Application of the Behavior Change Wheel Within the Context of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus Management.

PURPOSE: Although experiencing tinnitus can lead to many difficulties, these can be reduced by using techniques derived from cognitive behavioral therapy. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has been developed to provide an accessible intervention. The aim of this study was to describe how ICBT can facilitate tinnitus management by identifying the active ingredients of the intervention from the perspective of health behavior change. METHOD: The ICBT intervention was evaluated using the Behavior Change Wheel in eight steps across the following three stages: (1) understanding the…

Comparing the Effectiveness of Education Versus Digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults With Sickle Cell Disease: Protocol for the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Real-time Pain Management Intervention for Sickle Cell via Mobile Applications (CaRISMA) Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience significant medical and psychological stressors that affect their mental health, well-being, and disease outcomes. Digital cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been used in other patient populations and has demonstrated clinical benefits. Although evidence-based, nonpharmacological interventions for pain management are widely used in other populations, these treatments have not been well studied in SCD. Currently, there are no adequately powered large-scale clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness and dissemination potential…

The effectiveness of the intervention model based on cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing risky sexual behaviors among MSM.

METHODS: Based on CBT theory and the Internet, we established an intervention model targeting high-risk sexual behavior patterns in MSM. We then conducted a randomized controlled trial (n = 50) to assess the impact of the CBT-based intervention on high-risk sexual behaviors and gut microbiota changes in this population. RESULTS: Prior to the implementation of the intervention, 44% of the participants engaged in high-risk behaviors despite having better cognitive levels. However, preliminary findings from post-intervention investigations indicate that intervention measures based on CBT demonst

Overcoming barriers in cognitive-behavioral therapy for youth anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder: Addressing parent behaviors.

Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-established treatment for anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in youth. Although a majority of youth respond to CBT, a substantial portion remain symptomatic and/or experience a return of symptoms after completing a course of treatment. This highlights the need for further improvements to this evidence-based treatment. Given that parent behaviors can negatively influence treatment, addressing parental behaviors in CBT serves as a novel and promising treatment target to improve youth's therapeutic outcomes. The au

Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Metacognitive Therapy: Moderators of Treatment Outcomes for Children with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for childhood anxiety disorders, approximately 40% of youth remain anxious after treatment. Metacognitive therapy (MCT-c) for children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has shown promising effects. The present study aimed to examine if CBT and MCT-c show differential effects in children with primary GAD based on baseline characteristics, in a quasi-experimental design. To investigate which treatment is most beneficial for whom, three potential moderators: age, symptom severity, and comorbid social anxiety were examined. Sixty-three…

The Effect of Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Insomnia due to Methadone Maintenance Therapy: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is a common complaint of patients undergoing methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). There are limited studies about the effect of different treatments on insomnia due to MMT. In this study, we evaluated the effect of cognitive-behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBTI) on sleep disorders in patients undergoing MMT. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with insomnia due to MMT (aged 18-60 years) participated in this randomized double-blind clinical trial. The intervention group received CBTI from a clinical psychologist for 8 weeks, whereas the control group received behavior

Virtual reality therapy versus cognitive behavior therapy for social phobia: a preliminary controlled study.

Social phobia is one of the most frequent mental disorders and is accessible to two forms of scientifically validated treatments: anti-depressant drugs and cognitive behavior therapies (CBT). In this last case, graded exposure to feared social situations is one of the fundamental therapeutic ingredients. Virtual reality technologies are an interesting alternative to the standard exposure in social phobia, especially since studies have shown its usefulness for the fear of public speaking. This paper reports a preliminary study in which a virtual reality therapy (VRT), based on exposure to virtu

Application of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for negative emotions in pregnant women: a narrative review.

During the gestational period, pregnant women commonly experience negative emotional states including anxiety, depression, and childbirth fear, which are induced by dramatic physiological and psychological changes. These negative emotional disturbances not only damage maternal physical and mental health, but also may increase the risk of adverse fetal outcomes and long-term developmental abnormalities in offspring. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) is a psychological intervention modality developed on the basis of cognitive behavioral theory and delivered through network platf…

Examining fronto-limbic brain and sleep mechanisms of antidepressant effects in cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia.

Treating insomnia with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) improves depression symptoms, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. This single-arm mechanistic trial (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04424407) examined fronto-limbic and sleep mechanisms of CBT-I's antidepressant response in 48 participants (64% female; age 25-60) with insomnia and depression symptoms. Participants completed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), polysomnography (PSG), and symptom assessments before and after 6 CBT-I sessions. CBT-I resulted in reduced amygdala reactivity to fearful faces (d = 0.5

Prejudice and politics in cognitive-behavioral therapy: An indigenous perspective from Aotearoa-New Zealand and Australia.

The political dimensions of cognitive-behavioral practice are considered in the context of a range of social justice issues, including the marginalization of minorities following colonization, and the role that research and practice play in supporting conditions that maintain trauma and injustice with disempowered peoples. It is argued that critical issues for CBT practitioners who engage with Indigenous peoples in Australasia include appreciating the narrow lens of legitimization, understanding their limited capacity to account for the impacts of systemic oppression, and accommodating points

Effect of electroacupuncture versus cognitive behavioral therapy for perimenopausal insomnia: a non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Perimenopausal insomnia (PMI) significantly compromises the quality of life and daily functioning. Electroacupuncture (EA) is an effective non-pharmacological therapy for insomnia, but its efficacy compared to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is not well-established. This trial aimed to test the non-inferiority of EA compared with CBT-I for PMI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this two-arm, non-inferiority randomized controlled trial, 160 women were randomly assigned to EA or CBT-I groups (n = 80 each). CBT-I was used as an active comparator to establish whe…

Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Music Therapy on Noise-Induced Perceived Stress and Anxiety Among University Students.

BACKGROUND: University campuses are often noisy environments, and prolonged exposure to campus noise has been linked to increased stress and anxiety among students. Although many studies focus on engineering or policy solutions to manage noise, far fewer examine psychological interventions that help students cope with unavoidable noise. In particular, evidence on approaches that combine cognitive-behavioral strategies with music-based techniques remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether a structured cognitive behavioral music therapy (CBMT) program could reduce noise-induced per

Plasma short-chain fatty acid concentrations in social anxiety disorder and changes after cognitive behavioral therapy.

Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota are linked to variation in social behavior and anxiety, with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) proposed as key microbial metabolites that may mediate microbiota-brain communication. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD), but it remains unclear whether gut microbiota changes following treatment. In this longitudinal study, 46 individuals with SAD underwent nine weeks of internet-delivered CBT. Plasma concentrations of nine SCFAs were measured using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry: …

The effectiveness of supplemental and replacement blended cognitive behavioral therapy for internalizing disorders: a meta-analysis.

Blended cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT) combines the use of traditional in-clinic, face-to-face therapy sessions with online therapy platforms. The blended aspect can either be supplementary to face-to-face sessions, or a partial replacement of face-to-face sessions. While bCBT has been available for two decades, there is no statistically synthesized overview of its effectiveness in treating internalizing disorders, including anxiety and depression. In this study, we examined effectiveness in two meta-analyses: 1) comparing bCBT to treatment as usual; 2) comparing bCBT change scores from p…
