Immunologic methods have been used with varying success in the diagnosis and prognosis of systemic mycoses in animals. Information on the application of the tests and on the interpretation of test results in monitoring therapy was complied. Serotesting provided diagnostic and prognostic data in immunocompetent patients, and predicted relapse in one case after apparent clinical cure. Indirect haemagglutination (IHA), agglutination and complement fixation tests (CFT) for Bordetella pertussis antibodies were compared on paired sera from 52 suspected cases of whooping cough and single sera from 83 children with no recent history of whooping cough. Double electroimmunodiffusion (EID) was adapted for detection of antibodies to Coccidioides immitis. In a limited experiment with canine serums, the test was found to be qualitatively as sensitive as the complement-fixation (CF) test. Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) has been infrequently reported as a cause of proctitis. We report 3 homosexual men with chronic ulcerative proctitis which was cured after therapy for LGV. The complement fixation test for LGV was positive in 2 of the 3 patients.

The authors reviewed over 50 publications in which the sensitivity and specificity values of assays used for the detection of exposure to Brucella abortus had been examined. The sum of the sensitivity and specificity values for each test was averaged to give a performance index (PI) and allow for a comparison between the different methodologies.
