Molluscum contagiosum is common in HIV disease and available therapies have a poor success rate and require frequent clinic visits. Interferon alpha has been used to treat recalcitrant condylomata acuminata and this study was undertaken to assess the use of this treatment in unresponsive molluscum contagiosum. Sixteen pregnant women with genital condylomata acuminata were treated with laser vaporization to assess effectiveness, complication rate, and impact on recurrence. Patients were treated at a gestational age of 13-35 weeks. No recurrences occurred before delivery. Five patients experienced uterine contractions before 37 weeks. Only one delivery before 37 weeks may have been attributed to the laser therapy. Four recurrences were detected during postpartum follow-up. Condylomata acuminata (CA), or anogenital warts, are typically benign lesions caused by human papillomavirus infection. Although they are rare, immunocompromised individuals are at a higher risk of CA undergoing transformation into invasive anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Two new papillomaviruses, HPV 40 and HPV 57, were isolated from a PIN lesion and an inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus, respectively. Anal warts (condylomata acuminata) from seven homosexual men revealed intraepithelial carcinoma (carcinoma in situ) within the condylomatous tissue or in adjacent anal mucosa.
