The relationship of adenomatous polyps of the sigmoid colon with cigarette smoking and alcohol use was investigated in male self-defense officials in Japan. In the comparison between 116 cases and 930 controls, total ethanol intake was not at all associated with the risk of adenomatous polyps, but cigarette smoking was strongly related to adenomatous polyps. Radiological findings in three cases of sigmoid colon carcinoma invading the urinary bladder are reported. An irregular spiculated margin or nodular indentations in region of bladder dome were seen on intravenous urography. A soft tissue mass contiguous with an irregularly thickened urinary bladder wall and a circumferentially thickened sigmoid colon wall were demonstrated on CT and sonography and led to the correct diagnosis.

We present here the detailed pathologic findings in the resected colon and rectum from a paraplegic patient with severely symptomatic diversion colitis and lack of anorectal function. The seventh case of probable cefazolin-induced pseudomembranous colitis is reported. Perforation of the colon necessitated sigmoid resection. The postoperative course was protracted, and illustrates the difficulty of managing advanced pseudomembranous colitis when the oral route of antibiotic administration is not available. Although rare, pseudomembranous colitis related to cefazolin administration is a potentially fatal complication. The routine use of prophylactic antibiotics must be weighed against this possibility.

This paper presents a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma localized in the sigmoid colon with multiple metastases in the right lobe of the liver and describes the pathological and microscopic aspects, clinical course and characteristics. The primary localization in the sigmoid colon is extremely rare, this being only the second case reported.

The colonic myoelectric spiking activity was recorded in 10 healthy subjects using an intraluminal tube equipped with four bipolar Ag-AgCl ring electrodes fixed 10 cm apart. Gastrointestinal (GI) leiomyomas are rare benign smooth muscle tumors, most commonly arising in the esophagus and stomach. Their occurrence in the colon is uncommon, and synchronous involvement of multiple colonic sites is exceedingly rare. We report a case of a young male who underwent colonoscopic evaluation for GI symptoms, which revealed polypoidal lesions in the sigmoid colon and at the ileocecal valve. A case of pedunculated colonic adenoma with pseudocarcinomatous invasion and squamous metaplasia occurring in the sigmoid colon is reported. The patient was a 65-year-old man who visited our hospital for further evaluation of a positive fecal occult blood test. PURPOSE: The use of a hydrogel spacer inserted into recto-vaginal fossa is a valuable strategy to mitigate radiation exposure to the rectum during radiation therapy for female pelvic malignancies. We examined retrospectively 100 sigmoid colon resection specimens removed for diverticulitis (DD [diverticular disease]-diverticulitis), 53 adenocarcinoma specimens that also had diverticulosis (DD-adenocarcinoma), and 50 adenocarcinoma specimens that did not have DD (adenocarcinoma only) to study the mucosal changes that occur in DD.
