A thematic analysis of how men and women post 56 years unwind from work during their free time.

BACKGROUND: Recent research indicates that as men age, their tendency to ruminate about work decreases, while ruminating remains high in women, which poses an increased risk for impaired health among older women. OBJECTIVE: This study explored gender differences/similarities in the process of unwinding from work in men and women aged between 56-65 years. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted online with eight men and eight women, recruited from a UK leading organization that provides health care solutions between May and June 2022. Participants were asked about their

Perspectives on Drug Product Design Among Patients with Lung Cancer in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral anticancer medications has become more prevalent in cancer therapy. This is particularly the case in the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, when the treatment delivery interaction between the patient and the healthcare provider is removed, the risk of non-adherence increases. Insights into patient preferences can allow drug product formulation scientists to design more patient-centric medications that may promote an increase in adherence which, in turn, may lead to more beneficial health outcomes. METHODS: We conducted an advisory

Transcriptomic profiling with vascular tension analyses reveals molecular targets and phenotypes in preeclamptic placental vasculature.

INTRODUCTION: The placental vascular system plays an important role in the development of pregnancy hypertension in preeclampsia. The gene profiles of whole placental tissue (containing blood vessels and many other structural components) and pure vascular tissue should be very different. All previous reports using RNA-seq analysis in the placenta have tested its whole tissue or the villous part, and thus the gene profiles in the pure placental blood vessels are unknown. METHODS: This study was the first to address this point with RNA-seq in human placenta at the transcript level. Isolated pla

Proposing a Methodology for Axon-Centric Analysis of IOP-Induced Mechanical Insult.

PURPOSE: IOP-induced mechanical insult on retinal ganglion cell axons within the optic nerve head (ONH) is believed to be a key factor in axonal damage and glaucoma. However, most studies focus on tissue-level mechanical deformations, overlooking that axons are long and thin, and that their susceptibility to damage likely depends on the insult's type (e.g. stretch/compression) and orientation (longitudinal/transverse). We propose an axon-centric approach to quantify IOP-induced mechanical insult from an axon perspective. METHODS: We used optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans from a healthy

Training AI to Recognize Objects of Interest to the Blind and Low Vision Community.

Recent object detection models show promising advances in their architecture and performance, expanding potential applications for the benefit of persons with blindness or low vision (pBLV). However, object detection models are usually trained on generic data rather than datasets that focus on the needs of pBLV. Hence, for applications that locate objects of interest to pBLV, object detection models need to be trained specifically for this purpose. Informed by prior interviews, questionnaires, and Microsoft's ORBIT research, we identified thirty-five objects pertinent to pBLV. We employed this

Clinical Utility of Sperm Function Tests in Predicting Male Fertility: A Systematic Review.

Routine semen analysis provides considerable information regarding sperm parameters; however, it is not solely adequate to predict male fertility potential. In the past two decades, several advance sperm function tests have been developed. The present systematic review intends to assess the clinical utility of available advance sperm function tests in predicting the male fertility potential. A systematic literature search was conducted as per PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library. Different keywords either singly or in combination were used to retrieve t

Ceramides in Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases: Existing Evidence and Therapeutic Considerations for Diet as an Anticeramide Treatment.

Autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) constitute a set of connective tissue disorders and dysfunctions with akin clinical manifestations and autoantibody responses. AIRD treatment is based on a comprehensive approach, with the primary aim being achieving and attaining disease remission, through the control of inflammation. AIRD therapies have a low target specificity, and this usually propels metabolic disturbances, dyslipidemias and increased cardiovascular risk. Ceramides are implicated in inflammation through several different pathways, many of which sometimes intersect. They serve as signa

LGBTQ+ Youth-Generated Intervention Concepts for Reducing Teen Dating Violence Inequities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, nonbinary, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) youth are at substantially greater risk than cisgender heterosexual youth for experiencing teen dating violence (TDV) victimization, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse within dating/romantic relationships. Despite these inequities, there are no evidence-based interventions designed specifically to address TDV among LGBTQ+ youth. To redress this dearth of interventions, we utilized a youth-centric approach, wherein 46 LGBTQ+ youth co-developed intervention concepts for reducing TDV.

Malocclusion and occlusal traits among dental and nursing students of Seven North-East states of India.

BACKGROUND: Any irregularity of the teeth or a mal-relationship of the dental arches is known as malocclusion. Among all the oro-facial problems, tooth decay is considered the most prevalent one followed by periodontal disease and dental malocclusion. Dental malocclusion is not a life-threatening condition. However, it is closely related to an individual's self-esteem and psychosocial wellbeing. The prevalence of malocclusion varies among different ethnic groups, age-groups, and gender. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted with the objective to find out the prevalence of normal occlusal trait

Dual Molecular Effects of Dominant RORA Mutations Cause Two Variants of Syndromic Intellectual Disability with Either Autism or Cerebellar Ataxia.

RORα, the RAR-related orphan nuclear receptor alpha, is essential for cerebellar development. The spontaneous mutant mouse staggerer, with an ataxic gait caused by neurodegeneration of cerebellar Purkinje cells, was discovered two decades ago to result from homozygous intragenic Rora deletions. However, RORA mutations were hitherto undocumented in humans. Through a multi-centric collaboration, we identified three copy-number variant deletions (two de novo and one dominantly inherited in three generations), one de novo disrupting duplication, and nine de novo point mutations (three truncating,

Developing a knowledge base to support the annotation of ultrasound images of ectopic pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic pregnancy is a frequent early complication of pregnancy associated with significant rates of morbidly and mortality. The positive diagnosis of this condition is established through transvaginal ultrasound scanning. The timing of diagnosis depends on the operator expertise in identifying the signs of ectopic pregnancy, which varies dramatically among medical staff with heterogeneous training. Developing decision support systems in this context is expected to improve the identification of these signs and subsequently improve the quality of care. In this article, we present a

Network-level analysis of cortical thickness of the epileptic brain.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) characterized by an epileptogenic focus in the medial temporal lobe is the most common form of focal epilepsy. However, the seizures are not confined to the temporal lobe but can spread to other, anatomically connected brain regions where they can cause similar structural abnormalities as observed in the focus. The aim of this study was to derive whole-brain networks from volumetric data and obtain network-centric measures, which can capture cortical thinning characteristic of TLE and can be used for classifying a given MRI into TLE or normal, and to obtain additio

Relationship between heterochromatic interstitial telomeric sequences and chromosome damage induced by the radiomimetic compound streptonigrin in Chinese hamster ovary cells.

The relationship between (heterochromatic) interstitial telomeric sequences (ITSs) and the chromosome damage induced by the radiomimetic compound streptonigrin (SN) was investigated in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells by using PNA- and Q-FISH techniques with a pantelomeric probe. CHO cells were exposed to increasing concentrations of SN and chromosomal aberrations were analyzed in the first mitosis after treatment. Cytogenetic analysis revealed that 16.9% and 11.7% of the total aberrations induced by SN in cells harvested 18 h and 3 h after treatment, respectively, exhibited one or more FISH-

ECM remodeling features in reparative chondrocytes during knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by progressive cartilage degeneration and disruption of extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. Chondrocytes are not a homogeneous or static population during disease progression but exhibit pronounced functional heterogeneity. Although single-cell transcriptomic studies have identified multiple chondrocyte states in osteoarthritic cartilage, how these states dynamically relate to ECM remodeling and disease progression remains incompletely understood. METHODS: We integrated multiple publicly available single-cell RNA sequencing datasets o
