Experiences, impacts and service needs of injured and ill workers in the WSIB process: evidence from Thunder Bay and District (Ontario, Canada).

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experience negative physical, social and psychological ramifications when they are hurt or become ill at work. Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is intended to mitigate these effects, yet the WSIB process can be difficult. Supports for injured workers can be fragmented and scarce, especially in underserved areas. We describe the experiences and mental health needs of injured and ill Northwestern Ontario workers in the WSIB process, in order to promote system improvements. METHODS: Community-recruited injured and ill workers (n = 40) from Thunder B

Disclosure, Privacy and Workplace Accommodation of Episodic Disabilities: Organizational Perspectives on Disability Communication-Support Processes to Sustain Employment.

Purpose Employers increasingly are asked to accommodate workers living with physical and mental health conditions that cause episodic disability, where periods of wellness are punctuated by intermittent and often unpredictable activity limitations (e.g., depression, anxiety, arthritis, colitis). Episodic disabilities may be challenging for workplaces which must comply with legislation protecting the privacy of health information while believing they would benefit from personal health details to meet a worker's accommodation needs. This research aimed to understand organizational perspectives o

Dust or disease? Perceptions of influenza in rural Southern Malawi.

Influenza virus infections cause between 291 243 and 645 832 deaths annually, with the highest burden in low-income settings. Research in high-income countries has examined public understanding of influenza, but there is little information on views and behaviours about influenza in low-income countries. We explored communities' ideas about the severity, causes, prevention and treatment of influenza in Chikwawa district, Malawi. We conducted 64 in-depth interviews with parents of children aged <5 years, and 7 focus groups with community health workers, parents, and traditional healers. Data wer…

Frontline Social Service Workers' Experiences Supporting Sexual and Reproductive Health of People Who Have Been Incarcerated.

BACKGROUND: Research on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care among women and gender-diverse people in prisons in Canada demonstrates gaps in access to health information and institutional barriers to care. Women and gender-diverse people leaving prison often access community supports provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The experiences, needs and skills of staff at these organizations with respect to supporting client SRH are under-researched. METHODS: This study followed a community-based design involving four qualitative focus groups at partner organization sites, for a t

Impact of ASHA training on active case detection of visceral leishmaniasis in Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND: One of the major challenges for management of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is early diagnosis of cases to improve treatment outcome and reduce transmission. We have therefore investigated active case detection of VL with the help of accredited social health activists (ASHA). ASHAs are women who live in the community and receive performance-based incentives for overseeing maternal and other health-related issues in their village. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDING: Through conducting interviews with 400 randomly selected ASHAs from four primary health care centers (PHCs), it was observed

What Can a Badge Do? A Pilot Study of the Vot-ER Badge in a Community Health Setting.

Civic engagement is an important example of health and health care inequity in the United States, with voting being an active form of civic engagement that allows citizens to be involved in the political processes that directly impact their health. Existing literature indicates that health care workers are willing to assist in voter registration efforts and are a trusted, nonpartisan source for patients. As such, Vot-ER was founded in 2019 to support nonpartisan voter registration efforts through health care sites, initially through emergency departments. Despite improvements in voter represen
