Ultraviolet-induced melanisation in lichens: physiological traits and transcriptome profile.

Lichens are important components of high-latitude boreal and Arctic habitats. While stress tolerant, they are among the most sensitive ecosystem components to climate change, in particular, an increase in ultraviolet light (UV) arising from polar ozone depletion and deforestation. This study is the first to explore the effects of UV-B on gene expression in lichens to predict metabolic pathways involved in tolerance. Using transcriptome profiling and bioinformatic analyses, here we studied the effects of UV-B on gene expression in lichens using Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoff. as a model species.

The second law of thermodynamics, life and Earth's planetary machinery revisited.

Life is a planetary feature that depends on its environment, but it has also strongly shaped the physical conditions on Earth, having created conditions highly suitable for a productive biosphere. Clearly, the second law of thermodynamics must apply to these dynamics as well, but how? What insights can we gain by placing life and its effects on planetary functioning in the context of the second law? In Kleidon (2010), I described a thermodynamic Earth system perspective by placing the functioning of the Earth system in terms of the second law. The Earth system is represented by a planetary hie

Lizards from warm and declining populations are born with extremely short telomeres.

Aging is the price to pay for acquiring and processing energy through cellular activity and life history productivity. Climate warming can exacerbate the inherent pace of aging, as illustrated by a faster erosion of protective telomere DNA sequences. This biomarker integrates individual pace of life and parental effects through the germline, but whether intra- and intergenerational telomere dynamics underlies population trends remains an open question. Here, we investigated the covariation between life history, telomere length (TL), and extinction risk among three age classes in a cold-adapted

Dwelling in the deep - strongly increased root growth and rooting depth enhance plant interactions with thawing permafrost soil.

Climate-warming-induced permafrost thaw exposes large amounts of carbon and nitrogen in soil at considerable depths, below the seasonally thawing active layer. The extent to which plant roots can reach and interact with these hitherto detached, deep carbon and nitrogen stores remains unknown. We aimed to quantify how permafrost thaw affects root dynamics across soil depths and plant functional types compared with above-ground abundance, and potential consequences for plant-soil interactions. A decade of experimental permafrost thaw strongly increased total root length and growth in the active

Distribution of total mercury and methylmercury in lake sediments in Arctic Ny-Ålesund.

The toxicities and bioavailabilities of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic systems have made them the subjects of recent research. In this study, we collected a lake sediment core from Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard and analyzed the distributions of THg and MeHg in the sediments. The increased trend of THg was caused by anthropogenic contamination since the 14th century through long-range transportation, especially after the industrial era. However, the peak values of Hg in surface sediment samples could be explained by the increased algal scavenging process in recent decades. All

Fired Bricks: CO2 Emission and Food Insecurity.

Fired bricks are used for construction purposes over the millennia, going back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The traditional brick-making process involves removal of agriculturally productive topsoil rich in clay and soil organic matter contents. In addition to the removal of the fertile topsoil and accelerated degradation by other processes, the traditional clay brick making process also emits CO2 and other gases into the atmosphere. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the impact of brick making in India on: (i) the magnitude of annual CO2 emission and (ii) the loss of agricultura

Incorporating Indium Oxide into Microplasma Reactor for CO2 Conversion to Methanol.

The clean conversion of CO2 is a strategic issue for addressing global climate change and advancing energy transformation. While the current clean CO2 conversion is limited to the H2 pyrolysis process, using H2O as a proton source is more promising and sustainable. A microplasma discharge method is developed, driven by electricity, and utilized for CO2 conversion with H2O. The microplasma integrates the advantages of high energy density in discharge plasma and microchannel reaction spaces, achieving a rapid resource conversion process of CO2 and water and a high selectivity for methanol produc

Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination in Crocodilians and Climate Challenges.

The sex of crocodilians is determined by the temperature to which the eggs, and hence the developing embryo are exposed during critical periods of development. Temperature-dependent sex determination is a process that occurs in all crocodilians and numerous other reptile taxa. The study of artificial incubation temperatures in different species of crocodiles and alligators has determined the specific temperature ranges that result in altered sex ratios. It has also revealed the precise temperature thresholds at which an equal number of males and females are generated, as well as the specific d

Relationship between the GABA Pathway and Signaling of Other Regulatory Molecules.

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is an amino acid whose numerous regulatory functions have been identified in animal organisms. More and more research indicate that in plants, this molecule is also involved in controlling basic growth and development processes. As recent studies have shown, GABA plays an essential role in triggering plant resistance to unfavorable environmental factors, which is particularly important in the era of changing climate. The main sources of GABA in plant cells are glutamic acid, converted in the GABA shunt pathway, and polyamines subjected to oxidative degradation. T

Wildfire Evacuation Lessons From La Ronge, a Northern Saskatchewan Site: Physician Debriefings.

The 2025 La Ronge wildfire evacuation highlights vulnerabilities in rural health system readiness during climate-driven emergencies. Reflections from 12 family physicians revealed challenges in communication redundancy, clarity of emergency governance, continuity of care for evacuated patients and the emotional strain of dual responder-evacuee roles. These insights, gathered through a post-evacuation debrief, represent physicians' perspectives rather than assessments of organizational performance. The findings echo lessons from previous Canadian wildfires and inform policy directions to streng

[Diseases and causes of death in native wild birds--a literature review].

Little attention was dedicated to diseases and causes of death of indigenous wild birds compared to poultry until recent decades. The interest of veterinary medicine in the spectrum of causes of morbidity and mortality of wild birds increased with the understanding of the importance of these birds as vectors in the epidemiology of zoonoses and as a biological indicator for the occurrence of substances noxious for the environment. The climate as a natural factor and the influences of civilization as traffic, high voltage lines and oil contamination of the sea lead to a reduction of bird species

What drives adoption of a computerised, multifaceted quality improvement intervention for cardiovascular disease management in primary healthcare settings? A mixed methods analysis using normalisation process theory.

BACKGROUND: A computerised, multifaceted quality improvement (QI) intervention for cardiovascular disease (CVD) management in Australian primary healthcare was evaluated in a cluster randomised controlled trial. The intervention was associated with improved CVD risk factor screening but there was no improvement in prescribing rates of guideline-recommended medicines. The aim of this study was to conduct a process evaluation to identify and explain the underlying mechanisms by which the intervention did and did not have an impact. METHODS/DESIGN: Normalisation process theory (NPT) was used to

Modeling the interaction of vegetation and sea level rise on barrier island evolution.

Barrier islands provide a first line of defense against ocean flooding and storm surge. Biogeomorphic interactions are recognized as important in coastal system processes, but current barrier island models are primarily dominated by physical processes. Recent research has demonstrated different biogeomorphic states that influence response to sea level rise and other disturbance. Building on this understanding, we present a cellular model utilizing biotic and abiotic processes and their interactions for barrier island evolution. Using the literature and field derived parameters, we model barrie

Machine learning-optimized composting strategies can enhance nutrient recycling and transform food system waste into a net carbon sink.

Composting organic waste offers a circular solution to recycle nutrients and restore soil health, but nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) losses during the process undermine its agricultural and climate benefits. Here, using a machine learning approach, we analyse 848 global manure, food waste and sewage sludge composting experiments, identifying 19 key management parameters that drive ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We estimate annual global losses during the composting process at 747 kt NH3-N, 81 kt N2O-N and 592 kt CH4-C, equivalent to ~61 MtCO2
