurred 14.7-14.5 million years ago. The oldest palaeoparasitological findings of Dicrocoelium in domestic animals and humans date from more than 5000 years BC in Europe. Eggs of D. dendriticum have been found in a burial of a Bronze Age cemetery (2600-2200 BC) close to Yasuj city, southwestern Iran. Th…

Facial reconstruction of an 11-year-old female resident of 430 BC Athens.

Although modern standards of ideal proportions and facial esthetics are based mostly on observations of human faces as depicted in Classical Greek masterpieces of art, the real faces of ordinary ancient Greeks have, until now, remained elusive and subject to the imagination. Objective forensic techniques of facial reconstruction have never been applied before, because human skeletal material from Classical Greece has been extremely scarce, since most decent burials of that time required cremation. Here, the authors show stage by stage the facial reconstruction of an 11-year-old girl whose skul…
