Destructive cervical spondylitis due to Cutibacterium acnes with synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome: A case report.

Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a spectrum of heterogeneous diseases commonly recognised by skin … severe neck pain for 6 months. Radiography and computeed tomography showed sclerosed and collapsed cervical vertebrae, and the patient was referred to our hospital for further evaluation and management upon suspicion of infection or spondylitis with SAPHO syndrome. For the severe neck pain and progressive destruction of cervical vertebrae, we performed posterior fu …

Three-dimensional assessment of the intervertebral kinematics after Mobi-C total disc replacement at the cervical spine in vivo using the EOS stereoradiography system.

BACKGROUND: Because 3-dimensional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging analysis of the spinal architecture is done with the patient in the supine position, stereoradiography may be more clinically relevant for the measurement of the relative displacements of the cervical vertebrae in vivo in the upright position. The innovative EOS stereoradiography system was used for measuring the relative angular displacements of the cervical vertebrae in a limited population to determine its feasibility. The precision and accuracy of the method were investigated. METHODS: In 9 patients with …

Multiple episodes of golf-related isolated spinous process fractures (clay-shoveler's fracture) and its ten-year follow-up.

CASE: We present a case of a 28-year-old beginner golfer who sustained multiple episodes of isolated spinous process fractures of the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae (clay-shoveler's fracture) and its ten-year follow-up. The patient is complaining of intermittent mild dull pain and discomfort in the posterior aspect of the cervicothoracic junction even after 10 years from initial injury. Radiologic evaluation revealed non-union of avulsed fragments and the patient's symptoms are possibly associated with non-union. Nevertheless, he recovered to full activity with no limitations in a

Disorders of the cervical spine.

The cervical spine is composed of 7 vertebrae that support the head, surround and protect the spinal cord and spinal nerves in the neck, and provide attachment sites for muscles and ligaments. Although the cervical spine remains immature at birth and continues to develop during childhood, some severe congenital anomalies are discovered early in life, while other anomalies cause gradual degeneration and may not be detected until the second decade of life or later. Some of these anomalies can cause deformity, organ disease, paraplegia, or even death. This article discusses congenital development

Potential adaptations for bipedalism in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of Homo sapiens: A 3D comparative analysis.

A number of putative adaptations for bipedalism have been identified in the hominin spine. However, it is possible that some have been overlooked because only a few studies have used 3D and these studies have focused on cervical vertebrae. With this in mind, we used geometric morphometric techniques to compare the 3D shapes of three thoracic and two lumbar vertebrae of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla, and Pongo pygmaeus. The study had two goals. One was to confirm the existence of traits previously reported to distinguish the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of H. sapiens from thos…

[Single factor analysis of motor dysfunction and imaging and clinical features in metastatic epidural spinal cord compression].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of motor dysfunction of the lower extremities with the imaging appearances and clinical features of metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCCs). METHODS: From July 2006 to December 2007, 26 successive patients with metastases of the thoracic, lumbar and the cervical spine were treated in our department. Forty-three main involved vertebra in all 26 patients were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography, and were scored according motor dysfunction in this study. Fourteen patients (25 vertebrae) had motor dysfunction. RESULT

Analysis of perimortem trauma in hanged individuals from the Lisbon Identified Skeletal Collection.

Hanging consists of the external pressure of the neck by a ligature through suspension of the body. It may cause death by asphyxiation, vascular change, cerebral ischaemia, anoxia or bone trauma. Skeletal trauma by hanging occurs predominantly at the axis, but may likewise take place at the cranial base, other upper cervical vertebrae, and hyoid bone. Six individuals from the Lisbon Identified Skeletal Collection, whose cause of death was by hanging, were macroscopically analyzed for perimortem trauma at the cranium and cervical area. Only one female individual of 53 years exhibited perimortem…

Abscess of the cervical spine secondary to injection site infection in a heifer.

BACKGROUND: Abscesses in the neck region can result from infection associated with injection of drugs into the neck muscles. To our knowledge, there have been no reports of osteomyelitis of the cervical vertebra and spinal cord compression secondary to an abscess in the neck. This case report describes the findings in a 9.5-month-old heifer with an abscess of the cervical spine secondary to injection site infection. CASE PRESENTATION: The main clinical findings were swelling on the left side of the neck, proprioceptive deficits in all limbs and generalised ataxia. The ultrasonographic examina

Initial Experience with O-Arm Navigated Spinal Surgery - Report on Two Cases.

Image-guided spinal surgery is becoming increasingly popular because it allows surgeons to achieve minimal invasiveness and maximum precision in the performed procedures. We present our initial experience with two cases operated on using O-arm-based spinal navigation at the Clinic of Neurosurgery in St George University Hospital, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the first case, we performed removal of extradural spinal tumor of the sixth thoracic vertebra and O-arm-navigated pedicle screw fixation. In the second case, we performed O-arm-navigated corpectomy of the fifth cervical vertebra and anterior spi

Intervertebral disc degeneration induced by long-segment in-situ immobilization: a macro, micro, and nanoscale analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine fixation or immobilization has become a routine treatment for spinal fracture, dislocation, subluxation injuries, or spondylosis. The effects of immobilization of intervertebral discs of the cervical spine is unclear. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-segment in-situ immobilization of intervertebral discs of the caudal vertebra, thereby simulating human cervical spine immobilization. METHODS: Thirty-five fully grown, male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Rats were randomly assigned to one of five groups: Group A, which served as controls, and

An unusual cause of difficult intubation in a patient with a large cervical anterior osteophyte: a case report.

This report describes a case in which a large anterior osteophyte on the C2 and C3 vertebrae, due to ankylosing spondylitis, resulted in distortion of the anatomy of the upper airway and difficult intubation. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a progressive inflammatory disease, characterized by stiffening of the joints and ligaments. Stiffness of the cervical spine, atlanto-occipital, temporomandibular and cricoarytenoid joints may cause difficult intubation (1). This report describes a case in which a large anterior osteophyte on the C2 and C3 vertebrae, associated with AS, resulted in distortio

The Klippel-Feil syndrome: implications for Naval service.

The Klippel-Feil anomaly is usually discovered by serendipity on cervical spine X-rays. Although it may encompass many vertebrae, the typical case is an isolated fusion of two vertebrae. Nearly 1% of the general population has this anomaly and its incidence in the Navy is likely similar. Increased susceptibility to spinal cord injury has been reported in individuals with the Klippel-Feil syndrome. Unusual stress on the head and neck inherent to various aspects of naval service place such persons at risk for debilitating or fatal injury. An algorithm for evaluating suspected Klippel-Feil syndro

Imaging characterization and vascular topography of vertebral body infarctions in spinal cord stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spinal cord stroke (SCS) is rare, and is frequently misdiagnosed. This study describes the clinical and radiological characteristics of vertebral body infarction (VBI) associated with SCS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess VBI in patients with SCS, we retrospectively reviewed clinical data and magnetic resonance imaging from patients diagnosed at a specialized referral center. VBI was defined as T2-weighted hyperintensity within a vertebral body near ischemic cord lesions. Additional features, including gadolinium enhancement, lesion distribution, and exclusion of other

Cervical spine injury in patients with facial skeletal trauma.

The records of 2,555 patients admitted to hospital with facial fractures were reviewed for concomitant neck injury. Cervical spine injury occurred in 1.3% of all patients with facial fractures, the incidence rising to 5.5% with facial fractures resulting only from MVA's. Neck injuries occurred most frequently in the setting of MVA's (85%) and multisystem trauma (70%) and tended to involve two main levels of the cervical spine: C2 (31%) and the two lower cervical vertebrae C6 and C7 (50%). Examination of the pattern of cervical spine injury with respect to the pattern of facial skeletal injury …
