When it's at: An examination of when cognitive change occurs during cognitive therapy for compulsive checking in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The cognitive theory of compulsive checking in OCD proposes that checking behaviour is maintained by maladaptive beliefs, including those related to inflated responsibility and those related to reduced memory confidence. This study examined whether and when specific interventions (as part of a new cognitive therapy for compulsive checking) addressing these cognitive targets changed feelings of responsibility and memory confidence. METHODS: Participants were nine adults with a primary or secondary diagnosis of OCD who reported significant checking symptoms (at least

Screening for Cognitive Impairment in Movement Disorders: Comparison of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment Screen in Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is recommended by the Movement Disorder Society for cognitive testing in movement disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD) and lewy body dementia. Few studies have compared cognitive screening instruments in these diseases, which overlap clinically. OBJECTIVE: To compare the MoCA and Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment (Qmci) screen in this population. METHODS: Patients attending memory and movement disorder clinics associated with a university hospital had the MoCA and Qmci screen performed and diagnostic accuracy compared with the area u

Examining associations, moderators and mediators between childhood maltreatment, social functioning, and social cognition in psychotic disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been related to social functioning and social cognition impairment in people with psychotic disorders (PD); however, evidence across different CM subtypes and social domains remains less clear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between CM, overall and its different subtypes (physical/emotional/sexual abuse, physical/emotional neglect), and domains of social functioning and social cognition in adults with PD. We also examined moderators and mediators of these associations. A PRISMA-compliant systematic search was performe

The role of the urokinase receptor in epilepsy, in disorders of language, cognition, communication and behavior, and in the central nervous system.

As a key component of the plasminogen activation system, uPAR, the receptor for the plasminogen activator of the urokinase type, is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Besides its classical roles, there has been increased evidence that uPAR or uPAR-associated pathways, participate in the development, in the functioning and in the pathology of the central nervous system. Qualitative and quantitative changes in the expressions of uPAR and of its canonical ligand uPA have been observed in a large variety of epileptic disorders, either in human or in animal models, as well a

Seasonal longitudinal effects of winter birth on psychopathology, cognition, and functioning in schizophrenia-spectrum and affective disorders: Findings from the PsyCourse Study.

AIMS: Winter birth (WB) is a replicated risk factor for mental health conditions, potentially due to third-trimester Vitamin D deficiency and maternal viral infections. Beyond diagnosis, WB is associated with psychopathology, cognition, and functionality as epiphenomena. We analysed these outcomes in psychosis and affective disorders, considering illness duration and sex-specific effects. METHODS: We included 535 individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum and 667 with affective disorders from the PsyCourse Study, evaluated at four time points over 18 months. Participants were stratified by the b

Behavioral Disorders of Spatial Cognition in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment due to Alzheimer's Disease: Preliminary Findings from the BDSC-MCI Project.

(1) Background: Spatial cognition (SC) is one of the earliest cognitive domains to be impaired in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), resulting in spatial disorientation and becoming lost even in familiar surroundings as later dementia symptoms. To date, few studies have identified initial alterations of spatial navigation (SN) in the premorbid AD phase by real-world paradigms, and none have adopted an innovative technological apparatus to better detect gait alterations as well as physiological aspects correlated to spatial disorientation (SD). The present study aimed at exploring initial

Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder as a developmental disorder of cognitive-emotional control: a transdiagnostic and family-integrated perspective.

Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex condition that typically emerges in childhood or adolescence and is closely linked to developmental changes in cognitive and emotional control. This mini-review offers a clinically oriented synthesis of pediatric OCD from a developmental and transdiagnostic perspective, framing it as a disturbance of flexibility, inhibition, and distress regulation that organizes its clinical presentation. Variations in these control processes across development shape the content and form of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and contribute to their frequen

Eating disorder cognitions: a comparison between Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate whether individuals with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) experience unhelpful cognitions that overlap with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). It also examines whether these cognitions play a role in driving problematic eating behaviours that are typically associated with AN because they are designed to prevent weight gain. METHODS: There were 184 participants (68 individuals with AN, 61 individuals with ARFID, and 55 people with no eating disorder) who were screened using Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) criteria. Participants were an adul

The development of cognitive control in children with autism spectrum disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder: A longitudinal fMRI study.

Repetitive behavior is a core symptom of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and has been associated with impairments in cognitive control. However, it is unclear how cognitive control and associated neural circuitry relate to the development of repetitive behavior in children with these disorders. In a multicenter, longitudinal study (TACTICS; Translational Adolescent and Childhood Therapeutic Interventions in Compulsive Syndromes), the development of cognitive control was assessed during late childhood using a longitudinal fMRI design with a modified stop-

Irrational Beliefs and Their Role in Specific and Non-Specific Eating Disorder Symptomatology and Cognitive Reappraisal in Eating Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Research on which specific maladaptive cognitions characterize eating disorders (ED) is lacking. This study explores irrational beliefs (IBs) in ED patients and controls and the association between IBs and ED-specific and non-specific ED symptomatology and cognitive reappraisal. METHODS: 79 ED outpatients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or other specified feeding or eating disorders and 95 controls completed the Attitudes and Beliefs Scale-2 (ABS-2) for IBs. ED outpatients also completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) for ED-specific (EDI-3-ED Risk) and non-specif

The effect of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder comorbidity on cognitive functions and severity of addiction in opioid use disorder.

The aim of this study is to determine the changes in social cognition and other cognitive domains in ADHD comorbidity and to investigate the possible moderation role of these changes in OUD. A hundered inpatients with OUD were included in the study. Cognitive functions, severity of addiction and symptomatology of ADHD were evaluated. ASRS and API scores were in positive correlation and ASRS scores had a moderating effect on the relationship between craving score and emotion recognition. Our study shows that changes in social environment/cognition play an important role in the follow-up/treatme

No evidence of differences in cognitive control in children with autism spectrum disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder: An fMRI study.

Repetitive behaviors are among the core symptoms of both Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and are thought to be associated with impairments in cognitive control. However, it is still unknown how deficits in cognitive control and associated neural circuitry relate to the quality or severity of repetitive behavior in children with these disorders. Therefore, we investigated the behavioral and neural correlates of cognitive control using a modified stop-signal task in a multicenter study of children (aged 8-12 years) with ASD, OCD and typically developing (TD

Brief report: cognitive control helps explain comorbidity between alcohol use disorder and internalizing disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use and internalizing problems frequently co-occur. Cognitive control has been implicated in their etiology, but no studies have tested whether this construct helps explain the co-occurrence of these disorders. METHOD: A total of 1,313 undergraduate students completed assessments of cognitive control, negative emotionality, and symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD), depression, and generalized anxiety disorder. Structural equation models examined the extent to which overlap between AUD and internalizing problems was explained by variance specific to cognitive control and n

Cognitive and Orofacial Intersections: prevalence of temporomandibular disorders and bruxism in individuals with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Despite emerging evidence pointing to a comorbidity between temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism, and neuropsychiatric conditions such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), limited studies have explored this relationship in adult populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of painful TMD and self-reported bruxism in adults with highly consistent ADHD symptoms. METHODOLOGY: In total, 90 adult participants were divided into two groups based on the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale Screener, G1: individuals with highly consistent ADHD symptomatology (n=6

Social cognition impairment associated to a borderline personality disorder subtype linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition (SC) impairment in patients with BPD could be increased by comorbidity with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Comorbidity in neurodevelopmental disorders and its influence on SC impairments could result in greater severity, worse response to treatment and worse evolution of the disorder. The aim of this work is to study SC deficits, through Theory of Mind (ToM) errors associated with BPD linked to ADHD. METHODS: 87 BPD patients with and without ADHD associated were assessed with the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Statistical

Brain structural correlates of prior alcohol use disorder and their relation to cognitive impairment in individuals with mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUD) often co-occur with mood disorders (MD), negatively impacting the clinical course of both disorders and exacerbating cognitive impairments. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated lower gray matter volume (GMV) and hippocampal volume in MD and AUD, and additionally in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), nucleus accumbens (NAc), and white matter (WM) volume in AUD. However, whether the pronounced structural alterations in MD persist after remission from AUD, and their relation to cognitive impairments, remains unclear. METHOD: Individuals with MD with (MD + A

Behavioural and cognitive behavioural therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

BACKGROUND: Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is an increasingly recognised neurodevelopmental condition; that is, a neurologically-based condition which interferes with the acquisition, retention or application of specific skills. ASD is characterised by challenges with socialisation and communication, and by stereotyped and repetitive behaviours. A stereotyped behaviour is one which is repeated over and over again and which seems not to have any useful function. ASD often co-occurs with mental health disorders, including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). People with ASD may show certain co

Validity and reliability of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) in Japanese patients with bipolar disorder.

In Japan, there are currently no reliable rating scales for the evaluation of subjective cognitive impairment in patients with bipolar disorder. We studied the relationship between the Japanese version of the Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) and objective cognitive assessments in patients with bipolar disorder. We further assessed the reliability and validity of the COBRA. Forty-one patients, aged 16-64, in a remission period of bipolar disorder were recruited from Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo, Japan. The COBRA (Japanese version) and Frankfurt Compl
