Technical recommendations for artificial insemination in sheep.

Artificial insemination (AI) was the first important biotechnology applied to improve the genetics of farm animals. It allows the rapid and massive diffusion of desirable characteristics of males with high productive potential. We describe the different types of estrus induction and synchronization techniques and the use of the AI with fresh, chilled or frozen semen. Through the adequacy of the protocols of estrus synchronization and AI to the different production systems, the efficient use of reproductive techniques is possible, reaching acceptable pregnancy rates. Summary of reproductive res

An epidemiological study of listeriosis complicating a bone marrow transplant.

Following an unrelated-donor bone marrow transplant a six-year-old child with severe aplastic anaemia developed Listeria monocytogenes septicaemia and meningitis. Cook-chill foods consumed during his stay in hospital were found to contain strains of L. monocytogenes and other Listeria species. Whole cell protein SDS-PAGE was performed on all isolates. No food isolates were found that were identical to the patient's strain by this technique or by serotyping. The usefulness of whole cell protein SDS electrophoresis for listeria strain differentiation is discussed.

Listeria meningitis and paté.

Listeria meningitis occurred in a 63 year old man who was in complete haematological remission following chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia. The patient had followed Department of Health advice to immunocompromised patients and had avoided soft cheeses, cook-chill meals, and salads. He had, however, recently eaten paté produced in Belgium. This was no longer available for examination but a coincidental survey of paté in the Cardiff area found Listeria monocytogenes in 16 out of 73 samples. Paté should be included in the list of foods to be avoided by immunocompromised patients.

Splenic abscess caused by Lancefieldella rimae successfully managed with percutaneous drainage and antibiotics: A case report.

A 29-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy presented with fever and chills 4 days postdischarge following hospitalization for hyperglycemia. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a splenic abscess. Percutaneous drainage was performed, and intravenous meropenem was administered. Subsequent culture of the drained abscess identified Lancefieldella rimae. Based on the antimicrobial susceptibility results, the patient was switched to oral levofloxacin. This combined treatment led to the resolution of the abscess, with no recurrence after 6 months. This is the first case of a splenic abscess cause…

Malakoplakia in a Transplanted Liver.

Malakoplakia is a rare acquired histiocytic disorder first described in the urinary bladder. There have been 8 cases reported involving the liver, and this is the first reported case of malakoplakia involving an adult transplanted liver. We report a 63-year-old man with a medical history of orthotopic liver transplantation who presented with fever, chills, and abdominal pain. Imaging found confluent microabscesses in the right lobe of the liver that persisted despite prolonged antibiotics. He was taken to the operating room for a segment 6 hepatectomy of the abscess. Histologically, the inflam…

Unraveling the Complexity: Ehrlichiosis-Induced Septic Shock and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis typically presents with nonspecific cold-like symptoms and a history of recent tick exposure, often responding well to early treatment. Here, we present the case of a 67-year-old immunocompetent male who initially presented with fevers, chills, dysuria, and hematuria, leading to admission to the intensive care unit with septic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which was later attributed to Ehrlichia chaffeensis infection. Prompt treatment with doxycycline resulted in a full clinical recovery. This case highlights the rare occurrence of severe eh…

Renal PEComa in a young male: A case report and insights from the literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, commonly found in the uterus and retroperitoneum. Renal PEComas are exceedingly rare, often posing diagnostic challenges due to their resemblance to renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on imaging. We present the case of an 18-year-old male who presented with non-specific symptoms of fever, chills, and shivering. Imaging revealed a renal mass, initially suspected to be RCC. However, following a right radical nephrectomy, histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of malignant PEComa. This case highlights the rarity…

Inverse pityriasis rosea secondary to COVID-19 vaccination.

A 56-year-old woman presented for evaluation of a pruritic rash with associated body aches, fever, and chills that first appeared about 1 week after Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccination. The rash initially presented as one lesion on her left breast that then spread to her face and groin. Based on clinical presentation, dermoscopic findings, and histopathological examination, a diagnosis of inverse pityriasis rosea was made. Although the exact pathogenesis of pityriasis rosea remains unknown, current evidence suggests that the inflammatory reaction to infectious agents, vaccines, certain dr…

HTLV-1 infection in acute t- lymphocytic leukemia/lymphoma.

Adult T- lymphocyte leukemia/ lymphoma (ATLL), described by Uchiyama et al. in 1977, is a distinct neoplasia of peripheral T-lymphocytes caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). The authors describe the case of a 75-year-old female patient who presented with fever, chills, and altered mental status. The peripheral blood morphology showed large atypical lymphocytes with multilobed nuclei and flow cytometry consistent with ATLL. The authors discuss the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and subtypes of ATLL in addition to the diagnostic approach using flow cytometry when …

Infective Endocarditis Involving Mitral and Aortic Valves With Interatrial Septal Abscess.

Infectious endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface and frequently refers to the infection of one or more heart valves. The clinical manifestations of IE are highly variable, with fever being the most common symptom, along with other nonspecific symptoms such as chills, anorexia, malaise, and myalgias. IE is associated with various systemic complications including septic emboli, cardiac complications such as valvular vegetations and intracardiac abscess, neurologic complications, and systemic immune reactions. In this case report, we present a patient with an IE that involv…

A Case of Systemic Toxicity Related to Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin for the Treatment of Bladder Cancer.

Intravesical administration of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been utilized for the treatment of superficial bladder cancer for the past several decades. Though this treatment is well tolerated in general, both local and systematic side effects have been reported. We present a case of a patient who presented with systemic symptoms of fever with chills associated with leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, abnormal liver function tests (LFTs), and splenomegaly a few weeks after an episode of traumatic instillation of intravesical BCG. Though the mycobacterial cultures were negative, he was started o…

A case report of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei Bailey, Thomas & Silva-Jr, 2005.

We present a case of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei. A 26-year-old man was bitten on the right hand and was not medicated. Bleeding lasted a few seconds, while paresthesia, chills, and headache persisted for up to 10 hours. The pain disappeared after a week, and the edema, itching, and prickling persisted for another 3 days. Although this patient's symptoms were typical of bites by South American opisthoglyphous snakes, they persisted longer than those of bites by some congeneric species. Our report adds a species to the list of medic…
