In Silico Chemogenomics Drug Repositioning Strategies for Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Only ~1% of all drug candidates against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) have reached clinical trials in the last decades, underscoring the need for new, safe and effective treatments. In such context, drug repositioning, which allows finding novel indications for approved drugs whose pharmacokinetic and safety profiles are already known, emerging as a promising strategy for tackling NTDs. Chemogenomics is a direct descendent of the typical drug discovery process that involves the systematic screening of chemical compounds against drug targets in high-throughput screening (HTS) efforts, for

Deep Learning for Image Quality Assessment of Fundus Images in Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Accurate image-based medical diagnosis relies upon adequate image quality and clarity. This has important implications for clinical diagnosis, and for emerging methods such as telemedicine and computer-based image analysis. In this study, we trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically assess the quality of retinal fundus images in a representative ophthalmic disease, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). 6,043 wide-angle fundus images were collected from preterm infants during routine ROP screening examinations. Images were assessed by clinical experts for quality regarding abili

Multispectral medical image fusion in Contourlet domain for computer based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Computer based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can be performed by dint of the analysis of the functional and structural changes in the brain. Multispectral image fusion deliberates upon fusion of the complementary information while discarding the surplus information to achieve a solitary image which encloses both spatial and spectral details. This paper presents a Non-Sub-sampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT) based multispectral image fusion model for computer-aided diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The proposed fusion methodology involves color transformation of the input multispectral image.

Time to get rid of the 'Modular' in neuropsychology: a unified theory of anosognosia as aberrant predictive coding.

Cognitive neuroscience, being more inclusive and ambitious in scope than cognitive neuropsychology, seems to have taken the place of the latter within the modern neurosciences. Nevertheless, recent advances in the neurosciences afford neuropsychology with epistemic possibilities that simply did not exist even 15 years ago. Human lesion studies still have an important role to play in shaping such possibilities, particularly when combined with other methods of enquiry. I first outline theoretical and methodological advances within the neurosciences that can inform and shape the rebirth of a dyna

A comparative study between cone-beam computed tomography and periapical radiographs in the diagnosis of simulated endodontic complications.

AIM: To compare cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) with periapical radiography for the identification of simulated endodontic complications. METHODOLOGY: Sixteen human teeth, in three mandibles, were submitted to the following simulated endodontic complications: G1) fractured endodontic file; G2) root perforation; G3) cast post with deviation; G4) external root resorption. Periapical radiographs were taken of each tooth at three different angles, and CBCT scan was taken. One calibrated examiner who was specialized in dental radiology interpreted the images. The results were analysed using t

Understanding the evolution of epistemic emotions research: a bibliometric review from 2005 to 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Epistemic emotions play a central role in fostering cognitive engagement and knowledge construction. Although research on epistemic emotions has expanded considerably over the past two decades, a comprehensive synthesis of the field's intellectual structure, thematic development, and emerging researchdirections has been lacking. METHODS: This study addresses this gap through a bibliometric analysis of 185 publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science between 2005 and 2024 using Biblioshiny in R. The analysis examined publication trends, influential authors, journals, institu

A station-wise approach to liver anatomy for linear EUS.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Linear EUS has emerged as a key tool for liver assessment and intervention. However, its adoption for liver segmentation remains limited because of the absence of fixed anatomical landmarks and overlapping views. This study proposes a station-wise approach to simplify liver anatomy interpretation during EUS, correlating these findings with computed tomography imaging for greater comprehensibility. METHODS: EUS examinations were conducted using a linear echoendoscope with the patient in a left lateral position under deep sedation. A systematic station-wise methodology was

The Impact of Quantifying Human Locomotor Activity on Examining Sleep-Wake Cycles.

Actigraphy quantifies human locomotor activity by measuring wrist acceleration via wearable devices at relatively high rates and converting it into lower-temporal-resolution activity values; however, the computational implementations of this data compression differ substantially across manufacturers. Building on our previous work comparing activity determination methods, we have investigated how they (e.g., digital filtering and data compression) influence nonparametric circadian rhythm analysis and sleep-wake scoring. In addition to our generalized actigraphic framework, we have also emulated

3D Multi-Modality Medical Imaging: Combining Anatomical and Infrared Thermal Images for 3D Reconstruction.

Medical thermography provides an overview of the human body with two-dimensional (2D) information that assists the identification of temperature changes, based on the analysis of surface distribution. However, this approach lacks spatial depth information, which can be enhanced by adding multiple images or three-dimensional (3D) systems. Therefore, the methodology applied for this paper generates a 3D point cloud (from thermal infrared images), a 3D geometry model (from CT images), and the segmented inner anatomical structures. Thus, the following computational processing was employed: Structu

Older adults' pain communication: the effect of interruption.

The effect of interrupting older adults as they talk about their osteoarthritis pain was examined in a secondary analysis using a nonrandomized two-group design. Participants were part of a study in which older adults orally responded to a series of three pain questions asked by a videotaped practitioner presented on a computer screen. The initial 96 participants were given visual and auditory cues to touch the computer screen to continue to the next question. The remaining 216 participants received only the visual cue after the auditory cue was noted to interrupt participant responses. Older

Learning nursing procedures: the influence of simulator fidelity and student gender on teaching effectiveness.

Simulation technologies are gaining widespread acceptance across a variety of educational domains and applications. The current research examines whether basic nursing procedure training with high-fidelity versus low-fidelity mannequins results in differential skill acquisition and perceptions of simulator utility. Fifty-two first-year students were taught nasogastric tube and indwelling urinary catheter insertion in one of two ways. The first group learned nasogastric tube and urinary catheter insertion using high-fidelity and low-fidelity mannequins, respectively, and the second group learne

Mapping the human thalamus: a historical review of thalamic atlases from histology to modern neuroanatomy.

This review outlines the development of thalamic atlases from early post-mortem 2D histological maps to modern 3D multimodal atlases used in neuroscience and clinical practice. Given the central role of the thalamus in sensory processing, movement, and cognition, accurate anatomical mapping has been essential for both research and neurosurgical targeting. By synthesizing historical and modern approaches, we highlight the methodological advances, such as the development of thalamus-specific MRI sequences, that have improved the precision of thalamic nuclei delineation. We focus on open-source a

Electron-rich benzofulvenes as effective dipolarophiles in copper(i)-catalyzed asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides.

A series of benzofulvenes without any electron-withdrawing substituents were employed as 2π-type dipolarophiles for the first time to participate in Cu(i)-catalyzed asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (1,3-DC) reactions of azomethine ylides. An intrinsic non-benzenoid aromatic characteristic from benzofulvenes serves as a key driving force for activation of the electron-rich benzofulvenes. Utilizing the current methodology, a wide range of multi-substituted chiral spiro-pyrrolidine derivatives containing two contiguous all-carbon quaternary centers were formed in good yield with exclusive che

3D CT cinematic rendering of the spleen: Potential role in problem solving.

Cinematic rendering (CR) is a new 3D visualization methodology for volumetric diagnostic imaging including computed tomography (CT) datasets composed of isotropic voxels. CR produces photorealistic images with enhanced detail relative to other 3D visualization methods and realistic shadowing. In this review, we provide a number of examples of splenic pathology visualized with CR including conditions affecting the splenic vasculature, neoplasms, and accessory spleens. These examples are compared to 2D CT and traditional 3D CT techniques and the potential advantages of CR are highlighted. CR dis
