Erabutoxin a was partially hydrolysed with enzymes and sulphuric acid and the resulting peptides were separated from each other by column chromatography and paper electrophoresis. From the results of amino acid analyses of the sulphur-containing peptides and their oxidized components, all four disulphide bridges in the toxin molecule were located. The disulphide bonds were found between half-cystine residues at positions 3 and 24, 17 and 41, 43 and 54, and 55 and 60 from the N-terminus.

The solution structure of an insecticidal toxin LaIT1, a 36-residue peptide with a unique amino-acid sequence and two disulfide bonds, isolated from the venom of the scorpion Liocheles australasiae was determined by heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy. Structural similarity search showed that LaIT1 exhibits an inhibitory cystine knot (ICK)-like fold, which usually contains three or more disulfide bonds. Mutational analysis has revealed that two Arg residues of LaIT1, Arg(13) and Arg(15), play significant roles in insecticidal activity.

Asymptomatic urolithiasis is common and of mixed composition in patients with β-thalassaemia major. Twenty-seven subjects were imaged using dual-energy computer tomography to determine the presence and composition of urolithiasis. The prevalence of urolithiasis was 59% and affected patients generally had multiple stones, often with more than one component: struvite (33%), calcium oxalate (31%) and cystine (22%). Hypercalciuria was present in 78% of subjects and calcium-containing urolithiasis was associated with reduced femoral neck Z scores.

Specimens of a cornea, conjunctiva and iris were removed at the time of penetrating keratoplasty in a case of nephropathic cystinosis. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the presence of class II antigens on the stromal keratocytes of the cornea and the vascular endothelial cells, pericytes and fibroblasts of the conjunctiva. In addition, there were thinning and focal breaks in Bowman's membrane. Both of these findings may have contributed to the severe photophobia and blepharospasm seen in patients with longstanding cystinosis.
