Presumed gabapentin-induced myoclonus in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This case report describes the history and presentation of two cats with presumed gabapentin-induced myoclonus. Although this phenomenon is well documented in people, there are no previous reports in cats. Both cats in the current report had International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage 2 chronic kidney disease, a history of seizures (one generalized, one focal), and received gabapentin before veterinary hospital visits to alleviate anxiety (doses in the range of 11.8-16.4 mg/kg). While in the hospital, both cats were noted to have intermittent short jerks of the head …

Clinicopathological findings in cats with haws syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Haws syndrome is a relatively common yet poorly understood disorder in cats. METHODS: Ten cats with acute haws syndrome underwent ophthalmic and physical examinations, bloodwork, faecal analysis and pharmacological testing with 1% phenylephrine. The cats were discharged with broad-spectrum deworming (with or without metronidazole) as well as topical tetrahydrozoline. RESULTS: Cats were 17.6 ± 9.1 (2‒36) months old. All eyes had bilateral third eyelid protrusion and ptosis but no miosis or other ocular abnormalities. Diarrhoea was noted in four of 10 cats; otherwise, the cats were…

Histopathological changes in testicular lesions in cats.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions seen on histopathological examination of cat testes in Hong Kong between 2018 and 2024. METHODS: A total of 26 single or dual testes samples were collected from 18 cats by veterinarians at 14 veterinary clinics and submitted for histopathological examination. Laboratory records, including signalment, lesion location, age, breed and histopathological findings, were reviewed for each cat. RESULTS: Neoplastic testicular lesions were seen in three older cats (median age 8.5 years; range 3-17…

Grenadian cats as potential reservoir for Leptospira.

Leptospirosis is a spirochetal disease caused by Leptospira spp. bacteria with global distribution affecting multiple mammalian species, including humans. The disease is endemic in many geographic areas and is of particular concern in tropical regions with abundant rainfall, such as the Caribbean. Currently, there are no published reports on Leptospira exposure or infection in Grenadian cat populations, and the role of cats in the epidemiology of the disease is unknown. Our hypothesis is that Grenadian cat population may be a reservoir host for zoonotic Leptospira on the island. During 2019-20…

Ventricular pre-excitation in cats: 17 cases.

OBJECTIVES: Atrioventricular accessory pathways are abnormal electrical connections between the atria and ventricles that predispose to ventricular pre-excitation (VPE) and tachycardias. ANIMALS: Seventeen cats with VPE and 15 healthy matched-control cats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Multicenter case-control retrospective study. Clinical records were searched for cats with VPE, defined as preserved atrioventricular synchrony, reduced PQ interval, and increased QRS complex duration with a delta wave. Clinical, electrocardiography, echocardiographic, and outcome data were collated. RESULTS: Most ca…

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in dogs and cats.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a malabsorptive syndrome caused by insufficient secretion of digestive enzymes from pancreatic acini. The most common causes of EPI in dogs and cats are pancreatic acinar atrophy and chronic pancreatitis. EPI is diagnosed by measurement of species-specific immunoassays for serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity, the concentration of which directly reflects the mass of functioning pancreatic acinar tissue. EPI is treated by pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, nutritional management (low-residue diets with moderate fat content), and supplementation of c…

Sporothrix brasiliensis in cats from Santiago, Chile.

We report Sporothrix brasiliensis infection in three cats from Santiago, Chile. Recently, S. brasiliensis was reported in cats from the southernmost region of Chile located 2,190 km from Santiago. Our findings emphasize the emergence of S. brasiliensis in the Chilean context, reflecting its rapid expansion across South America in recent years. Veterinarians should include S. brasiliensis in the differential diagnosis of skin conditions in cats.

High-rise syndrome in cats and dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To review the current literature pertaining to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries sustained from high-rise syndrome in cats and dogs. ETIOLOGY: High-rise syndrome is defined as a fall from a height of 2 or more stories that results in a constellation of injuries, including thoracic, abdominal, orthopedic, and orofacial trauma. Animals often fall after slipping from windowsills, engaging in mating behavior, or chasing prey. Cats suffer less severe injuries than dogs due to their "righting reflex" and smaller body mass. Affected animals are younger, and the fre…

Simultaneous bidirectional hindlimb locomotion in decerebrate cats.

We show that epidural spinal cord stimulation can elicit stable bidirectional locomotion of decerebrate cats on a split-belt treadmill. The stepping pattern of one limb was similar to unidirectional forward walking and, the other-was similar to unidirectional backward walking. This confirms that spinal and brainstem circuitry are sufficient to control such complex and extraordinary motor tasks driven by somatosensory input. Interlimb coordination during forward and backward walking was preserved in 2 out of 4 animals during 'extreme' conditions when one of the treadmill belts was stopped. Bidi…

[Cats, a controlled species within the hospital].

Faced with the proliferation of stray cats in its park, the Barthélemy-Durand public health establishment in Étampes (91), in partnership with the Société protectrice des animaux, has managed to find the right balance between health safety and a pleasant animal presence for patients and caregivers. The regulated control of free and healthy cats on the hospital site also opens up possibilities for animal mediation. Sharing experience and commitment to the animal cause.

Can cats cause colossal contagious cutaneous carbuncles?

Sporothrix spp. cause the most common deep fungal skin infections in Brazil and this is related to infected cats. Transmission is traditionally from organic material/plants but can also be zoonotic. Culture of a skin biopsy is the golden standard for determination. Treatment with oral itraconazole approaches up to 95% efficacy in patients with cutaneous sporotrichosis.

Osteochondrodysplasia in Scottish Fold cross-breed cats.

Two Scottish Fold mixed cats are described in this report. Case 1 is a mixed Scottish Fold and Munchkin cat. Extremities of this cat resembled the Munchkin cat, while the ear pinna were folded forward like the Scottish Fold cat. Case 2 is a mixed Scottish Fold and American Curl cat. The ear pinna were curled caudally like the American Curl. Severe exostosis in the hind leg was observed in radiographs taken around one year of age in both cats. Both cats were dominant homozygous for c.1024G>T of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 gene, responsible for osteochondrodysplasia in the Scott…

Primary Hyperaldosteronism in Cats: An Underdiagnosed Disorder.

Primary hyperaldosteronism, also known as Conn's syndrome, is the most common adrenocortical disease in cats. As in humans, this disease is underdiagnosed in cats. Cats presenting with systemic arterial hypertension, hypokalemia, or both quite often are only treated symptomatically without further investigations. This practice may potentially exclude a significant number of cats from receiving appropriate treatment. It is therefore important for general practitioners to be aware of the disease. This article describes the (patho)physiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and treatm…

Serological Screening for Coronavirus Infections in Cats.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are widespread among mammals and birds and known for their potential for cross-species transmission. In cats, infections with feline coronaviruses (FCoVs) are common. Several non-feline coronaviruses have been reported to infect feline cells as well as cats after experimental infection, supported by their ability to engage the feline receptor ortholog for cell entry. However, whether cats might become naturally infected with CoVs of other species is unknown. We analyzed coronavirus infections in cats by serological monitoring. In total 137 cat serum samples and 25 FCoV typ…

Traumatic caudal elbow luxation in two cats.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic caudal elbow luxation is an uncommon injury and it is rarely reported in the cat. Closed reduction is considered in early instance but open reduction and stabilization should be evaluated if the joint cannot be reduced or if gross instability persist. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report described two Domestic Shorthaired cats referred for monolateral forelimb non-weight bearing lameness caused by trauma. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed a caudal elbow luxation in both patients. The cats were treated with closed reduction and the elbow joints stabilized at 4…

Neuropathology of Spontaneous Hypertensive Encephalopathy in Cats.

Pathologic features of 12 cats with naturally acquired systemic hypertension and concomitant hypertensive encephalopathy were analyzed. All cats demonstrated acute onset of signs localized to the forebrain and/or brainstem, including stupor, coma, and seizures. All cats had systemic hypertension, ranging from 160 to 300 mm Hg. Gross lesions were identified in 4 of 12 cases, including caudal herniation of the cerebrum and cerebellum, sometimes with compression of the rostral colliculus and medulla. Histologically, all cases featured bilaterally symmetrical edema of the cerebral white matter. As…

Drip infusion cholangiography with CT in cats.

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasonography can detect extrahepatic biliary obstructions. However, visualisation of part of the bile duct using ultrasonography can be technically difficult if there is overlying bowel gas. This study investigated the safety and value of drip infusion cholangiography with computed tomography (DIC-CT) in the visualisation of the bile duct in healthy cats and extrahepatic biliary obstruction in cats with cholelithiasis. METHODS: DIC-CT was performed in three healthy cats and two cats with cholelithiasis. Meglumine iotroxate was administered by intravenous drip infusion over 30 m…

Vector-borne diseases in cats in Germany.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are caused by a wide range of pathogens, which are transmitted by a variety of vectors, such as ticks and fleas. As a result of climate changes, more vector-borne diseases are becoming endemic in Germany, not only in dogs, but also in cats. For some of the pathogens prevalence data still need to be investigated in Germany. However, natural infections with Bartonella, Anaplasma, haemotropic Mycoplasma and Borrelia species have already been described in German cats. Clinical relevance of these pathogens is not fully understood, and it is still unknown, why most infec…
