Oligodontia and associated characteristics: assessment in view of prosthodontic rehabilitation.

Bibliographic evidence regarding oligodontia was reviewed to extract information necessary for a systematic review for a prosthodontic approach to management. Syndromic oligodontia, appearing as a symptom of many syndromes, was distinguished from isolated, or non-syndromic, which is an independent trait. Although a rare disorder, oligodontia has always been considerably researched, especially concerning its prevalence and genetic background. Non-syndromic oligodontia has been associated with the presence of small and misshapen natural teeth, orofacial clefting and reduced saliva secretion. A t

Prenatal diagnosis of otocephaly using two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasonography.

We report a case of the prenatal diagnosis of a very rare anomaly, namely isolated otocephaly, using two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound at 24 weeks of gestation. Two-dimensional ultrasound revealed polyhydramnios, absence of a stomach shadow, hypotelorism and a proboscis-like mass. Three-dimensional ultrasound gave a precise demonstration of the striking craniofacial features of otocephaly including agnathia, synotia, microstomia and protuberance of the nose-mouth fusion. The use of three-dimensional ultrasound provided a whole view of the very rare lethal malformation in utero a

Neurocranial morphology as determined by asymmetries of the skull base.

The goal of the current study was to provide an easy to use criterion to diagnose neurocranial asymmetries. An anatomical survey of the external aspect of the skull base was planned to correlate with radiological studies. In a sample of 239 skulls, variations of the angular relationship between the structures seen on a basilar view of the cranium were analysed. An anterior and a posterior transverse line were plotted with respect to the midline. Departures from 90 degrees to the midline for either of the transverse lines were less than 5 degrees in normal skulls, between 5 degrees and 7 degree

Assessment and treatment of facial deformity resulting from radiation to the orbital area in childhood.

Children who receive radiation for malignant tumors in the orbital area frequently develop widespread craniofacial deformities. These affect the skull, orbit, maxilla, and mandible. When these patients seek treatment at a later age, they require careful assessment using cephalometrics and three-dimensional imaging. It is recommended that the four levels of skeletal deformity be corrected in a single procedure, that is frontotemporal expansion with repositioning of the skull base area, orbital expansion and repositioning together with maxillary and mandibular surgery. Bone grafts should be inla

Occipital plagiocephaly: deformation or lambdoid synostosis? II. A unifying theory regarding pathogenesis.

Occipital plagiocephaly is characterized by both unilateral occipital flattening and ipsilateral frontal prominence with anterior deviation of the ipsilateral ear, yielding a characteristic parallelogram shape to the cranium. Radiographic changes in the lambdoid suture are often evident, but the lambdoid suture is usually patent over most or all of its length on skull X-rays and/or CT scans. Both lambdoid synostosis and deformational forces have been implicated as potentially causal in the pathogenesis of this deformity. We proposed a unifying theory which incorporates a common pathogenesis fo

A casuistic report on the Gruber or Meckel syndrome.

A case of Meckel or Gruber syndrome is reported, together with a survey of the relevant literature of recent years (1971-1977), in reference to a probably autosomal recessive inheritance of this malformation.

The ribosome biogenesis factor Nol11 is required for optimal rDNA transcription and craniofacial development in Xenopus.

The production of ribosomes is ubiquitous and fundamental to life. As such, it is surprising that defects in ribosome biogenesis underlie a growing number of symptomatically distinct inherited disorders, collectively called ribosomopathies. We previously determined that the nucleolar protein, NOL11, is essential for optimal pre-rRNA transcription and processing in human tissue culture cells. However, the role of NOL11 in the development of a multicellular organism remains unknown. Here, we reveal a critical function for NOL11 in vertebrate ribosome biogenesis and craniofacial development. Nol1

Compensatory defects associated with mutations in Hoxa1 restore normal palatogenesis to Hoxa2 mutants.

The rhombencephalic neural crest play several roles in craniofacial development. They give rise to the cranial sensory ganglia and much of the craniofacial skeleton, and are vital for patterning of the craniofacial muscles. The loss of Hoxa1 or Hoxa2 function affects the development of multiple neural crest-derived structures. To understand how these two genes function together in craniofacial development, an allele was generated that disrupts both of these linked genes. Some of the craniofacial defects observed in the double mutants were additive combinations of those that exist in each of th

Quantifying Normal Craniofacial Form and Baseline Craniofacial Asymmetry in the Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Restoring craniofacial symmetry is an important objective in the treatment of many craniofacial conditions. Normal form has been measured using anthropometry, cephalometry, and photography, yet all of these modalities have drawbacks. In this study, the authors define normal pediatric craniofacial form and craniofacial asymmetry using stereophotogrammetric images, which capture a densely sampled set of points on the form. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, normal, healthy children (n = 533) with no known craniofacial abnormalities were recruited at well-child visit…

Detecting an undiagnosed case of nonsyndromic facial dysmorphism using geometric morphometrics.

The Johns Hopkins University Center for Craniofacial Development and Disorders estimates that 1 in 3,000 children born in the United States is diagnosed with a rare form of craniosynostosis. Although the medical literature has documented numerous descriptions of craniofacial disorders from an anthropometric or genetic perspective, considerably fewer reports of these anomalies have been documented in the context of forensic anthropology. Similar genetic origins of many craniofacial anomalies generate ranges of phenotypic variation between and even within documented cases, producing difficulties
