The urban and community health pathway: preparing socially responsive physicians through community-engaged learning.

One of five options for the new required Medical College of Wisconsin Pathways program, the Urban and Community Health Pathway (UCHP), links training with community needs and assets to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide effective care in urban, underserved settings; promote community health; and reduce health disparities. Students spend at least 10 hours per month on pathway activities: 4 hours of core material delivered through readings, didactics, case discussions, and site visits; and at least 6 hours of experiential noncore activities applying core compet

Communication for polio eradication: improving the quality of communication programming through real-time monitoring and evaluation.

Communication is a critical component in assuring that children are fully immunized and that simultaneous immunity is attained and maintained across large geographic areas for disease eradication and control initiatives. If service delivery is of good quality and outreach to the population is active, effective communication--through advocacy, social mobilization, and program communication (including behavior change activities and interpersonal communication)--will assist in raising awareness, creating and sustaining demand, preventing or dispelling misinformation and doubts, encouraging accept

Changes in community socioeconomic status and racial distribution associated with gonorrhea rates: an analysis at the community level.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea persists despite nationwide disease control measures. Research has not focused on the longitudinal impact of community characteristics on gonorrhea. The authors assessed the association between community demographic and socioeconomic changes and gonorrhea rates. METHODS: Gonorrhea incident cases reported in 1992-1993 and 2001-2002 were aggregated at the census tract level in New York State exclusive of New York City and then matched to the census data. Census tract characteristics were obtained from the 1990 and 2000 decennial censuses and adjusted for changes in geograp

Validation of the Health Care Communication Questionnaire (HCCQ) to measure outpatients' experience of communication with hospital staff.

OBJECTIVE: All healthcare workers' communication skills are recognised as valuable indicators of quality of care from the patient's perspective. Most of the studies measure doctor-patient communication, giving scarce attention to other professionals. This study is aimed at developing and providing preliminary validation of a questionnaire to measure outpatients' experience of communication with hospital personnel other than doctors. METHODS: Small groups of outpatients and hospital staffs were involved in identifying the domains and generating the items. A quantitative validation phase involv

An ecological assessment of community-based interventions for prevention and health promotion: approaches to measuring community coalitions.

Presented an ecological assessment of a community coalition to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse, and related risks. Ecological assessment is defined as occurring at multiple social levels and along a continuum of stages of coalition readiness. The assessment is aided by the triangulation, or combining of assessment methods and strategies. Measures used to assess the coalition's formation, implementation of community initiatives, and production of community impacts are described, along with the triangulation strategies used to enhance the assessment findings.

Community perceptions and attitudes regarding epilepsy and disease cost after implementation of a community-based epilepsy treatment program in onchocerciasis-endemic communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: In October 2017, a community-based epilepsy treatment program (CBETP) was initiated in the Logo health zone (Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo), consisting mainly of community epilepsy education, provision of free antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and monthly follow-up of persons with epilepsy (PWE). Prior to the implementation of the CBETP, qualitative research had revealed several misconceptions about the cause of epilepsy, major epilepsy-related stigma, and high economic cost for families of PWE mainly because of costly treatment by traditional healers. One year after the i

An ICT-enabled community oriented primary care intervention in mining communities during COVID-19 (2019-2022): perceived changes in the role and place of community health workers.

BACKGROUND: This is a study of service provider perceptions of the place, role and practices of CHWs in a four-year, large-scale private sector funded, public service ICT-enabled COPC intervention with rural and remote mining communities. Like all South African communities, apart from large mining house employees and some contractors, most people use available public healthcare services and private traditional as well as limited allopathic private sector providers. In addition to the limitations of facility centred primary healthcare and a fragmented health care system, the many negative healt

Learning from the community: early medical students' territory-based immersion with community health agents in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Early immersion of medical students in Primary Health Care (PHC) settings is vital for fostering socially accountable medical education. In Brazil, PHC is territorially organised, and Community Health Agents (CHAs) play a central role in mediating healthcare delivery. However, pedagogical descriptions of supervised, CHA-led student immersion experiences remain limited. This study addresses this gap by presenting an interpretive qualitative analysis of a structured, territory-based immersion designed for first-year medical students. METHODS: Between March and October 2025, seventy-

Decoupling Community Complexity From Efficacy: A Meta-Analysis of Synthetic Microbial Communities for Plant Stress Resilience.

Drought, salinity, pollution and nutrient deficiency substantially impair plant growth by disrupting water balance, ion homoeostasis, redox regulation and metabolism. Synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) represent a frontier in microbiome engineering, theoretically offering superior stability over single-strain inoculants through functional redundancy. However, the design rules governing their efficacy - specifically the trade-off between community complexity and phenotypic output - remain empirically unresolved. This meta-analysis evaluated how synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) a
