Difficulties in differential diagnosis of sagittal synostosis (scaphocephaly).

UNLABELLED: Craniosynostosis is characterized by congenital absence or premature closure of skull sutures. The most common form of craniosynostosis is synostosis of sagittal suture followed by scaphocephaly. There are some head deformities similar to scaphocephaly such as positional and constitutional dolichocephaly, etc. These patients have no sagittal suture synostosis. However, there are difficulties in differential diagnosis between these deformities and scaphocephaly. OBJECTIVE: To develop differential diagnostic criteria between dolichocephalic head deformities and true scaphocephaly fo

Automated segmentation and prediction of intervertebral disc morphology and uniaxial deformations from MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The measurement of in vivo intervertebral disc (IVD) mechanics may be used to understand the etiology of IVD degeneration and low back pain (LBP). To this end, our lab has developed methods to measure IVD morphology and uniaxial compressive deformation (% change in IVD height) resulting from dynamic activity, in vivo, using magnetic resonance images (MRI). However, due to the time-intensive nature of manual image segmentation, we sought to validate an image segmentation algorithm that could accurately and reliably reproduce models of in vivo tissue mechanics. DESIGN: Therefore, we

Contextual factors affecting the education needs of lymphoedema health professionals regarding genital oedema.

The impact of the care context on education needs of health professionals who conservatively manage patients with genital oedema is unknown. This study aimed to explore the contextual factors surrounding the treatment of patients with genital oedema that affect the education needs of lymphoedema practitioners, and identify interventions that might support both practitioners and patients. Following scoping groups in Australia and the US, formal focus groups were held with lymphoedema practitioners in England, Wales and the US, as part of an international mixed-method project in 2019. Acute airway management.

Acute airway management has challenged clinicians for nearly four millennia. History underscores the discoveries of surgeons and anesthesiologists, whose advances in technology and surgical technique have transformed management algorithms from primarily surgical tracheostomy, to transoral endotracheal intubation under direct laryngoscopy. Despite this progress and a better understanding of airway anatomy, physiology and pathogenesis of disease, the acute airway, whether obstructed, traumatically disrupted, or externally compressed, remains a life-threatening challenge. The role of all clinicia

Fast, precise, and accurate myocardial T1 mapping using a radial MOLLI sequence with FLASH readout.

PURPOSE: Quantitative cardiac MRI, and more particularly T1 mapping, has become a most important modality to characterize myocardial tissue. In this work, the value of a radial variant of the conventional modified Look-Locker inversion recovery sequence (raMOLLI) is demonstrated. METHODS: The raMOLLI acquisition scheme consisted of five radial echo trains of 80 spokes acquired using either a fast low-angle shot (FLASH) or a true fast imaging with steady-state-precession (TrueFISP) readout at different time points after a single magnetization inversion. View sharing combined with a compressed

Accelerated noncontrast-enhanced 4-dimensional intracranial MR angiography using golden-angle stack-of-stars trajectory and compressed sensing with magnitude subtraction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and performance of compressed sensing (CS) with magnitude subtraction regularization in accelerating non-contrast-enhanced dynamic intracranial MR angiography (NCE-dMRA). METHODS: A CS algorithm was introduced in NCE-dMRA by exploiting the sparsity of the magnitude difference of the control and label images. The NCE-dMRA data were acquired using golden-angle stack-of-stars trajectory on six healthy volunteers and one patient with arteriovenous fistula. Images were reconstructed using (i) the proposed magnitude-subtraction CS (MS-CS); (ii) complex-subtracti

Pain outcomes in patients with bone metastases from advanced cancer: assessment and management with bone-targeting agents.

Bone metastases in advanced cancer frequently cause painful complications that impair patient physical activity and negatively affect quality of life. Pain is often underreported and poorly managed in these patients. The most commonly used pain assessment instruments are visual analogue scales, a single-item measure, and the Brief Pain Inventory Questionnaire-Short Form. The World Health Organization analgesic ladder and the Analgesic Quantification Algorithm are used to evaluate analgesic use. Bone-targeting agents, such as denosumab or bisphosphonates, prevent skeletal complications (i.e., r

Pituitary incidentaloma.

Pituitary incidentalomas (PIs) are commonly encountered in clinical practice. While most are microincidentalomas (<1 cm) and not functional, in some cases their identification may lead to discovery of unrecognized abnormalities such as pituitary hormonal deficiencies, excess hormone secretion or visual field defects. Although the majority are pituitary adenomas, the potential list of differential diagnosis is extensive. A limited biochemical work up for asymptomatic patients with microincidentalomas, to include measurement of prolactin and IGF-1, is reasonable, with further studies to be tailo

Bone health and prostate cancer.

Bone metastases are a substantial burden to men with advanced prostate cancer as they often cause pain and can cause fractures and spinal cord compression. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts are both pathologically activated in the setting of prostate cancer bone metastases. As osteoclast activation is associated with disease progression, skeletal complications and death, osteoclast-targeted therapies are a rational approach to disease management. Zoledronic acid is standard of care for castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastases as it reduces the risk for skeletal-related events. Addit

Validity of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis I in clinical and research settings.

The lack of standardized diagnostic criteria for defining clinical subtypes of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) was the main motive to create the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD), which were provided to allow standardization and replication of research into the most common forms of muscle- and joint-related TMD. The RDC/TMD offered improvement compared to the older literature: the use of one system classifying TMD subgroups and the introduction of a dual-axis classification. The aim of this Focus Article is to appraise the RDC/TMD Axis I (physical findings). Since the original p

The representational bottleneck in rehabilitation AI: from human-cognitive proxies to pathway-based clinical representations.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is often framed as a problem of model performance. This view overlooks a prior representational problem: many clinical data are human-cognitive proxies built for communication, documentation, classification, or administration rather than high-fidelity computational access to clinical phenomena. In rehabilitation medicine, movement quality, compensatory strategy, sensorimotor integration, fatigue-related deterioration, and postural instability are frequently compressed into proxy measures such as TUG, BBS, FMA, ECOG performance status, diagnosis codes,

A Shape Analysis Algorithm Quantifies Spatial Morphology and Context of 2D to 3D Cell Culture for Novel Quantitation of Phenotypes.

Numerous studies have shown that the morphological phenotype of a cell or organoid correlates with its susceptibility to anti-cancer agents. However, traditional methods of measuring phenotype rely on spatial metrics such as area, volume, perimeter, and signal intensity, which work but are limited. These approaches cannot measure many crucial features of spatial context, such as chirality, a property of left- and right-handedness. Volume cannot be used to register chirality because the left and right shoes have the same volume. Though spatial context in the form of chirality, gravity direction

Software-Defined UHF RFID Asset Tracking in Metallic Aircraft Cabins via IMU-Assisted Adaptive Kalman Filtering and Distilled Edge Intelligence.

Passive Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems deployed in metallic commercial aircraft cabins suffer from severe multipath fading, non-stationary channel dynamics, and operator gait-induced signal jitter. Addressing these challenges without physical airframe modifications or regulatory recertification remains a critical operational bottleneck. This paper presents an edge-native, software-defined framework that integrates micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) inertial measurements with an IMU-assisted Adaptive Kalman Filter (AKF) and a distilled surrogate deci

Robust automated three-dimensional speed-of-sound compensation for hemispherical photoacoustic computed tomography.

Three-dimensional hemispherical photoacoustic computed tomography provides vital structural information for non-invasive preclinical research. However, speed-of-sound heterogeneity between the coupling water and biological tissue induces wavefront aberrations, resulting in tangential blurring and ghosting artifacts. Traditional compensation typically relies on simplistic ellipsoidal fitting, which fails to capture irregular tissue boundaries, or utilizes complex multimodal ultrasound hardware that significantly increases system cost.To address these limitations, we introduce an automated, low-

Replacing Attention With Modality-Wise Convolution for Energy-Efficient PPG-Based Heart Rate Estimation Using Knowledge Distillation.

Continuous monitoring of Hearth Rate (HR) based on photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors is an essential capability of nearly all wrist-worn devices. However, arm movements lead to the creation of Motion Artifacts (MA), affecting the accuracy of HR tracking using PPG sensors. This problem is commonly tackled by exploiting the recorded accelerometer data to correlate them with the PPG signal and eventually clean it. Thus, automatic fusion techniques based on Deep Learning (DL) algorithms have been proposed, but they are considered too large and complex to be deployed on wearable devices. The curre

3D parametric finite element models to assess the mechanical role of the bone-lesion interface in human metastatic vertebrae.

Vertebral bone metastases are frequent in oncological patients and lead to a significant risk of vertebral fractures. Computational modelling offers a valuable tool for investigating how metastatic lesions affect the mechanical stability and integrity of the spine. This study presents the development of a Python-based algorithm for a 3D subject-specific parametric finite element model (SS-parFEM) designed to semi-automatically generate simplified spine segments that reproduce deformation patterns similar to those observed experimentally. The model represents a metastatic vertebra including the
