Severe cyclones and sex-specific birth outcomes in Queensland, Australia: An interrupted time-series analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A male is less adaptable to biological stressors than a female fetus with consequent higher morbidity and mortality. Adverse birth outcomes increase and male livebirths decrease after environmental disasters, economic crises, and terrorist events. We hypothesized the ratio of male to female livebirths would decrease in areas affected by severe tropical cyclones (TCs) in Queensland, Australia. Additionally, in male livebirths, there would be an increase in preterm and low birthweight births. Lastly, we hypothesized that the pregnancy stage at which exposure occurred would modify the

Exposure to Hurricane Sandy and Risk of Opioid Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Given both the increased prevalence of natural disasters in recent years and the crippling opioid epidemic, identifying at-risk groups for substance abuse post-disaster is imperative to survivor mental health. The objective of this study was to examine the association between exposure to Hurricane Sandy and risk of opioid abusive behavior. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from two cross-sectional studies that examined the impact of Hurricane Sandy on mental health from October 2013- August 2016. Patient demographics, hurricane exposure and mental health hi

A Spatial and Temporal Investigation of Medical Surge in Dallas-Fort Worth During Hurricane Harvey, Texas 2017.

OBJECTIVE: When 2017 Hurricane Harvey struck the coastline of Texas on August 25, 2017, it resulted in 88 fatalities and more than US $125 billion in damage to infrastructure. The floods associated with the storm created a toxic mix of chemicals, sewage and other biohazards, and over 6 million cubic meters of garbage in Houston alone. The level of biohazard exposure and injuries from trauma among persons residing in affected areas was widespread and likely contributed to increases in emergency department (ED) visits in Houston and cities receiving hurricane evacuees. We investigated medical su

Increase in Reported Cholera Cases in Haiti Following Hurricane Matthew: An Interrupted Time Series Model.

Matthew, a category 4 hurricane, struck Haiti on October 4, 2016, causing widespread flooding and damage to buildings and crops, and resulted in many deaths. The damage caused by Matthew raised concerns of increased cholera transmission particularly in Sud and Grand'Anse departments, regions which were hit most heavily by the storm. To evaluate the change in reported cholera cases following Hurricane Matthew on reported cholera cases, we used interrupted time series regression models of daily reported cholera cases, controlling for the impact of both rainfall, following a 4-week lag, and seaso

Fumando la piedra: emerging patterns of crack use among Latino immigrant day laborers in New Orleans.

The devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina have contributed to a dynamic demographic shift in the Latino composition of New Orleans. This article focuses on a particularly deleterious pattern of crack cocaine smoking associated with numerous social and health consequences. Utilizing a rapid assessment methodology, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 52 Latino immigrant day laborers in New Orleans. Findings reveal that the presence of a flourishing drug market has facilitated and maintained patterns of crack use including initiation and periods of daily use. Moreover, feelings

Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae from environmental sources associated with the cholera outbreak after 'AILA' cyclone in West Bengal, India.

AIMS: West Bengal experienced a devastating storm named 'AILA' in its coastal and southern districts. We attempted to understand the transmission dynamics emphasizing on potable water to detect the presence of toxigenic strains of Vibrio cholerae, followed by the natural devastation. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 33 water samples (from tap, tube well and ponds) were analysed. From them, 11 (33.3%) samples were found to be contaminated with V. cholerae, among which 5 (45%) isolates were V. cholerae O1 biotype Ogawa. Antibiogram profile reveals that most of the V. cholerae O1 isolates were hi

Increased gender-based violence among women internally displaced in Mississippi 2 years post-Hurricane Katrina.

OBJECTIVES: Although different types of gender-based violence (GBV) have been documented in disaster-affected populations, no studies have documented a quantitative increase in rates of GBV among populations living in protracted displacement after a disaster. We aimed to assess the change in rates of GBV after Hurricane Katrina among internally displaced people (IDPs) living in travel trailer parks in Mississippi. METHODS: The study design included successive cross-sectional randomized surveys, conducted in 2006 and 2007, among IDPs in Mississippi using a structured questionnaire. We sampled

Unveiling the global influence of tropical cyclones on extreme waves approaching coastal areas.

Tropical and extra-tropical storms generate extreme waves, impacting both nearby and remote regions through swell propagation. Despite their devastating effects in tropical areas, the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) to global wave-induced coastal risk remains unknown. Here, we enable a quantitative assessment of TC's role in extreme waves approaching global coastlines, by designing twin oceanic wave simulations with and without realistic TC wind forcing. We find that TCs substantially contribute to extreme breaking heights in tropical regions (35-50% on average), reaching 100% in high-

Enhancing flood prediction through physics-driven typhoon feature engineering and machine learning.

Typhoon-induced extreme floods pose severe threats to subtropical watersheds, yet systematic integration of typhoon physics into machine learning flood prediction remains limited. This study developed a physics-informed machine learning framework for the Boluo watershed, South China, emphasizing typhoon feature engineering. Four models (Linear Regression (LR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest (RF) and XGBoost (XGB)) were systematically evaluated across three feature engineering scenarios: Baseline (conventional hydrometeorological variables), With Typhoon (original typhoon observ

Tropical cyclones and acute coronary syndromes: a Chinese nationwide study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evidence on the associations between tropical cyclone (TC) exposure and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the short-term association between TC exposure and ACS incidence and explore potential effect modifiers. METHODS: This time-stratified case-crossover study included ACS patients from a nationwide registry in mainland China between 2015 and 2022. The Willoughby wind field model was chosen to estimate TC-associated wind speeds, with TC exposure defined as the occurrence of dail

"Many old people taking care of old people": Experiences of older adults after Hurricane María in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rican population has presented demographic changes resulting in a greater proportion of older adults than almost any other country in the world, with an estimated 28% of the total population being over 60 years of age. A key public health issue in Puerto Rico (PR) is older adults' mental health and wellbeing. Located in the Caribbean, PR is prone to natural hazards such as hurricanes, which are a known threat to older adults' overall health and wellbeing. However, the needs of older adults in PR and their mental health have been largely neglected, especially in less visible and marg

Designing and Evaluating a Health System Resilient to Extreme Weather Events in Rural Madagascar.

Background: Adapting health systems for climate change can lessen the negative impact of climate change on human health. Even when not targeting climate-health links explicitly, broad health system strengthening interventions (HSSis) can ensure that the health workforce, infrastructure, and networks are robust enough to respond to and recover from climate-driven shocks. Objective: We explored the ability of an HSSi in a rural health district of southeastern Madagascar to serve as a climate change adaptation in response to Cyclone Batsirai in 2022. Method: We conducted interrupted time series a

Citizen interpreters in crisis response: Social capital, ethical trade-offs, and hybrid quality control in emergency language services-A comparative analysis of volunteer-led practices in COVID-19 pandemic and climate disasters.

This study investigates the dual role of citizen interpreters in addressing emergency language gaps during crises, combining social capital theory and crisis ethics. Through comparative case studies of coronavirus disease 2019 responses in Montreal's multilingual communities and Hurricane Ida relief efforts within Louisiana's Haitian-Cajun networks, this research identifies three core tensions: the paradox of relational proximity, trade-offs between immediacy and accuracy in terminology translation, and challenges in scaling informal volunteer networks. The study introduces a hybrid quality co

History of Health at Cayo Santiago-An Investigation of Environmental and Genetic Influences on the Skeletal Remains of the Introduced Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) Colony.

The Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque colony is a renowned primate population that has experienced significant natural and anthropogenic ecological variation in their 85-year history. Demographic and familial information is also tracked and collated for the majority of monkeys. Thus, the health history of rhesus macaques at Cayo Santiago should reflect the impacts of both environmental and genetic factors. In this study, we utilized a sample of skeletal remains comprised of 2787 individuals (1571 females, 1091 males), born between 1938 and 2017 from the derived skeletal collection of the primate co

Trait-based sensitivity of large mammals to a catastrophic tropical cyclone.

Extreme weather events perturb ecosystems and increasingly threaten biodiversity1. Ecologists emphasize the need to forecast and mitigate the impacts of these events, which requires knowledge of how risk is distributed among species and environments. However, the scale and unpredictability of extreme events complicate risk assessment1-4-especially for large animals (megafauna), which are ecologically important and disproportionately threatened but are wide-ranging and difficult to monitor5. Traits such as body size, dispersal ability and habitat affiliation are hypothesized to determine the vu

Experiencing Trauma During or Before Pregnancy: Qualitative Secondary Analysis After Two Disasters.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existing knowledge about stress, trauma and pregnancy and maternal stress during natural disasters, little is known about what types of trauma pregnant or preconception women experience during these disasters. In May 2016, the worst natural disaster in modern Canadian history required the evacuation of nearly 90,000 residents of the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo (FMWB) area of northern Alberta. Among the thousands of evacuees were an estimated 1850 women who were pregnant or soon to conceive. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated areas of the United States including
