Specific action of tranylcypromine to precipitate barbital withdrawal convulsions.

This research was designed to determine whether the convulsion-eliciting action of tranylcypromine (TCP) during bartibal (B) withdrawal was specific to physical dependence on B, and to compare the findings with the action of pentetrazol (PTZ). Challenge with 15-20 mg/kg IP TCP at 48 or B withdrawal resulted in the elicitation of clonic-tonic convulsion (CTC) in all rats (n = 6) within 10 min. Another challenge with 5-20 mg/kg TCP led to the dose-related precipitation and intensification of CTC. The CTC-inducing action of TCP was relatively reduced as the B withdrawal signs were gradually mitig

[Pregnancy termination in convulsive eclampsia using a "prostaglandin-cap"].

Five cases of eclampsia are reported where, since the cervix was immature, pregnancy was terminated with local application of prostaglandin E2 by means of a portio-adapter. Induction-delivery time was short in each instance; in only one patient mild side effects common to prostaglandins were observed. In all five patients operative delivery could be avoided. Shortly after expulsion of the fetus all patients were symptom-free, all post partum courses were uneventful. Three fetuses were already dead before induction of labour, the remaining two weighing 850 g and 1000 g died of respiratory distr

Morphogenesis of cerebellar lesions in bovine familial convulsions and ataxia.

Cerebellar lesions develop in a heritable disorder characterized by recurrent episodic seizures in newborn and young calves and by ataxia in survivors of several bouts of convulsions. Earliest changes were altered patterns of phosphatase reaction products in Purkinje cells. Purkinje cells axons in the outer half of the granular layer developed fusiform or spheroidal argyrophilic swellings. Early lesions were restricted to the lingula and uvula, but cases with more persistent clinical disease involved other parts of the vermis. In ataxic calves these lesions were also in the cerebellar hemisphe

Phenobarbital, primidone and sodium valproate in the prophylaxis of febrile convulsions.

Of 196 children with febrile convulsions, 6.9 were placed on phenobarbital, 4-5 mg/kg/day b.i.d., and 32 on primidone, 15-20 mg/kg/day b.i.d. The remaining 95 children were given sodium valproate; the dosage was 20-25 mg/kg/day b.i.d. in 38 of them, 20-25 mg/kg/day t.i.d. in 24 of them, and 30 mg/kg/day b.i.d. in 33 patients. Recurrence rate of febrile convulsions during one year were not statistically different among these five groups. However, the dosage regimen of valproate of 20-25 mg/kg/day b.i.d. was relatively inferior to the other regimens of valproate in the prophylactic effect. This

[Electroencephalography in epileptic disorders and acute convulsions (author's transl)].

the most important examination of epileptic seizures is the EEG because it is able to reveal interictal changes which indicate pathological processes in neuronal tracts. Diffuse slowing can be seen postical or due to intoxication after both has been excluded in diffuse cortical atrophy. Focal slowing in adults is always suspective of a tumour. -General paroxysmal discharges are frequently characteristical of an epileptic convulsive disorder. Focal spikes do correlate well with the type of seizure. Paroxysmal discharges are primarily indicative of an epileptic disorder-they do, however, occur a

[DPA and clonazepam activity in febrile convulsions: preliminary results].

A pharmacological trial has been performed for the prophylaxis of febrile convulsions in childhood. The administration of two antiepileptic drugs, Sodium Valproate and Clonazepam, reduces significantly seizures occurrence compared with unmedicated controls. Furthermore, Sodium Valproate has been found to be more effective than Clonazepam. Both anticonvulsants are thought to act by a Gabaergic modulation in CNS.

[Use of the Soviet preparation methindione for injections in convulsive conditions].

The author studied the action of a Soviet preparation Metindion in 22 patients with serial epileptic seizures and in 16 patients with an epileptic status. The studies demonstrated a high anticonvulsive activity in serial fits. In epileptical states the action of metindion was less expressed. Its combination with diazepam preparations and barbiturates appeared to have a more expressed and prolonged anticonvulsive action. Metindion is most effective when used at initial stages of a convulsive condition.

[Differential diagnosis of cerebral convulsive seizures in the tetanic syndrome].

An analysis of the types of attacks occurring in tetanus patients shows that epileptic attacks are a relatively frequent occurrence in such patients. In patients under anti-epileptic therapy it is readily possible for the clinical picture to be concealed, and this may then result in irreversible damage due to the disturbance of metabolism remaining uninfluenced. It is recommended that the treatment of patients with cerebral attacks should include measures aimed at preventing the occurrence in them of convulsions resulting from the particular metabolic situation in the case of tetanus. What is

Bone injuries due to tetany or convulsions during hemodialysis.

Two patients with long standing uremia sustained bone injuries due to tetany in one, and convulsions secondary to hemodialysis-induced alkalosis and hypomagnesemia in the other. In the former, there were multiple fractures involving the scapula, clavicles and femoral necks. In the latter, there was a slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Caution should be exercised against tetany or convulsive episodes which may cause bone injuries during hemodiaylsis in severely osteoporotic patients. In patients with progressive renal osteodystrophy, prevention of severe osteopenia by timely kidney transplant o

Neonatal pyridoxine responsive convulsions due to isoniazid therapy.

A 17-day-old infant on isoniazid therapy 13 mg/kg daily from birth because of maternal tuberculosis was admitted after 4 days of clonic fits. No underlying infective or biochemical cause could be found. The fits ceased within 4 hours of administering intramuscular pyridoxine, suggesting an aetiology of pyridoxine deficiency secondary to isoniazid medication.
