A Systematic Review of Surgical interventions for the Treatment of Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis.

CONTEXT: Bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) is a poorly understood chronic debilitating condition. Surgery is reserved for severe refractory cases; however, there is no consensus on patient selection or optimal approach. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the evidence relating to the safety and efficacy of surgical interventions for treating BPS/IC. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for original studies, using keywords "cystectomy", "interstitial cystitis", and "bladder pain syndrome". Articles were reviewed and screened by three independent reviewers. EV

Clinical manifestations and results of cystoscopy in women with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) refers to diseases that are challenging to identify, diagnose and treat. Thus, there is a need to study the clinical and cystoscopic picture of IC/BPS. The present research aims to study the clinical manifestations and results of cystoscopy with hydrodistension in women with IC/BPS. METHODS: One hundred twenty-six women with clinically diagnosed IC/BPS were examined - their mean age was 46.7±14.0 years. Patients were surveyed on pelvic pain and urgency/frequency patient symptom score (PUF), visual analogue scale (VAS) and urgency

Metabolomic and lipidomic approaches to identify biomarkers for bladder cancer and interstitial cystitis (Review).

The discovery, introduction and clinical use of prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers has significantly improved outcomes for patients with various illnesses, including bladder cancer (BC) and other bladder‑related diseases, such as benign bladder dysfunction and interstitial cystitis (IC). Several sensitive and noninvasive clinically relevant biomarkers for BC and IC have been identified. Metabolomic‑ and lipidomic‑based biomarkers have notable clinical potential in improving treatment outcomes for patients with cancer; however, there are also some noted limitations. This review article provid

A new look at the etiology of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: extraordinary cultivations.

PURPOSE: So far, studies have not clearly identified infectious agents as an etiological factor for interstitial cystitis (IC). Specific microbiological diagnosis for detecting the pathogen with higher sensitivity in IC may decrease the treatment costs and increase psychosocial health of the patients. METHODS: A prospective clinical study was performed in 26 IC patients and 20 controls between April and September 2017. All participants were asked to give mid-stream urine sample for routine urine cultures. Followed by the negative results, symptomatic 26 patients were evaluated for L-form path

Verification of mesenchymal stem cell injection therapy for interstitial cystitis in a rat model.

OBJECTIVE: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic intractable disease. Recently, the potential application of stem cell (SC) therapy was suggested for IC management. This study aimed to establish an optimal SC source and verify the efficacy and safety of SC injection therapy in an IC rat model. DESIGN: After IC animal model induction, urine-derived stem cells (USCs), adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs), bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) and amniotic fluid-derived stem cells (AFSCs) were injected into the bladder submucosa. The following parameters were analysed: 1) functional impr

Menthol, a unique urinary volatile compound, is associated with chronic inflammation in interstitial cystitis.

Chronic inflammation is a potential systemic risk factor for many bladder dysfunctions, including interstitial cystitis (IC). However, the underlying mechanism through which a healthy bladder protects itself from inflammatory triggers remains unknown. In this study, we identified odor compounds in urine obtained from IC patients and healthy controls. Using comprehensive solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-TOF-MS) profiling and bioinformatics, we found that levels of urinary volatile metabolites, such as menthol, were significantly reduced in

Differential perturbation of the interstitial cystitis-associated genes of bladder and urethra in rat model.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic bladder dysfunction characterized as urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, and pelvic pain. The changes in urethra may wind up with the bladder changes in structure and functions, however, the functions of the urethra in IC remains elusive. The aim of this study was to understand the perturbed gene expression in urethra, compared with urinary bladder, associated with the defected urodynamics. Using female IC mimic rats, a comprehensive RNA-sequencing combined with a bioinformatics analysis was performed and revealed that IC-specific genes in bladder or u

Complementary and alternative medical therapies for interstitial cystitis: an update from the United States.

The diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) has shifted from organ-specific to a multifactorial, multidisciplinary and individualized approach. Patients with refractory and debilitating symptoms may respond to complementary and alternative medical treatments (CAM). Through CAM therapies, practitioners assist the patient to be at the center of their care, empowering them to be emotionally and physically involved. Multi-disciplinary care, including urology, gynecology, gastroenterology, neurology, psychology, physiotherapy and pain medicine, is also identi

Examination of the significant placebo effect in the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the significant "placebo effect" in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome trial. Randomized clinical trials are the reference standard for therapeutic impact assessment. However, proving efficacy of treatments for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome with rigorous placebo-controlled trials is difficult due to a significant effect of the placebo intervention. METHODS: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome patients were randomized to receive subcutaneous adalimumab or subcutaneous placebo every 2 weeks for 1

The combination therapy of prednisolone and tacrolimus for severe painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis.

A 47-year-old woman visited our hospital with complaints of frequent urination and intensive pelvic pain. Painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC) was suspected based on her symptoms. Hydrodistention was performed, and crack and petechial hemorrhage were found, and she was treated with tricyclic antidepressants and antihistamine. However, these treatments were ineffective. An allergy or autoimmune reaction was suspected as the pathogenesis due to eosinophilia and elevation of serum IgE levels. The patient was then treated with immunosuppressive agents. Although her symptoms were
