The etiology of hypertrophic scar contracture: another view.

A new theory of hypertrophic scar contracture is proposed which accounts for many hitherto unexplained clinical and microscopic characteristics. The primary motive force is limb flexion with the mucopolysaccharide "glue" locking the buckled collagen in the contractured position. A different role for the myofibroblast is postulated.

How much preoperative flexion contracture is a predictor for residual flexion contracture after total knee arthroplasty in hemophilic arthropathy and rheumatoid arthritis?

BACKGROUND: Although total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in hemophilic arthropathy (HA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can improve functional ability, the postoperative range of motion (ROM) and prosthesis durability are reduced compared with those in osteoarthritic patients. AIM: We aimed to compare (1) the pre- and postoperative flexion contracture after TKA in HA and RA, (2) the threshold of preoperative flexion contracture as a predictor of residual contracture > 15° after TKA, and (3) the survival rate. METHODS: Data from a consecutive cohort comprising 48 TKAs in HA and 92 TKAs in RA were retr…

Patient-Reported Outcomes After Radiation Therapy for Dupuytren's Contracture.

PURPOSE: Dupuytren's contracture (DC) is a fibroproliferative disorder that can result in functional impairment of the hand. Radiation therapy (RT) is used to prevent disease progression and sometimes as adjuvant therapy after surgeries and recurrences. However, comprehensive data on patient-reported efficacy are limited. This study aimed to assess patient-reported outcomes in patients with DC treated with primary and adjuvant RT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A single-institution retrospective study was conducted, including 22 patients treated with RT for DC between April 2017 and July 2022. Survey…

A Case of Volkmann's Ischemic Contracture - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The Volkmann's ischemic contracture (VIC) of the forearm is a sequel of the compartment syndrome of the forearm. We present a case of VIC treated by the Max page operation with a good functional outcome. CASE REPORT: We report a case of 14-year-old boy with fingers flexion contracture, decreased hand mobility and pain on his left hand. He had a history of left forearm fracture and that was treated by a traditional bonesetter with herbs and cardboards 6 months back. Later he started to have pain and deformity of left hand for which they came to the BGS Global Institute of Medical…

[Bladder neck contracture after surgery for benigne prostate hyperplasia].

Bladder neck contracture (BNC) is a common complication following surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), with incidence rates varying depending on the therapeutic approach. Numerous techniques for managing BNC have been described in the literature. For the initial presentation of BNC, endoscopic treatment is generally recommended as the first-line therapy. In cases of recurrent BNC, however, open surgical reconstruction, such as YV or T-plasty, is considered the preferred treatment option. Additionally, robot-assisted surgery is increasingly being integrated into the surgica…
