A 7-year-old male Caucasian shepherd presented with a 3 month history of intermittent hematuria, penile discharge, and abdominal pain and distension. The dog had a history of prostatic hyperplasia with multiple cysts, diagnosed by the referring clinician two years prior to the case presentation. Two oral courses of antibiotics and antiandrogens were administered by the treating veterinarian without resolution. At the case presentation visit, massive swelling was present in the mid- and caudal parts of the abdomen. Abdominal ultrasound and exploratory laparotomy revealed a paraprostatic cyst (s

Swine cysticercosis is very common in the developing countries where pigs are raised. Undercooked measly pork consumption leads to taeniasis; Taenia carriers act as source of human and swine cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis. Diagnosis of swine cysticercosis is important to break the cycle of disease transmission. The present study compared the neck muscle, tongue and eye examinations, and serum ELISA with different preparations (crude lysate, cyst fluid, scolex and cyst wall antigens) of Taenia solium cyst for the diagnosis of swine cysticercosis. Total of 24 pigs initially identified by n…

One spayed female Labrador retriever and two castrated male golden retrievers were evaluated for chronic (i.e., ranging from 3 wk to 24 wk) neurologic signs localizable to the prosencephalon. Signs included seizures, circling, and behavior changes. MRI demonstrated extra-axial, contrast-enhancing, multiloculated, fluid-filled, cyst-like lesions with a mass effect, causing compression and displacement of brain parenchyma. Differential diagnoses included cystic neoplasm, abscess or other infectious cyst (e.g., alveolar hydatid cyst), or fluid-filled anomaly (e.g., arachnoid cyst). The cyst-like

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic cysts, commonly discovered incidentally, can become symptomatic due to complications like infection, rupture, or mass effect. Traditional management options include percutaneous drainage, open surgical or laparoscopic deroofing, and liver resection. We present a case series of 3 patients with complex fluid collections in the liver managed by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage using lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) placement. While reports exist from other countries, our study contributes a series of cases from the USA.
CASE PRESENTATION: Three patients, average

Subchondral bone cyst, intraarticular synovial cyst, and osteochondritis dissecans arising together are analyzed: this association has so far not been reported. If we accept the theory of a mechanical origin for subchondral bone cysts (leakage of joint fluid or intrusion of the synovial membrane through a breach in the cartilage), then the osteochondritis certainly provided the port of entry that allowed formation of the intraosseous synovial cyst in this patient.

We present the first known case of cyst fluid localized to an articular branch without involvement of the larger parent nerve. During a routine tarsal tunnel decompression in a patient with fluctuating plantar foot symptoms and "normal" magnetic resonance imaging findings, we identified cyst fluid within an articular branch of the lateral plantar nerve to the subtalar joint. Our incidental intraoperative discovery was corroborated by retrospective review of the magnetic resonance images. Although we do not know whether this cyst was responsible for the patient's complaints, we believe this fin…

The case of a 55-year-old immunocompetent woman with central nervous system cryptococcosis and multiple intraventricular cysts is presented. The cysts did not enhance on MR and had signal characteristics similar to cerebrospinal fluid on T1- and T2-weighted images; their intensity was lower than cerebrospinal fluid on proton density-weighted images.

Fluid-fluid levels in bone tumors have been described in aneurysmal bone cysts and other cystic tumors of bones and soft tissue tumors. We experienced three bone tumors (simple bone cyst, bone metastasis, and osteosarcoma) and three soft tissue tumors (fibrosarcoma, two cases of cavernous hemangioma) that showed fluid-fluid levels on MR, and investigated their cause. Causes included blood in the cystic spaces, hemorrhage in the tumor, the telangiectatic component of the osteosarcoma, and the cavernous component of the hemangioma. No specific diagnosis could be made based on the finding of flui

Fetal ovarian cysts are the most common abdominal cysts observed in the female fetus but may be mistaken for genitourinary cysts, gastrointestinal cysts, lymphangiomas, or fetus in fetu. Ultrasonography (US) is the imaging modality of choice for fetal assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging is a useful problem-solving tool when uncertainty remains after careful US evaluation. At US, a fetal ovarian cyst manifests as an anechoic thin-walled cyst superior and parasagittal to the bladder. A daughter cyst may occasionally be observed and is pathognomonic for a cyst of ovarian origin. Fetal ovar

The authors report the case of a 15-year-old girl with a third ventricle colloid cyst. She presented with prolonged headache, nausea, vomiting, and loss of visual acuity with bilateral papilledema. Computed tomography and MRI revealed severe biventricular hydrocephalus with transependymal periventricular fluid and a minimally enhancing cystic mass of the third ventricle. The patient was diagnosed with a colloid cyst and obstructive hydrocephalus, and endoscopic resection with ablation of the cyst remnant was performed. While attempting to extricate the cyst from the patient's head, control of

Arachnoid cysts are collection of cerebrospinal fluid contained inside a cavity lined by leptomeninges. It constitutes 1% of all intracranial tumours mostly present in the middle cranial fossa. Retrobulbar arachnoid cyst in elderly persons are a rare occurrence. We report a rare case of retrobulbar arachnoid cyst with ophthalmic manifestations and its effective management. CT-guided aspiration of the cyst and subsequent cytological and biochemical test revealed an arachnoid cyst. Patient is on a 5-year follow up without recurrence and improvement of the vision in the affected eye.

Epithelial cysts are benign epithelium-lined lesions that contain fluid or semisolid material. This type of cyst is rare in the oral cavity. Most epithelial cysts in this location are situated in the anterior floor of the mouth; the soft palate is seldom affected. Oral examination in a 6-year-old boy revealed a cyst in the soft palate. The lesion was excised under general anesthesia, and histopathological examination identified it as an epithelial cyst. The report discusses this rare location for an epithelial cyst and reviews the pertinent literature.

A mid-abdominal mass was discovered during routine physical examination of a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). Further diagnostics and exploratory laparotomy were performed, revealing a fluid-filled cyst attached to the caudal free margin of the greater omentum. Formation and pulsatile movement of white-colored circumferential bands within the wall of the cyst were observed during surgery. The cyst was removed and later was dissected. The discovery of a single invaginated scolex identified the cyst as a cysticercus. The location and characteristics of the cysticercus were consistent with the la

A large supratentorial tumor associated with an extraparenchymatous cyst and multiloculated intraparenchymatous cysts occurred in a 14-month-old infant. This case had all the characteristic features of desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma both clinically and histologically. The notable difference was the extraparenchymatous cyst. The extraparenchymatous cyst was probably caused by entrapment of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space by some check-valve mechanism because the leptomeninges were commonly involved in the tumor. A similar mechanism may explain the etiology of the intraparenc

The sodium (Na) and potassium (K) concentrations were measured in the fluid of 169 breast cysts aspirated from 101 consecutive patients presenting to a single clinic. The Na/K ratio was used to define cysts as either apocrine (Na/K less than 3) or flattened (Na/K less than 3) in type. There was no consistency in the type of cyst for individual patients. Cyst type was not predictive of further cyst development, neither was a particular cyst type associated with the development of, or a history of, breast cancer.

A porencephalic cyst is an aberrant accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain parenchyma. Its occurrence is rare, with an incidence of 3.5 per 100,000 live births. Etiology is considered the result of perinatal cerebral ischemia or hemorrhage, leading to parenchymal loss. Porencephalic cysts are diagnosed radiologically, and management depends on the clinical manifestation. Our case depicts a porencephalic cyst presenting with nondominant parietal lobe symptoms in adulthood. We hypothesize that a membrane between the cyst and ventricle allowed formation of a 1-way valve that led to

We present a case exhibiting persistent joint effusion and formation of a gigantic popliteal synovial cyst 8 years after total knee joint arthroplasty. Assessment using flow cytometry revealed that both joint and cyst fluid contained abundant macrophage-phagocytosing wear particles. This finding indicates that wear particles participated in formation of the cyst through the communication between the joint cavity and cyst. Intraoperatively, prominent villous synovial proliferation was observed in both the joint and cyst, and delamination failure of the polyethylene insert was identified. Becaus…
