Perioperative experiences of patients with high pain catastrophizing and knee arthroplasty after receiving or not preoperative physiotherapy: Qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Among the risk factors studied for persistent pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), pain catastrophizing stands out above the others. In this regard, preoperative interventions based on pain neuroscience education or multimodal physiotherapy have been shown to be effective in reducing pain catastrophizing. OBJECTIVES: The present qualitative study aims to explore the perioperative experiences of high pain catastrophizing participants undergoing total knee arthroplasty surgery. Comparisons will be made between those who received, and those who did not receive a preoperative phy

The Brain Economy: Advancing Brain Science to Better Understand the Modern Economy.

The coming years are likely to be turbulent due to a myriad of factors or polycrisis, including an escalation in climate extremes, emerging public health threats, weak productivity, increases in global economic instability and further weakening in the integrity of global democracy. These formidable challenges are not exogenous to the economy but are in some cases generated by the system itself. They can be overcome, but only with far-reaching changes to global economics. Our current socio-economic paradigm is insufficient for addressing these complex challenges, let alone sustaining human deve

Understanding time perception through non-invasive brain stimulation techniques: A review of studies.

The present review includes transcranial magnetic and transcranial electric stimulation studies on time perception and shows that the neural processing of time requires the activity of wide range-distributed brain networks. Moreover, a critical discussion regarding non-invasive brain stimulation in the study of time processing is included to give the reader insights into the study of temporal processing in neuroscience. The cerebellum and auditory cortex seem most crucial when participants are required to estimate the passage of sub-seconds intervals and this conclusion holds independently of

Integration of transcriptomic and cytoarchitectonic data implicates a role for MAOA and TAC1 in the limbic-cortical network.

Decoding the chain from genes to cognition requires detailed insights how areas with specific gene activities and microanatomical architectures contribute to brain function and dysfunction. The Allen Human Brain Atlas contains regional gene expression data, while the JuBrain Atlas offers three-dimensional cytoarchitectonic maps reflecting interindividual variability. To date, an integrated framework that combines the analytical benefits of both scientific platforms towards a multi-level brain atlas of adult humans was not available. We have, therefore, developed JuGEx, a new method for integra

Thinking in spatial terms: decoupling spatial representation from sensorimotor control in monkey posterior parietal areas 7a and LIP.

Perhaps the simplest and most complete description of the cerebral cortex is that it is a sensorimotor controller whose primary purpose is to represent stimuli and movements, and adaptively control the mapping between them. However, in order to think, the cerebral cortex has to generate patterns of neuronal activity that encode abstract, generalized information independently of ongoing sensorimotor events. A critical question confronting cognitive systems neuroscience at present therefore is how neural signals encoding abstract information emerge within the sensorimotor control networks of the

Individual Differences in Cognitive Aging Rodent Datasets (ID-CARD): A collaborative platform for behavioral analysis across the lifespan.

Understanding cognitive aging requires approaches that capture individual variability while enabling integration across studies. In rodent models, behavioral data are central to this effort, yet cross-laboratory differences in experimental design limit comparability and constrain secondary analysis. To address this gap, we developed the Individual Differences in Cognitive Aging Rodent Datasets (ID-CARD), a first-of-its-kind collaborative repository aggregating trial-level Morris water maze data from multiple laboratories. ID-CARD is designed to support large-scale, integrative analyses and to

Dynamic functional connectivity of neurocognitive networks in children.

The human brain is highly dynamic, supporting a remarkable range of cognitive abilities that emerge over the course of development. While flexible and dynamic coordination between neural systems is firmly established for children, our understanding of brain functional organization in early life has been built largely on the implicit assumption that functional connectivity (FC) is static. Understanding the nature of dynamic neural interactions during development is a critical issue for cognitive neuroscience, with implications for neurodevelopmental pathologies that involve anomalies in brain c…

A neuroeducational approach to STEM education: Integrating real-time cognitive analysis and cognitive load theory to optimize teaching and learning at universities.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to effectively meet challenging academic requirements has become imperative for university entrants. With emerging advancements within the domain of learning neuroscience and analytics, it has become possible to analyze and track the real-time mental states of learners. This has opened several avenues to apply the theoretical perspectives of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). Though applications of neuro-technological interventions for learning have become widely sought, their effective implementation wit

Towards a domain-general mechanistic model of fatigue: application to Functional Neurological Disorder.

Fatigue is a central symptom in individuals with functional neurological disorder (FND), yet few studies have investigated fatigue in this population. While this may be surprising, given the importance of fatigue in FND, it is nevertheless understandable, given that fatigue has historically been difficult to study. However, the tools of cognitive neuroscience have allowed researchers to begin to understand fatigue as never before. Here, I review recent advances in the field of fatigue research, ranging from experimental design to objective and subjective measures of fatigue to a network of bra…

The double dissociation between cortical blindness and aphantasia: A review of 55 cases.

A long-standing assumption in cognitive neuroscience is that visual mental imagery (VMI) is "visual perception in reverse" and, as such, requires reactivation of the primary visual cortex (V1). On this view, total destruction of V1 should abolish VMI and provoke neurological aphantasia. We tested this prediction by reviewing 55 published cases of cortical blindness (CB) in which VMI abilities were assessed. Vivid VMI is repeatedly documented in CB patients with complete or near-complete bilateral destruction, disconnection, or functional loss of V1; in impaired-VMI cases with informative anato…

Roadmap for direct and indirect translation of optogenetics into discoveries and therapies for humans.

Optogenetics has transformed basic research on neural circuitry, led to diverse experimental insights into human brain function and dysfunction, and opened pathways for clinical translation based on new understanding of how specific cell types contribute to cognition and behavior. Many of these translational pathways do not rely on the direct application of optogenetics in humans, but rather develop and advance other treatment modalities by leveraging causal knowledge derived from optogenetic circuit neuroscience. However, a recent proof-of-principle study-showing that optogenetics applied dir

Non-Image-Forming Functions of Intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells.

Life on this planet is heavily influenced by light, the most critical external environmental factor. Mammals perceive environmental light mainly through three types of photoreceptors in the retina-rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). The latest discovered ipRGCs are particularly sensitive to short-wavelength light and have a unique phototransduction mechanism, compared with rods and cones. Piles of evidence suggest that ipRGCs mediate a series of light-regulated physiological functions such as circadian rhythms, sleep, metabolic homeostasis, mood, deve

Functional auditory disorders.

There are a number of auditory symptom syndromes that can develop without an organic basis. Some of these, such as nonorganic hearing loss, affect populations similar to those presenting with functional somatosensory and motor symptoms, while others, such as musical hallucination, affect populations with a significantly different demographic and require different treatment strategies. Many of these conditions owe their origin to measurably abnormal peripheral sensory pathology or brain network activity, but their pathological impact is often due, at least in part, to overamplification of the s

Neuroscience and eating disorders: the allocentric lock hypothesis.

Evidence from psychology and neuroscience indicates that our spatial experience, including the bodily one, involves the integration of different sensory inputs within two different reference frames egocentric (body as reference of first-person experience) and allocentric (body as object in the physical world). Even if functional relations between these two frames are usually limited, they influence each other during the interaction between long- and short-term memory processes in spatial cognition. If, for some reasons, this process is impaired, the egocentric sensory inputs are no more able t

Impaired locomotion and associative learning induced by chronic exposure to the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine in a widely used molluscan model.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug and a persistent aquatic contaminant due to its high global consumption and poor removal by wastewater treatment plants. Although numerous studies have documented its adverse effects on aquatic organisms, knowledge about its impact on learning and the underlying neuronal mechanisms in invertebrates remains limited. Here, we investigated the behavioral and cellular effects of chronic exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of CBZ (1 μg L-1) in the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis), a well-established model in neuroscience

Simultaneous task-based BOLD-fMRI and [18-F] FDG functional PET for measurement of neuronal metabolism in the human visual cortex.

Studies of task-evoked brain activity are the cornerstone of cognitive neuroscience, and unravel the spatial and temporal brain dynamics of cognition in health and disease. Blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI) is one of the most common methods of studying brain function in humans. BOLD-fMRI indirectly infers neuronal activity from regional changes in blood oxygenation and is not a quantitative metric of brain function. Regional variation in glucose metabolism, measured using [18-F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), provide…

Psychological Therapy for Centralized Pain: An Integrative Assessment and Treatment Model.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is a significant health problem that is increasing in prevalence, and advances in treatment are needed. METHODS: We briefly review the leading evidence-based psychological therapies for chronic pain-cognitive-behavioral and acceptance/mindfulness-based therapies-and examine several limitations and missing perspectives of these approaches. We review six lesser-known interventions that address these limitations, and we describe our integrative model for psychological assessment and treatment of centralized pain. We present a typical patient and describe how we apply this
