OBJECTIVE: To compare the serum HCG levels in pregnant women of routine IVF versus ICSI during fresh transplantation cycles so as to explore whether ICSI influenced the serum HCG levels.
METHODS: A total of 934 IVF pregnant cycles during March 2005 to September 2006 were divided into 7 groups: biochemical pregnancy (A), first-trimester miscarriages (B), ectopic pregnancy (C), single-pregnancy (D), twin-pregnancy (E), triplet-pregnancy (F) and heterotopic pregnancy (G). A 29-year-old nullipara with partial hydatidiform mole at 8 weeks had pre-evacuation hCG levels of 275,000 mIU/ml. Free beta-hCG levels were measured as 3% (normal value below 4%). The patient developed persistent gestational trophoblastic disease, failed to respond to methotrexate and actinomycin D, but has responded to combination chemotherapy with EMA-CO. INTRODUCTION: Interstitial ectopic pregnancy (IEP) is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy (EP). IEPs account for 1-3% of all EPs but with significant associated morbidity and mortality. The main presentation is usually abdominal pain with vaginal bleeding. Ultrasonography usually forms the cornerstone of diagnosis of IEP with distinct features described in literature. Management can be medical or surgical with the choice based on certain patient factors. We present a case of an IEP that was surgically managed in our unit and conduct a literature review of this condition.
