Chlorella vulgaris extract conjugated magnetic iron nanoparticles in nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): Growth promoting, immunostimulant and antioxidant role and combating against the synergistic infection with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and Aeromonashydrophila.

Nile tilapia reared under intensive conditions was more susceptible for Ichthyophthirius multifilii (I. multifiliis) infection eliciting higher mortality, lower productive rate and further bacterial coinfection with Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila). The higher potency of magnetic field of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) can kill pathogens through inhibiting their viability. Herein, coating of Chlorella vulgaris extract (ChVE) with magnetic iron oxide NPs (Mag iron NPs) can create an external magnetic field that facilitates their release inside the targeted tissues. Thus, the current study i

Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) protects Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) against bacterial infection.

Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) is a lipoprotein involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. However, the immunomodulatory functions of ApoA-I in fish are not well understood. In this study, ApoA-I from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (On-ApoA-I) was identified, and its function in bacterial infection was investigated. The open reading frame of On-ApoA-I is 792 bp, which codes for a protein containing 263 amino acids. On-ApoA-I shared over 60% sequence similarity with other teleost fish and more than 20% with mammalian ApoA-I. On-ApoA-I was found to be highly expressed

Atrazine promotes immunomodulation by melanomacrophage centre alterations in spleen and vascular disorders in gills from Oreochromis niloticus.

Atrazine is a herbicide that is banned in Europe but remains widely used on different types of crops in several countries in the American continent. Atrazine is known to be an endocrine disruptor and its effects on gonads have been extensively reported, but the toxic action on other organs is poorly documented. In this paper, we investigated the toxicity of atrazine on the gills and spleens of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The median lethal concentration (LC50), capable of killing one-half of the test animals was calculated, and sublethal concentrations of atrazine were used in a semis

Expression patterns of gonadotropin hormones and their receptors during early sexual differentiation in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

In Nile tilapia, sex-specific expression of foxl2 and cyp19a1a in XX gonads and dmrt1 in XY gonads at 5-6 days after hatching (dah) is critical for differentiation of the gonads into either ovaries or testes. The factors triggering sexually dimorphic expression of these genes are unknown, and whether the gonadotropin hormones are involved in early gonadal sex differentiation of the Nile tilapia has been unclear. In the present study, we determined the precise timing of expression of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in the pituitary and that of their receptors (fs

Gastric cryptosporidiosis in freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare).

A freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) hatchery experienced variable levels of emaciation, poor growth rates, swollen coelomic cavities, anorexia, listlessness, and increased mortality within their fish. Multiple chemotherapeutic trials had been attempted without success. In affected fish, large numbers of protozoa were identified both histologically and ultrastructurally associated with the gastric mucosa. The youngest cohort of parasitized fish was the most severely affected and demonstrated the greatest morbidity and mortality. The protozoa were morphologically most consistent with C

IL-4/13A1 promotes the proliferation of IgT+ B cells while enhancing their apoptosis in tilapia.

Interleukin-4/13 (IL-4/13) is a kind of bony fish cytokine, which is the homolog of Th2 cytokines IL-4 or IL-13 in mammals. Produced by activated T cells, these Th2 cytokines regulate B cell proliferation, survival, and antibody responses. Although IL-4/13 has been shown to participate in immune responses in bony fish, whether and how it regulates the teleost-specific IgT+ B cell subset, a lineage unique to bony fish remains unclear. In present study, we identified two conserved IL-4/13 from the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (OnIL-4/13A1 and OnIL-4/13A2), and suggested their wide expressi

Granzyme B secreted by T cells is involved in anti-bacterial immune response of tilapia.

Secreted by natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, Granzyme B is involved in regulating the adaptive immune response in vertebrates and plays a pivotal role in resisting virus invasion and removing pathogens. Although it had been extensively studied in mammals, the involvement of Granzyme B in adaptive immune response of early vertebrates remained elusive. In this study, we investigated the Granzyme B in Oreochromis niloticus (OnGrB), found that its function domain was conserved. Additionally, OnGrB was widely expressed in various tissues and could respond to T-cell activation in vi

Hypoxia tolerance and metabolic coping strategies in Oreochromis niloticus.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is widely farmed in tropical and subtropical pond culture. O. niloticus is recognized as a species that is tolerant of hypoxic conditions, a trait that may largely be responsible for the success of this species in aquaculture. Until now, neither coping mechanisms nor a comparison of various indices of hypoxia tolerance to characterize the response to hypoxia, have been described. In the present study, Nile tilapia were subjected to hypoxia of increasing severity and duration to examine effects on metabolic rate (MO2) and post hypoxic oxygen debt. MO2 wa
