Status report on hypertension in Africa--consultative review for the 6th Session of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Health on NCD's.

Hypertension has always been regarded as a disease of affluence but this has changed drastically in the last two decades with average blood pressures now higher in Africa than in Europe and USA and the prevalence increasing among poor sections of society. We have conducted a literature search on PubMed on a broad range of topics regarding hypertension in Africa, including data collection from related documents from World Health Organization and other relevant organizations that are available in this field. We have shared the initial results and drafts with international specialists in the cont

Containment of antimicrobial resistance due to use of antimicrobial agents in animals intended for food: WHO perspective.

The use of antimicrobial agents in humans and food-producing animals has important consequences for human and animal health, as it can lead to the development of resistant bacteria (pathogens and/or commensals with resistance genes). Moreover, resistant bacteria in animals can be transferred to people--usually through the consumption of food, but also through direct contact with food-producing animals or through environmental spread. Ultimately, this can result in human infections with bacteria that are resistant to antimicrobial agents and that can therefore be difficult or impossible to cure

Diabetes and pancreatic cancer. Highlights from the "2011 ASCO Annual Meeting". Chicago, IL, USA; June 3-7, 2011.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer are smoking, family history, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes. There is controversy with regards to the causal relationship between diabetes and pancreatic cancer because many patients with pancreatic cancer have new onset diabetes. Abstracts presented at the 2011 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting highlighted and supported the positive association between pancreatic cancer and diabetes. Abstract #4102 reports a two-fold risk of pancreatic cancer in

A vaccine measured with a highly variable assay: rabies.

Manufacturers and regulators are challenged when evaluating stability of vaccines when potency is measured using a highly variable assay. Participants in the IABS Workshop on Stability Evaluation of Vaccines, a Life Cycle Approach, were offered a case study from a series of stability studies of a rabies vaccine, using the NIH potency assay. The case study was introduced with a scenario in which a new manufacturer was to formulate, lyophilize and fill the vaccine from bulk supplied by another manufacturer. The regulatory authority requested that data from the new manufacturer be supplied, to su

Mastocytosis: an unusual clonal disorder of bone marrow-derived hematopoietic progenitor cells.

Mastocytosis, an unusual disorder of bone marrow-derived, clonally transformed hematopoietic progenitor cells, exhibits a broad spectrum of clinical and morphologic features ranging from a self-limiting benign disorder (ie, juvenile cutaneous mastocytosis) to highly aggressive neoplasms like mast cell leukemia. Principally, mastocytosis should be divided in 2 main subentities: cutaneous mastocytosis and systemic mastocytosis mainly involving the bone marrow. Mastocytosis is a morphologic diagnosis and should not be diagnosed on the basis of clinical findings alone. Pathologists need to be awar

Report of an International Network of Cancer Treatment and Research workshop on non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in developing countries.

The International Network of Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) recently organized a workshop on non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) in selected developing countries with the purpose of examining existing information relating to the pathology and management of these neoplasms, and identifying potential areas for research. This report provides a summary of the information presented and is focused primarily on the pathology of NHLs in children and adults. In most countries, the WHO classification of lymphomas was used and most participating centers included immunohistochemistry using a wide array of

Connective tissue disease related interstitial lung diseases and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: provisional core sets of domains and instruments for use in clinical trials.

RATIONALE: Clinical trial design in interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) has been hampered by lack of consensus on appropriate outcome measures for reliably assessing treatment response. In the setting of connective tissue diseases (CTDs), some measures of ILD disease activity and severity may be confounded by non-pulmonary comorbidities. METHODS: The Connective Tissue Disease associated Interstitial Lung Disease (CTD-ILD) working group of Outcome Measures in Rheumatology-a non-profit international organisation dedicated to consensus methodology in identification of outcome measures-conducted a

The Optic Disc Drusen Studies Consortium Recommendations for Diagnosis of Optic Disc Drusen Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Making an accurate diagnosis of optic disc drusen (ODD) is important as part of the work-up for possible life-threatening optic disc edema. It also is important to follow the slowly progressive visual field defects many patients with ODD experience. The introduction of enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) has improved the visualization of more deeply buried ODD. There is, however, no consensus regarding the diagnosis of ODD using OCT. The purpose of this study was to develop a consensus recommendation for diagnosing ODD using OCT. METHODS: The members of t

Controlled human infections: A report from the controlled human infection models workshop, Leiden University Medical Centre 4-6 May 2016.

The principle of deliberately infecting humans with infectious agents in a controlled setting, so-called controlled human infections (CHI), is not novel. Many CHI models have a long history and were established decades ago such as the intentional exposure to yellow fever and dengue performed in the 1900's (Reed, 1902) [2]. In these times bioethics and scientific reasoning were in their infancy. Nowadays, clinical trials are highly regulated and CHI are executed worldwide. Controlled human malaria infections and influenza infections are the two most frequently practiced. Others are experiencing

Iron deficiency and anemia control for infants and young children in malaria-endemic areas: a call to action and consensus among the research community.

WHO recommendations on iron supplementation for infants and young children in malaria-endemic areas changed dramatically from universal to targeted supplementation for iron-deficient children only, after a trial in a high malaria transmission area showed an increased risk of hospital admission and mortality among iron-replete children following iron and folic acid supplementation. Since this time, there has been much debate and little agreement among the nutrition research community on how to move forward, and country policy and program decision makers have been left with incomplete guidance o

[Biography and bibliography of Francesco Fede, the founder of Italian pediatrics].

For the first time, an overall study of the life and works of Francesco Fede, the founder of Italian pediatrics, has been carried out. Unpublished biographical data was collected and the complete bibliographic works of Fede were presented. Fede is the hallmark of both scientific matter, which reached a climax in the definition of the Riga and Fede illness, and for his disinterested dedication as a Member of Parliament to foster development in didactics, research and assistance for pediatrics.

International Utah cardiac recovery symposium (U-CARS) 2025:translational and basic science proceedings.

The 13th Annual Utah Cardiac Recovery Symposium (U-CARS) brought together experts from around the globe to discuss advances in cardiac research, with an emphasis on the role of adrenergic receptors in heart disease and the use of β-blockers. Presentations highlighted new insights into β-adrenergic signaling, revealing how precise modulation of these pathways could enhance therapeutic outcomes and reduce adverse effects in heart failure (HF). Dr. Michael Bristow offered a comprehensive review of three decades of gene expression studies in the human heart. His talk highlighted how molecular prof

Exploring women representation in major surgical society annual meetings in Italy.

Gender diversity is increasing in medical schools and among physicians, including in surgical residency and among surgeons. However, leadership roles do not appear to be growing proportionately. To assess whether gender equality within the surgical community is improving, we analyzed gender representation in leading roles at two major events within the field in Italy in 2023. Of the 1,566 participants in leadership roles, 199 (12.71%) were women and 1,368 (87.29%) were men. Women consistently made up less than 25% of session invited speakers, with the highest representation in breast (23.5%),
