Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) primarily infects neonatal piglets causing catastrophic effects on the global pig farming industry. PEDV infects piglets through the nasal cavity, a process in which dendritic cells (DCs) play an important role. However, neonatal piglets have fewer nasal DCs. This study found that subepithelial CD3+ T cells mediated PEDV invasion through the nasal cavity in neonatal piglets. A mediastinal tumor in a 49-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis is reported. The tumor was well-demarcated and located in the supero-anterior mediastinum. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of thymic and neuroblastic tumor components, the latter of which consisted of immature and maturing neuronal cells, abundant neuropils, and Schwannian stroma. The two components intermingled with each other inside the tumor capsule. The tumor was diagnosed as thymoma with a ganglioneuroblastomatous component. The coexistence of epithelial and neuronal tissues in the thymic neoplasm is extremely rare.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the phenotypes of T lymphocytes in the intestinal epithelium in cirrhosis.
METHODS: Forty Wistar rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: cirrhosis group (n = 25) undergoing subcutaneous injection of 40% carbon tetrachloride twice a week for 10-12 weeks to establish cirrhosis models, and control group (n = 15). Twelve weeks later the rats were killed with their levers taken out. Analysis of the human androgen receptor gene (HUMARA) allows clonality to be assessed in essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV). We studied clonality in 44 patients with ET, 18 with PV and in 64 healthy controls. The X-chromosome inactivation pattern was analyzed by HUMARA-polymerase chain reaction on DNA from purified granulocytes, T lymphocytes and the CD3- fraction of mononuclear cells.

Five cases of exfoliative dermatitis in cats were presented from 1996 to 2002 in which a feline thymoma was found by postmortem or postsurgical examination. Besides abundant exfoliation of keratin squames and layers, the histologic picture of the skin revealed a similar pattern of interface dermatitis with predominantly CD3+ lymphocytes and fewer mast cells and plasma cells. In the epidermal basal layer a hydropic degeneration of keratinocytes was present. In all cases an infundibular lymphocytic mural folliculitis and absence of or drastic decrease in the number of sebaceous glands occurred.
