Legionnaires' disease: clinical, epidemiological, and public health perspectives.

Legionnaires' disease is a modern environmental infectious disease. It stems from the capacity of the causative agent, Legionella, to multiply within amoebae in warm water and the use, during the 20th century, of devices that maintain water at warm temperatures and produce aerosols. When contaminated with Legionella, aerosols consisting of respirable droplets place the bacteria in juxtaposition with alveolar macrophages, which, as with amoebae, they may parasitize, resulting in illness in susceptible persons. The disease is much more common than previously appreciated with at least 13,000 case

Sustainability of infectious disease elimination: a scoping review on integrating treatment and surveillance within health systems.

BACKGROUND: Global infectious disease elimination programmes have historically relied on vertical, donor-driven approaches. However, amid reduced global funding and increased emphasis on country ownership and sustainability, interest in infectious disease-specific activities integrated into routine health systems is growing. Yet evidence on how integration has been implemented remains fragmented. This scoping review takes a multi-disease approach to assess the extent and nature of evidence on the integration of infectious disease elimination and eradication programmes into routine health syste

Need for Aeromedical Evacuation High-Level Containment Transport Guidelines.

Circumstances exist that call for the aeromedical evacuation high-level containment transport (AE-HLCT) of patients with highly hazardous communicable diseases. A small number of organizations maintain AE-HLCT capabilities, and little is publicly available regarding the practices. The time is ripe for the development of standards and consensus guidelines involving AE-HLCT.

A pilot survey of the U.S. medical waste industry to determine training needs for safely handling highly infectious waste.

BACKGROUND: The recent Ebola outbreak led to the development of Ebola virus disease (EVD) best practices in clinical settings. However, after the care of EVD patients, proper medical waste management and disposal was identified as a crucial component to containing the virus. Category A waste-contaminated with EVD and other highly infectious pathogens-is strictly regulated by governmental agencies, and led to only several facilities willing to accept the waste. METHODS: A pilot survey was administered to determine if U.S. medical waste facilities are prepared to handle or transport category A

European strategy for vaccine development against infectious diseases.

Immunisation efforts save millions of lives every year, but vaccines hold the potential to deliver even greater health benefits for mankind. Vaccine research and development is highly complex, and it requires concerted public funding efforts to support. In this paper we discuss EU funding priorities and the resulting recent advancements in European vaccine research, and we lay out the EU strategy for aiding promising vaccine candidates to successfully reach the market.

International collaborative research on infectious diseases by Japanese universities and institutes in Asia and Africa, with a special emphasis on J-GRID.

In developed countries including Japan, malignant tumor (cancer), heart disease and cerebral apoplexy are major causes of death, but infectious diseases are still responsible for a high number of deaths in developing countries, especially among children aged less than 5 years. World Health Statistics published by WHO reports a high percentage of mortality from infectious diseases in children, and many of these diseases may be subject to transmission across borders and could possibly invade Japan. Given this situation, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) o

In May 1991 a decree supplementing the federal Epidemic Law concerning the mandatory notification of communicable diseases was implemented by the Ministry of Health in Saxony-Anhalt. This was updated and newly implemented in 1997. With implementation of the national Protection against Infection Act in 2001 further amendment of the state regulation (published in April 2005) be came necessary. The following diseases or laboratory evidence of the underlying pathogens, respectively, will now be notifiable with inclusion of the affected individual's name: aseptic meningitis, mumps, rubella, varicel

Rational spatio-temporal strategies for controlling a Chagas disease vector in urban environments.

The rational design of interventions is critical to controlling communicable diseases, especially in urban environments. In the case of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans, successful control is stymied by the return of the insect after the effectiveness of the insecticide wanes. Here, we adapt a genetic algorithm, originally developed for the travelling salesman problem, to improve the spatio-temporal design of insecticide campaigns against T. infestans, in a complex urban environment. We find a strategy that reduces the expected instances of vector return 34-fold compared with the c

An integral equation model for the control of a smallpox outbreak.

An integral equation model of a smallpox epidemic is proposed. The model structures the incidence of infection among the household, the workplace, the wider community and a health-care facility; and incorporates a finite incubation period and plausible infectivity functions. Linearisation of the model is appropriate for small epidemics, and enables analytic expressions to be derived for the basic reproduction number and the size of the epidemic. The effects of control interventions (vaccination, isolation, quarantine and public education) are explored for a smallpox epidemic following an impor

[The road to elimination: an overview of neglected infectious diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Neglected infectious diseases (NID) affect mainly isolated populations living in isolation and in poor socioeconomic conditions. These diseases, by their chronic and silent nature, often affect communities with a weak political voice. This translates into very little attention or political priority; which is reflected in minimal and insufficient preventive measures, monitoring and control. However, there is evidence this situation is changing favorably in some countries of the Americas. In recent years, several resolutions (official agreement of the member countries of the Pan American Health

Schistosomiasis control in Saudi Arabia with special reference to the period 1983-1988.

Schistosomiasis control operations carried out between 1983 and 1988 are described, together with information of the impact of schistosomiasis. The prevalence of schistosomiasis has declined from 9.5% in 1983 to 1.8% in 1988 (P less than 0.05). Bulinus truncatus, B. beccarii, and B. reticulatus wrighti are the intermediate hosts of S. haematobium in Saudi Arabia and are distributed unevenly in the different regions. Biomphalaria arabica is the intermediate host of S. mansoni and is found wherever the disease is endemic. The influx of expatriate workers from countries where schistosomiasis is e

Exploring patient's clinical outcomes, hospital costs, and satisfaction after the implementation of integrated clinical pathway-based nursing practice model.

INTRODUCTION: Hospitals provide essential health services, focusing on quality, safety, and patient-centered care. The rising prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Indonesia has led to increased National Health Insurance (NHI) costs, with communicable diseases representing a significant burden despite global progress in disease control. Tuberculosis remains a major global health concern, causing 1.25 million deaths in 2023, while Indonesia ranks second globally for tuberculosis burden, accounting for 10% of global TB cases with an estimated 969,000 cases annually. Despite

Ancient dental calculus reveals oral microbiome shifts associated with lifestyle and disease in Great Britain.

The prevalence of chronic, non-communicable diseases has risen sharply in recent decades, especially in industrialized countries. While several studies implicate the microbiome in this trend, few have examined the evolutionary history of industrialized microbiomes. Here we sampled 235 ancient dental calculus samples from individuals living in Great Britain (∼2200 BCE to 1853 CE), including 127 well-contextualized London adults. We reconstructed their microbial history spanning the transition to industrialization. After controlling for oral geography and technical biases, we identified multiple

The global burden of climate-sensitive diseases in Brazil: the national and subnational estimates and analysis, 1990-2017.

BACKGROUND: Climatic factors have been associated with the occurrence of several diseases known as climate-sensitive diseases (CSDs). We selected the following categories of disease to represent CSDs for this study: vector-borne diseases (dengue, leishmaniasis, malaria, schistosomiasis, yellow fever, and zika), infectious-diseases (respiratory infections), non-communicable diseases (chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases) and water-borne diseases (diarrhea). This study aimed to describe the historical trends and spatial distribution of mortality and morbidity of these selected Climate

Modelling infectious disease transmission dynamics in conference environments: An agent-based approach.

The looming threat of infectious diseases perpetually challenges the global public health landscape. Central to addressing this concern is the imperative to prevent and manage disease transmission during pandemics, particularly in unique settings. This study addresses the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases within conference venues by presenting a computational model that simulates transmission processes over a condensed timeframe (one day), beginning with sporadic cases. Our model captures the activities of individual attendees within the conference venue, including meetings, rest br
