The Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS): Digital Health Global Goods Maturity Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Digital health is a dynamic field that has been generating a large number of tools; many of these tools do not have the level of maturity required to function in a sustainable model. It is in this context that the concept of global goods maturity is gaining importance. Digital Square developed a global good maturity model (GGMM) for digital health tools, which engages the digital health community to identify areas of investment for global goods. The Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) is an open-source mobile and web application software that we d

Anatomy of Mine Rescue Teams' Casualty Incidents: A Basis for Medical Emergency Preparedness and Injury Prevention.

OBJECTIVE: Mine rescue teams bear a high risk of injury. To improve medical emergency preparedness and injury prevention, this work analyzed the causes and severity of mine rescue teams' casualty incidents, the primary injuries, and the link between the causes and the occurrences of the casualty incidents. METHODS: A total of 81 cases from 1953 to 2013 were used to analyze the casualty incidents of mine rescue teams based on the frequency of accidents. A panel with 4 rescue experts was set up to ensure the accuracy of the analysis. RESULTS: The 81 casualty incidents occurred in 7 types of re

Agility in adversity: Vaccines on Demand.

Is the US ready for a biological attack using Ebola virus or Anthrax? Will vaccine developers be able to produce a Zika virus vaccine, before the epidemic spreads around the world? A recent report by The Blue Ribbon Study Panel on Biodefense argues that the US is not ready for these challenges, however, technologies and capabilities that could address these deficiencies are within reach. Vaccine technologies have advanced and readiness has improved in recent years, due to advances in sequencing technology and computational power making the 'vaccines on demand' concept a reality. Building a rob

Advances in the development of influenza virus vaccines.

Influenza virus infections are a major public health concern and cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Current influenza virus vaccines are an effective countermeasure against infection but need to be reformulated almost every year owing to antigenic drift. Furthermore, these vaccines do not protect against novel pandemic strains, and the timely production of pandemic vaccines remains problematic because of the limitations of current technology. Several improvements have been made recently to enhance immune protection induced by seasonal and pandemic vaccines, and to speed up pr

Preparedness for terrorism: managing nuclear, biological and chemical threats.

The management of nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) terrorism events is critical to reducing morbidity and mortality in the next decade; however, initial patient care considerations and protective actions for staff are unfamiliar to most front-line clinicians. High explosive events (bomb and blast) remain the most common type of terrorism and are easy to detect. Conversely, some types of terrorist attacks are more likely to be unsuspected or covert. This paper explains the current threat of terrorism and describes clues for detection that an event has occurred. Specific criteria that shou

Legalized gambling and crime in Canada.

In the 10 provinces and 2 territories of Canada in 2000, but not in 1990, the total number of types of gambling activities was positively associated with rates of robbery (p<.05). Controls for other social variables did not eliminate these associations. With so many correlations in the present study the likelihood of a Type I error was quite large. Alpha was adjusted to control that likelihood. Statistical analysis now required even stronger evidence before concluding that there were significant relationships between crime and gambling variables or among gambling variables. In the 10 provinces

Constitutive Damage Model of Foamed Lightweight Concrete Using Statistical Damage Theory.

Foamed lightweight concrete has been applied in different fields of civil engineering because of its superior properties, but the related research considering internal pore damage is limited. Based on statistical damage theory and considering the uneven distribution of fracture damage and strength between the pores of light concrete, a damage constitutive model of foamed lightweight concrete was established based on the Weibull function. The parameters of the damage model were determined through a triaxial compression test, and the rationality was verified by combining the existing test data.

Analysis of noise on construction sites of high-rise buildings.

In the civil construction industry sector, it has been observed that the increasing use of machines has made tasks noisier and consequently caused hearing loss and had other adverse effects on workers. The objective of this study was to identify and assess the physical risks of noise present in activities undertaken in a construction company in order to propose control measures which will contribute to the management of health and safety within the company's organization. The methodology applied was based on verifying the characteristics of exposure to noise on construction sites, from an obse

Correlates of negative attitudes toward gay men: sexism, male role norms, and male sexuality.

Research has shown that heterosexual men are more negative toward gay men than women are on measures of attitudes toward homosexual behaviour and homosexual persons (Kite & Whitley, 1996). Gender differences in attitudes toward gay men's civil rights are less clear. No empirical studies, however, have investigated these findings with a scale that measures specifically these three attitudinal subcomponents. This study was a preliminary test of a scale that measured these subcomponents. In addition, this study investigated the relationship between these subcomponents and other attitudinal measur

[The life and times of Charles Richet].

In 1913 Charles Richet received the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology for his work on anaphylaxis, which he discovered with Paul Portier in 1902. The 335 letters received by Charles Richet shortly thereafter shed some light on his position in the European world at the time. In the field of biomedical sciences, he distinguished himself with his constant determination to blend physiology, and clinical studies, which irritated the fundamentalists and clinicians at the time; The circumspection of the latter in regard to anaphylaxis is evident in their letters. For wasn't anaphylaxis an experi

The history of tinnitus: from ancient interpretations to contemporary neuroscience and neuromodulation.

OBJECTIVE: To review the historical evolution of tinnitus from ancient civilizations to contemporary neuromodulation-based therapies. METHODS: A narrative historical review was undertaken using PubMed, Google Scholar, historical archives, classical medical texts, and landmark otological publications. Sources were selected according to historical significance, relevance to tinnitus, and contribution to major shifts in its conceptualisation and management. RESULTS: As a non-systematic narrative review, this study traces the conceptual paradigm shifts in tinnitus understanding. Early civilizati…

Legal personhood and legal capacity: the case of the locked-in syndrome.

The situation of persons diagnosed with locked-in syndrome (LIS) raises a significant legal challenge. As a consequence of a brainstem stroke, they are quadriplegic and lack articulate speech but have normal visual perception, bodily sensations, consciousness, and cognitive functions. It is only with human and technological assistance that they can communicate, express their will, make responsible decisions, and exert their civil rights. Insofar as they can communicate, there seems in principle to be no reason for restricting their legal capacity. This, however, has not always been recognized.

Possible therapeutic trepanation on a frontal sinus of a skull from the Old Kingdom period of Egypt.

Trepanation has been reported on skulls from major ancient civilizations since the Neolithic period. In this study, on a skull excavated from the Qau village site during the Old Kingdom period of ancient Egypt (7th to 8th dynasties; 2181-2160 BCE), we found a highly probable sign of therapeutic trepanation in the frontal bone. The practice of trepanation was suggested by the healing sign observed at the site on the frontal bone of case QAU-26. Based on our radiological findings, we presume that this ancient Egyptian male likely suffered from frontal sinus pathology, which may have led to the a…

Avoidant personality disorder and social functioning: A longitudinal, observational study investigating predictors of change in a clinical sample.

Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is an understudied, severe disorder. This study includes a clinical sample of AvPD patients (N = 460) treated within specialist mental health services. Social functioning was repeatedly assessed by self-report: Work and Social Adjustment Scale. Personality functioning (self-report), pretreatment occupational activity, civil status/family situation (self-report), and comorbidity; personality and symptom disorders were assessed at baseline. More extensive baseline impairment of social functioning was significantly associated with poorer personality functionin

Factors influencing rapid progress in child health in post-conflict Liberia: a mixed methods country case study on progress in child survival, 2000-2013.

OBJECTIVES: Only 12 countries in the WHO's African region met Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) to reduce under-five mortality by two-thirds by 2015. Given the variability across the African region, a four-country mixed methods study was undertaken to examine barriers and facilitators of child survival prior to 2015. Liberia was selected for an in-depth case study due to its success in reducing under-five mortality by 73% and thus successfully meeting MDG 4. Liberia's success was particularly notable given the civil war that ended in 2003. We examined some factors contributing to their red
