Growth and development of Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura) on salmonid and cyprinid hosts.

The obligate fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni is strictly specific to salmonids and is very rarely found on other fish species. The ability of the parasite to grow and complete its life cycle on a cyprinid host, Rutilus rutilus, was compared with that on a typical salmonid host, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Rearing experiments were run for 42 d with newly hatched metanauplii in flow-through tanks. Body length and sex of the parasites were recorded every 5 d. Growth rates on O. mykiss exceeded those on R. rutilus from the age of 2 wk, at which time the parasites reached a length of about 3.5 mm. Male

Chronic effects of dietary selenium on juvenile Sacramento splittail (Pogonichthys macrolepidotus).

The chronic effects of dietary selenium (Se) exposure in juvenile Sacramento splittail (Pogonichthys macrolepidotus) were investigated in the laboratory. A total of 960 (40 fish per tank, 3 tanks per diet) 7-month-old juvenile splittail were fed one of eight Purified-Casein diets supplemented with selenized yeast for 9 months in a flow-through system. These diets contained the following: 0.4 (control), 0.7, 1.4, 2.7, 6.6, 12.6, 26.0, and 57.6 mg of Se kg(-1) dry weight. Survival, Se tissue concentration, growth, gross morphology, and liver histopathology were assessed at 5- and 9-month of expo

Pfiesteria shumwayae kills fish by micropredation not exotoxin secretion.

Pfiesteria piscicida and P. shumwayae reportedly secrete potent exotoxins thought to cause fish lesion events, acute fish kills and human disease in mid-Atlantic USA estuaries. However, Pfiesteria toxins have never been isolated or characterized. We investigated mechanisms by which P. shumwayae kills fish using three different approaches. Here we show that larval fish bioassays conducted in tissue culture plates fitted with polycarbonate membrane inserts exhibited mortality (100%) only in treatments where fish and dinospores were in physical contact. No mortalities occurred in treatments where

Histamine directly acts on beta-adrenoceptors as well as H1-histaminergic receptors, and causes positive inotropic effects in isolated ventricular muscles of carp heart (Cyprinus carpio).

1. The mechanism for positive and negative inotropic effects of histamine was studied in electrically stimulated ventricular strips of carp heart. 2. A high concentration of histamine (1 mM) caused a transient negative, and subsequent positive inotropic effects. The positive effect was significantly reduced by pyrilamine, diphenhydramine or dl-propranolol, but was not affected by cimetidine or d-propranolol. 3. Prior treatment with reserpine significantly decreased epinephrine and norepinephrine contents in ventricular muscles, and also almost completely abolished the positive inotropic effect

The activation and distribution of GABA and L-glutamate receptors on goldfish Mauthner neurones: an analysis of dendritic remote inhibition.

1. The sensitivity of the membrane of the cell-body and lateral dendrite of the Mauthner neurone to iontophoretically applied GABA and L-glutamic acid has been investigated in goldfish. The cells were afterwards examined histologically. The results, taken together with physiological observations, help to explain some functional properties of dendritic synapses.2. GABA inhibits by increasing the membrane conductance, and has little effect on resting potential. L-Glutamate depolarizes, and its effects could sum with subthreshold excitatory post-synaptic potentials (e.p.s.p.s) to cause impulse fi

Toxicoproteomic analysis reveals arsenic-induced alterations in eye lens proteins of Labeo rohita.

Arsenic occurs extensively in the environment and is classified as a potent carcinogenic substance in humans. Prolonged intake of water contaminated with arsenic results in the development of arsenicosis. In the present study, a toxicoproteomic approach was employed to elucidate arsenic-induced alterations in lens proteins using a fish model. Juveniles of Labeo rohita were exposed to sodium meta-arsenite (NaAsO2) at concentrations of 5, 10, 15, and 20 ppm for a period of 10 days in triplicate experimental groups. Soluble lens proteins were analyzed using one- and two-dimensional gel electropho

First insights into the ectoparasitic helminth fauna of freshwater fish on an Adriatic island.

Surface flow of freshwater on Adriatic islands is rare due to the extreme permeability of the karst terrain. Hence, most helminthological studies of freshwater fishes in the Adriatic drainage have focused on mainland freshwater systems, while data from islands are scarce. We collected minnow, Phoxinus lumaireul (Schinz, 1840), specimens in the Suha Ričina stream on Krk Island and screened them for helminth ectoparasites. Identification of metacercariae cysts (black spots) was carried out by sequencing part of the 28S rDNA gene, and a single monogenean worm was identified by sequencing part of

The monogenean Paradiplozoon ichthyoxanthon behaves like a micropredator on two of its hosts, as indicated by stable isotopes.

The analysis of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen has been used as a fingerprint for understanding the trophic interactions of organisms. Most of these studies have been applied to free-living organisms, while parasites have largely been neglected. Studies dealing with parasites so far have assessed the carbon and nitrogen signatures in endoparasites or ectoparasites of different hosts, without showing general trends concerning the nutritional relationships within host-parasite associations. Moreover, in most cases such systems involved a single host and parasite species. The present stud

Multiscale approach of fish responses to different types of environmental contaminations: a case study.

In order to study the responses of wild fish to environmental contaminations, different sites (two references and three contaminated) were sampled across the Walloon hydrographical network (southern Belgium). The status of fish communities was characterized according to an index of biotic integrity (IBI). Furthermore, population structure, reproductive parameters and biochemical assays were performed on chub (Leuciscus cephalus) as sentinel species. The results showed impaired responses in fish sampled downstream paper mill effluents (BKME), in a polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) contaminated si

Prevalence, potential virulence genes, and antimicrobial resistance of Aeromonas spp. in farm-raised Oreochromis niloticus and Labeo rohita in Noakhali, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas species are ubiquitous aquatic bacteria and opportunistic pathogens associated with motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in freshwater fish. MAS is characterized by hemorrhagic lesions and septicemia and can cause severe economic losses in aquaculture. The increasing occurrence of antimicrobial-resistant Aeromonas strains has raised concerns for fish health, aquaculture sustainability, and public health. AIM: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, species distribution, virulence gene profiles, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Aeromonas spp. isolated from farm

Occurrence and potential ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs (PhIDs) in the Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System (SSVES), Brazil.

Despite the substantial amount of research on the presence of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs (PhIDs) in freshwater environments, there is a paucity of data on these contaminants in estuarine systems, particularly in South America. Industries, the biggest port in the Southern Hemisphere, and substantial urban areas surround the Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System (SSVES), located in a Brazilian subtropical area. This study constitutes the first assessment of contamination by PhIDs in this estuarine area. Samples of superficial water, sediments, and oysters were analyzed through liquid chroma

Resveratrol alleviates lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury by inducing SIRT1/P62-mediated mitophagy in gibel carp (Carassius gibelio).

INTRODUCTION: Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenol organic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine whether and how RES can alleviate liver injury in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced gibel carp. METHODS: Gibel carp were fed a diet with or without RES and were cultured for 8 weeks, followed by LPS injection. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results suggested that RES attenuated the resulting oxidative stress and inflammation by activating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, as confirmed by changes in oxidative stress, inflammation-

Characterization and immune function of the interferon-β promoter stimulator-1 in the barbel chub, Squaliobarbus curriculus.

To elucidate the immunity-protecting role of the interferon-β promoter stimulator-1 (ScIPS-1) in barbel chub Squaliobarbus curriculus, the full-length cDNA of ScIPS-1 was cloned and expression levels in response to stimulation were investigated. In addition, the function of ScIPS-1 and its domains were analyzed. The full-length cDNA of ScIPS-1 is 2524 bp and encodes 601 aa. The N-terminal caspase activation and recruitment domain, central proline-rich domain, C-terminal transmembrane domain, C2HC-zinc finger, and Cwf21 domains were identified. The mRNA level of ScIPS-1 was the highest in the k

Time-course study of the protection induced by an interferon-inducible DNA vaccine against viral haemorrhagic septicaemia in rainbow trout.

The highly effective DNA vaccines against diseases caused by fish rhabdoviruses in farmed fish consist of a DNA plasmid vector encoding the viral glycoprotein under the control of a constitutive cytomegalovirus promoter (CMV). Among others, attempts to improve efficacy and safety of these DNA vaccines have focused on regulatory elements of plasmid vectors, which play a major role in controlling expression levels of vaccine antigens. Depending on the context, use of a fish-derived promoter with minimal activity in mammalian cells could be preferable. Another aspect related to the CMV promoter i

InP/ZnS QDs exposure induces developmental toxicity in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) embryos.

We investigated the in vivo toxicity of InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in Chinese rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) embryos. The 72 h post-fertilization (hpf) LC50 (median lethal concentration) was 1678.007 nmol/L. Rare minnows exposed to InP/ZnS QDs exhibited decreased spontaneous movement, decreased survival and hatchability rates, and an increased malformation rate. Pericardial edema, spinal curvature, bent tails and vitelline cysts were observed. Embryonic Wnt8a and Mstn mRNA levels were significantly up-regulated after InP/ZnS QDs treatment at 48 hpf (200 nmol/L) (p < 0.05). The superoxide dism

Molecular detection of a putatively novel cyprinid herpesvirus in sichel (Pelecus cultratus) during a mass mortality event in Hungary.

In the early summer of 2014, mass mortality of sichel (Pelecus cultratus) was observed in Lake Balaton, Hungary. Histological examination revealed degenerative changes within the tubular epithelium, mainly in the distal tubules and collecting ducts in the kidneys and multifocal vacuolisation in the brain stem and cerebellum. Routine molecular investigations showed the presence of the DNA of an unknown alloherpesvirus in some specimens. Subsequently, three genes of the putative herpesviral genome (DNA polymerase, terminase, and helicase) were amplified and partially sequenced. A phylogenetic tr
