Distal humeral epiphyseal separations are rare and treatment strategies are not well defined. The case of a full-term male newborn with a distal humeral epiphyseal separation as the result of a birth trauma was reviewed. A literature review of this topic was undertaken to better understand its occurrence, diagnosis, and treatment options. The patient sustained a distal humeral epiphyseal separation during a vaginal delivery. Deformity and decreased movement in the elbow were observed. Radiographs and subsequent ultrasound were used to make the diagnosis of distal humeral epiphyseal separation.

INTRODUCTION: The way strength recovers after reduction of pediatric fractures of the upper extremity has not previously been the specific scope of research. This is remarkable, since strength measurements are often used as an outcome measure in studies on trauma of the upper extremity. The aim of this study was to evaluate how strength recovers after sustainment of fractures of the forearm, wrist or hand treated by closed or open reduction in children and adolescents in the first 6 months after trauma. How much strength is lost at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after trauma, and is this loss

INTRODUCTION: Femoral shaft fractures are a common entity in trauma surgery. The gold standard is closed reduction and intramedullary nailing. However, in some fracture patterns, the surgeon may choose to open the fracture for reduction. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the outcome of femoral shaft fractures treated with open reduction, cerclage wiring and intramedullary nailing.
METHODS: We included adult patients with femoral shaft fractures treated with open reduction, cerclage wiring and intramedullary nailing at a level 1 trauma center in Switzerland during an 11-ye

PURPOSE: Our study assessed the radiographic outcomes of nonsurgically treated distal radius fractures of patients who were 18 to 44 years old (group 1), 45 to 64 years old (group 2), and 65 years old or older (group 3).
METHODS: All distal radius fractures seen in our emergency department from April 2002 to September 2004 that had nonsurgical management (either casting alone or closed reduction with immobilization) were considered for this study (n = 124; 50 casted, 74 closed reduced). Patients were further classified by age. Change in fracture alignment was assessed at the time of fracture

OBJECTIVES: Bennett's fracture, the most common intra-articular fracture occurring at the base of the thumb, accounts for less than 1% of all hand fractures. It typically results from specific traumatic mechanisms, deforming forces, and ligamentous injuries. To compare the functional outcomes and sequelae in patients with Bennett's fracture treated surgically using: Open reduction and internal screw fixation, closed reduction and percutaneous fixation, arthroscopy-assisted reduction and screw fixation.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify studies on Bennett's frac

BACKGROUND: The differences in the clinical and functional outcomes of closed reduction and percutaneous pin fixation and open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) using plate and screws have been systematically synthesized by one meta-analysis. With newer studies being published, an effort to update the earlier meta-analysis is necessary.
METHODS: Comprehensive searches were done systematically through PubMed, Scopus, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and Google scholar databases. Randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, prospective comparative non

Background: Closed reduction is the preferred treatment for distal radius fractures. However, it requires a multiple experienced medical staff and manually maintaining stable traction is difficult. Additionally, doctors cannot assess the reduction status of a fracture in real-time through radiographic images, which may lead to improper reduction. Furthermore, post-fracture complications such as joint adhesion, stiffness, and impaired mobility pose a challenge for the doctors. So it is necessary to optimize the treatment process of the distal radius fracture through technological means. Methods

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The optimal treatment modality for pediatric diaphyseal forearm fractures is debated. While nonoperative treatment and closed reduction reduces the need for surgery and surgical complications, flexible intramedullary nailing (FIN) may reduce refracture and malunion rates. We aimed to compare the relative risk (RR) of refracture and malunion between nonoperative, closed reduction (CR), and surgical treatment in children treated for diaphyseal forearm fractures.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of children treated for a primary diaphyseal forearm fractu

BACKGROUND: Acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation is associated with high-energy trauma and is being increasingly recognized in children1. These injuries are associated with compression of mediastinal structures and can be life-threatening1. The management of acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation includes closed reduction or open surgical stabilization; however, limited success is reported with closed reduction2,3. To our knowledge, there are no detailed descriptions of open reduction and suture fixation of acute sternoclavicular fracture-dislocation in children.

This retrospective study evaluates the functional and radiological results of a series of acute trans-scaphoid dorsal perilunate fracture-dislocations treated operatively by minimally invasive technique. Twenty-one patients had surgery performed by one of three surgeons between 1994 and 2006, and all cases involved: (1) closed reduction of the carpus; (2) closed reduction and percutaneous screw fixation of the scaphoid fracture; and (3) closed reduction and multiple Kirschner wire stabilisation of the carpal dissociation. Seventeen males and four females with an average age of 29 years were ev

CASE: A 16-year-old adolescent boy with autism and vitamin D deficiency sustained a seizure and had bilateral femoral neck fractures and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFEs). He underwent closed reduction and screw stabilization of femoral neck fractures with incorporation of in situ screw fixation of SCFEs. Intraosseous epiphyseal perfusion monitoring was used to confirm the perfusion of the femoral head. Two years postoperatively, he had healed fractures and no evidence for avascular necrosis.
CONCLUSION: A femoral neck fracture in the setting of a SCFE can be treated with closed reduc

The acetabular depression fracture is defined as a rotated, impacted, osteocartilaginous fragment of the posteromedial acetabulum that occurs in conjunction with a posterior fracture dislocation of the hip. Displacement of this fracture fragment creates incongruity of the posterior acetabular articular surface and the potential for hip joint instability. A retrospective review of hip dislocations over a 3-year period disclosed 75 posterior fracture dislocations of the hip. A total of 71 hips had computerized tomography (CT) scanning after successful closed reduction of the dislocation. Of the

BACKGROUND: Single-stage total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with long-stem is a viable option to treat proximal tibial stress fracture in advance knee osteoarthritis. However, in patients with old mal-united or non-united tibial fractures, treatment becomes complicated. Therefore, our aim in this study was to monitor clinical and radiological outcome in patients presenting early or late managed by single-stage long-stem TKA.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 24 consecutive patients; all were female. Patients with recent and mobile stress fracture (Group A) were treated with close reductio

BACKGROUND: We performed open osteoclasis, soft-tissue release, and fracture fragment reduction and fixation to treat 10 cases of neglected physeal fractures of the distal aspect of the femur with severe deformity. To our knowledge, no specific surgical procedure for this problem has been reported in the literature.
DESCRIPTION: The procedure is typically performed through an extensile anterolateral approach. With use of an osteotome, the typically abundant fracture callus is disrupted and partially removed to recreate the original fracture line. Through periosteal dissection, an extensive mu

The aim of this study was to evaluate prospective patients with periarticular fractures where a meta physeal bone defect was grafted with high compressive calcium sulfate cement. The calcium sulfate cement MIIG X3, (Wright Medical Technology, Inc, Arlington, TN) was used in 45 patients with periarticular fractures--distal radial, tibial plateau, humeral head, and calcaneal fractures--to fill the metaphyseal defect. All fractures were treated either with open or closed reduction, fracture fixation, and the cement was applied openly or closed. Radiographs were evaluated for fracture reduction, j

The two important fractures of the trapeziometacarpal joint are Bennett's fracture and Rolando's fracture. Bennett's fracture is a fracture-dislocation of the joint. The preferred treatment is closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of the fracture with additional fixation through the trapeziometacarpal joint verified by anteroposterior (AP) and lateral roentgenograms. If the fracture is not reducible, and open reduction through the thenar approach with Herbert screw fixation is recommended. Rolando's fracture is a comminuted T- or Y-shaped fracture through the base of the first metacarpal.

Nasal fractures are the most common of all facial skeletal injuries. Untreated, these fractures frequently lead to functional and aesthetic problems. Careful history and physical assessment are critical to determine the extent of injury and to determine proper management. Critical aspects of assessment are discussed, as is the role of imaging in management. The unique aspects of pediatric nasal fractures and their management are reviewed. Fractures are classified based on the degree of injury and the involvement of the septum. A simple treatment algorithm is provided to help guide the selectio
