Cognitive scientists have long debated the capabilities of non-conscious perception, defined as the level of processing of external stimuli that people do not consciously experience. While much is known about non-conscious visual perception, the auditory modality has received less focus. Here, we examine the level of processing for audible and intelligible spoken words that participants did not notice while performing another difficult visual task. Using repeated occurrences of such inattentional deafness and awareness probes, we measure the non-conscious processing of undetected words. In two…

The function of the cerebral cortex essentially depends on the ability to form functional assemblies across different cortical areas serving different functions. Here we investigated how developmental hearing experience affects functional and effective interareal connectivity in the auditory cortex in an animal model with years-long and complete auditory deprivation (deafness) from birth, the congenitally deaf cat (CDC). Using intracortical multielectrode arrays, neuronal activity of adult hearing controls and CDCs was registered in the primary auditory cortex and the secondary posterior audit…

Several studies have been carried out to verify neural plasticity and the language process in deaf individuals. However, further investigations regarding the intrinsic brain organization on functional and structural neural networks derived from congenital deafness are still an open question. The objective of this study was to investigate the main differences in brain organization manifested in congenitally deaf individuals, concerning the resting-state functional patterns, and white matter structuring. Functional and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging modalities were acquired from 18 congeni…

Single sided deafness diminishes speech understanding in noise and sound localization and thereby globally auditory performance. Most patients also suffer from tinnitus and indicate reduced quality of life. Patients have the choice to adapt to the new situation without treatment, to restore pseudostereophonic hearing by contralateral routing of signal (CROS) hearing aids or to restore binaural hearing using a cochlear implant in the deaf ear. This article summarizes the physiological base of binaural hearing and treatment options for single sided deafness with a special emphasis on the cochlea…

Aminoglycoside antibiotics can cause irreversible hearing loss, but they are still widely used because of their low production cost and broad-spectrum effect on most infections. Although it has been studied for decades, the mechanism of aminoglycoside-induced deafness has not been fully elucidated. Since patients'individual susceptibility to aminoglycoside-ototoxicity varies considerably, it is necessary to identify high-risk patients. This review summarizes the genetic mutations linked to aminoglycoside-induced deafness, in order to provide reference for further prevention and treatment of am…

The human brain is highly cross-modal, and sensory information may affect a wide range of behaviors. In particular, there is evidence that auditory functions are implicated in oculomotor behaviors. Considering this apparent auditory-oculomotor link, one might wonder how the loss of auditory input from birth might have an influence on these motor behaviors. Eye movement tracking enables to extract several components, including saccades and smooth pursuit. One study suggested that deafness can alter saccades processing. Oculomotor behaviors have not been examined further in the deaf. The main go…

BACKGROUND: The TBX1 gene encodes the T-box 1 protein that is a transcription factor involved in development. Haploinsufficiency of the TBX1 gene is reported to cause features similar to DiGeorge syndrome. The TBX1 gene is located within the DiGeorge syndrome region, and studies support that the TBX1gene is responsible for most of the features of the phenotype of hemizygous deletion of chromosome 22q11.2. In this study, we report a family of 4 (a father with 3 children) who presented with congenital hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia, facial asymmetry, deafness, normal intelligence, and no ca…

OBJECTIVES: Sodium bromate is a strong oxidant, and bromate intoxication can cause irreversible severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. This paper reports the first case in the English literature of bromate-induced hearing loss with hearing recovery measured by formal audiological assessment.Case reportA 72-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with complaints of profound hearing loss, nausea, diarrhoea and anuria after bromate ingestion in a suicide attempt. On admission, pure tone audiometry and auditory brainstem responses showed profound bilateral deafness. Under the diagnosis of …

Dietary supplements consisting of beta-carotene (precursor to vitamin A), vitamins C and E and the mineral magnesium (ACEMg) can be beneficial for reducing hearing loss due to aminoglycosides and overstimulation. This regimen also slowed progression of deafness for a boy with GJB2 (CONNEXIN 26) mutations. To assess the potential for treating GJB2 and other forms of hereditary hearing loss with ACEMg, we tested the influence of ACEMg on the cochlea and hearing of mouse models for two human mutations: GJB2, the leading cause of childhood deafness, and DIAPH3, a cause of auditory neuropathy. One …

BACKGROUND: Good outcomes have been reported regarding the use of cochlear implants for mumps deafness. The mumps virus induces meningitis and/or encephalitis, which can cause central nervous system damage resulting in retrolabyrinthine hearing loss, for which a cochlear implant would be less effective.
CASES: We installed a cochlear implant in two patients with bilateral mumps deafness; one achieved a good result with the cochlear implant, but the other did not. We discuss two possible reasons for the different outcomes. Case 1 was a three-year-old girl with bilateral parotid swelling, vomit…

Three unrelated children from ethnically diverse backgrounds who were treated for acute leukaemia became profoundly and irreversibly deaf during treatment. Aminoglycoside levels were within the therapeutic range. Genetic testing showed all three to have a maternally inherited mutation of mitochondrial DNA, m.1555A>G, known to cause sensitivity to the ototoxic effects of aminoglycosides. One child has received a cochlear implant, and another will be implanted shortly. Children diagnosed with acute leukaemia should be tested for this mutation at diagnosis, and alternative antibiotics chosen for

BACKGROUND: Five children from two consanguineous families presented with epilepsy beginning in infancy and severe ataxia, moderate sensorineural deafness, and a renal salt-losing tubulopathy with normotensive hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. We investigated the genetic basis of this autosomal recessive disease, which we call the EAST syndrome (the presence of epilepsy, ataxia, sensorineural deafness, and tubulopathy).
METHODS: Whole-genome linkage analysis was performed in the four affected children in one of the families. Newly identified mutations in a potassium-channel gene were evaluated…

A 26-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital with generalized hyperkeratosis associated with keratitis and a hearing defect. The patient was born from nonconsanguineous parents. Her skin was moderately hyperkeratotic at birth. During childhood, the thickness of the skin increased progressively. Bilateral sensorineural deafness was recognized at the age of 3 years. Visual disturbance was noted in later childhood, and corneal transplantations to the right eye were performed twice at the age of 16 and 25 years, but did not improve her visual acuity. There was no family history of sim…

In 1934 Morgan and Baumgartner first described a nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis (IK) associated with vestibuloauditory dysfunction (Morgan RF, Baumgartner CF, Menier's disease complicated by recurrent interstitial keratitis. Excellent result following cervial ganglionectomy. West J Surg 1934;42:628). Cogan was the first to describe this syndrome as a clinical entity with the report of 5 additional cases in 1945 (Cogan DA: Syndrome of nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and vestibuloauditory symptoms. Arch Ophthalmol 1945;33:144-9). Since that time, more than 100 cases of Cogan's syndrom
