The hepatic injury caused by clofibrate (CF) is strongly associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. This study aims to develop a hypolipidemic compound that possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and reduces liver injury. Carvacrol-clofibrate (CF-Carvacrol) was synthesized by optimizing the structure of CF by carvacrol. CF-Carvacrol showed significant lipid-lowering effects in hyperlipidemic mouse models induced by Triton WR 1339. The molecular docking results showed that CF-Carvacrol has a good affinity for PPAR-α. The liver injury study showed that CF-Carvacrol had signi

Carvacrol has been recognized as an efficient growth inhibitor of food pathogens. However, carvacrol oil is poorly water-soluble and can be oxidized, decomposed or evaporated when exposed to the air, light, or heat. To overcome these limitations, a carvacrol nanoemulsion was developed and its antimicrobial activity against food pathogens evaluated in this study. The nanoemulsion containing 3% carvacrol oil, 9% surfactants (HLB 11) and 88% water, presented good stability over a period of 90 days. In general, the carvacrol nanoemulsion (MIC: 256 µg ml-1 for E. coli and Salmonella spp., 128 µg ml

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by selective loss of dopaminergic neurons that project from the substantia nigra pars compacta to the striatum. Evidence from human and animal studies has suggested that oxidative damage critically contributes to neuronal loss in PD. Carvacrol (CAR), a monoterpenic phenol, is the main constituents in the essential oil of many aromatic plants and possesses some properties including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. In this study, in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed with the CAR in o

Thymol (THY) and carvacrol (CARV), the principal chemical components of thyme oil have long been known for their wide use in medicine due to antimicrobial and disinfectant properties. This study, however, draws attention to a possible synergistic antifungal effect of these monoterpenes with azole antimycotic-fluconazole. Resistance to azoles in Candida albicans involves over-expression of efflux-pump genes MDR1, CDR1, CDR2 or mutations and over-expression of target gene ERG11. The inhibition of drug efflux pumps is considered a feasible strategy to overcome clinical antifungal resistance. To p

The antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of plant essential oils (EOs) have aroused significant interest for their potential as effective alternatives or supplements in combating microbial infections and biofilm-associated challenges. For these applications, EOs must be encapsulated to overcome some key technical limitations, including high volatility, poor stability, and low solubility. This study aimed to develop microencapsulated EOs derived from two valuable Moroccan medicinal plants, Lavandula stoechas L. and Thymus pallidus Batt., both individually and in combination, using the spray

Sheep haemonchosis is a disease that causes serious losses in livestock production, particularly with the increase of cases of anthelmintic resistance around the world. This justifies the urgent need of alternative solutions. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile, in vitro, and, in vivo, anthelmintic properties of Thymus capitatus essential oil. To evaluate the, in vitro, anthelmintic activity of the T. capitatus EO on Haemonchus contortus, two tests were used: egg hatch assay (EHA) and adult worm motility (AWM) assay. The nematicidal effect of this oil was evaluated, in

Xanthorrhizol (XTZ), isolated from Curcuma xanthorrhiza, has potent antifungal and antibacterial activity. It shows very strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus, but is generally not active against Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we explored the possibility of using a combination strategy for expanding the antimicrobial spectrum of XTZ against Gram-negative bacteria. To take advantage of XTZ being a food-grade material, 10 food-grade or generally recognized as safe (GRAS) antimicrobial compounds with low toxicities were sele
