Scattering media such as fog or frosted glass diffusely spread transmitted light, making it difficult to observe objects located behind them. Deep-learning-based scattering imaging addresses this challenge by training neural networks on pairs of images before and after scattering, allowing reconstruction of the original object from a speckle image. Once trained, these models can reconstruct objects from unseen speckled images. However, when employing continual learning, deep learning models suffer from catastrophic forgetting, where learning a new task causes a degradation in performance on pr

Chiari malformation Type I (CMI) is a chronic pain syndrome associated with an increase in disability. However, little is known about the relationship between pain and disability among CMI patients. Using a web-based study of 372 adults diagnosed with CMI, we examined pain catastrophizing along with self-reported pain, head and neck disability, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and stress. Our primary analytic method was statistical mediation. Pain catastrophizing was positively correlated with self-reported pain, depression, anxiety, and disability. Finally, pain catastrophizing (rumination an

Extravasation is a rare but serious complication of intravenous injections, particularly with irritant or vesicant drugs, which can lead to significant tissue damage. In this case report, we describe a 14-year-old boy who developed calcinosis cutis due to extravasation of calcium gluconate, resulting in extensive tissue necrosis. Although surgical debridement and grafting were performed, the patient subsequently experienced iatrogenic post-surgical graft calcinosis cutis, leading to severe hand disability. This case underscores the importance of prompt recognition and management of extravasati

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is characterised by autonomous overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH), resulting in hypercalcemia and multisystem complications. Although routine calcium screening has reduced advanced skeletal disease in many regions, severe manifestations such as osteitis fibrosa cystica (OFC) still occur in resource-limited settings. We report a case of a woman in her 30s who presented with profound disability after 4-5 years of progressive bone pain, fatigue, proximal myopathy and eventual loss of independent ambulation, requiring her to drag herself on the ground. I

BACKGROUND: Patients with lung cancer often experience high levels of pain and recurrent pain episodes after thoracoscopic surgery, compromising their adherence to rehabilitation exercises and quality of life. Pain catastrophizing is defined as an exaggerated and negative mindset towards actual or anticipated pain and is one of the significant factors influencing pain. To date, prior investigations on pain catastrophizing have predominantly employed variable-centered approaches, focusing on broader population levels while neglecting individual specificity. Latent profile analysis represents an

ObjectiveEthnicity is associated with varying reporting of pain, coping mechanisms, and disease severity in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, few studies have evaluated its importance in ethnicity, particularly the Hispanic population. This study compares pain intensity (VAS), function (WOMAC), and pain catastrophizing (PCS) between Hispanic (HP) and non-Hispanic White patients (NHWP) stratified by socio-economic status (SES) and osteoarthritis radiographic K-L grade.MethodsA cross-sectional study of patients from a tertiary care clinic between July 2021 and December 2022 was p

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is a rare and life-threatening clinical emergency with multiorgan involvement. CAPS presents a significant clinical challenge due to its heterogeneous presentation and can resemble many other systemic thrombotic disorders. Prompt and intensive treatment is essential for patient survival. However, due to its rarity and heterogeneity, evidence-based protocols are scarce, and as such, diagnosis and management rely on guidelines stemming from low-level evidence and expert opinion. We present a patient with antiphospholipid syndrome who developed multio

Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) inhibition triggers a surge in origin firing, resulting in increased levels of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) that rapidly deplete all available RPA. This leaves ssDNA unprotected and susceptible to breakage, a phenomenon known as replication catastrophe. However, the mechanism by which unprotected ssDNA breaks remains unclear. Here, we reveal that APOBEC3B is the key enzyme targeting unprotected ssDNA at replication forks, initiating a reaction cascade that induces fork collapse and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) hyperactivation. Mechanisticall

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between mitotic catastrophe (MC) and apoptosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) using podophyllotoxin (PPT), a natural compound with antimitotic properties.
DESIGN: We evaluated the concentration-dependent effects of PPT on cell proliferation (CCK-8 and soft agar assays) and morphology (transmission electron microscopy). Mechanistic insights were obtained by assessing DNA damage (western blotting), cell cycle progression (sub-G1 analysis), and apoptosis-related protein activation in both 2D and 3D spheroid models of HSC-3 oral squamous

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is a rare, life-threatening variant of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) characterized by extensive thrombosis, multi-organ involvement, and high mortality. Despite advances in the understanding and management of APS, CAPS remains a challenge because of its rapidly progressive and potentially lethal course. We report the case of a 33-year-old man with a history of chronic venous insufficiency and recent surgery for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) who presented with abdominal pain, exertional dyspnoea, and rapidly worsening clini

CASE: A 19-year-old male patient with a thoracolumbar spinal fracture, who developed a recurrent postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) resulting in a progressive neurological deficit, is presented here. Detailed laboratory tests confirmed hemophilia C. Through a combination of meticulous medical management and surgical evacuation of the hematoma, the bleeding was stopped, and the patient recovered neurologically.
CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of considering rare bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia C, in the diagnosis of patients with recurrent SEH.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with limited therapeutic options. Microtubule-associated serine/threonine kinase-like (MASTL), a pivotal regulator of mitosis, remains poorly characterized in HCC. This study aimed to elucidate the clinical significance, biological functions, and molecular mechanisms of MASTL in HCC progression. Bioinformatics analysis of TCGA and ICGC datasets revealed MASTL overexpression correlated with advanced tumor stage and served as an independent prognostic factor. Functional studies demonstrated that MASTL knockdown significantly disrup

Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, also known as Ogilvie's syndrome, is a rare but critical cause of abdominal pain and distension, potentially mimicking mechanical obstruction or toxic megacolon. Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) have additional risk factors such as vaso-occlusive crises, chronic hemolysis, and susceptibility to infections, which further complicate diagnosis. We report the case of a 14-year-old male patient with SCD who presented with severe generalized abdominal pain, vomiting, and progressive distension with no fever. Imaging revealed significant colonic dilation and p
