Two techniques for surgical treatment of Menière's disease, endolymphatic sac decompression according to Shambough and decompression on the stapes footplate, i. e., platino decompression according to Martin, were compared. A series of 81 patients were hospitalized for treatment, and 20 surgical procedures were performed: platino decompression in eight cases, and endolymphatic sac decompression in 12. None of the eight patients had relapse of the disease after platino decompression, whereas the endolymphatic sac operation was followed by relapse in 6 of the 12 patients. Considering the postoper

Orbital decompression surgery and medical therapy for thyroid eye disease (TED) have evolved over the past 150 years and afforded the opportunity to restore pre-disease appearance and visual function. This manuscript explores the past 150 years of surgical innovation for the treatment of TED. The "Age of Surgical Heroism" spans the time from 1888 to 1979 during which the pioneers of orbital decompression developed lateral orbitotomy, transcranial decompression, paranasal sinus decompression, and transantral decompression despite an incomplete understanding of the pathophysiology of both TED an

Facial nerve decompression is a surgical procedure performed for severe facial nerve paralysis associated with conditions such as Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Classical Western studies by Fisch first established the surgical principles of facial nerve decompression, providing the foundation for subsequent work on decompression extent and outcomes. However, the optimal extent of bony decompression of the facial nerve canal remains unclear, and a 180° removal of the surrounding bone has traditionally been performed based on empirical judgment. Nevertheless, more extensive bone removal

STUDY DESIGN: A subanalysis study.
OBJECTIVE: To compare surgical outcomes and complications of multilevel decompression and single-level fusion with multilevel decompression and multilevel fusion for patients with multilevel lumbar stenosis and single-level degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In patients with DS who are treated surgically, decompression and fusion provide a better clinical outcome than decompression alone. Surgical treatment for multilevel lumbar stenosis and DS typically includes decompression and fusion of the spondylolisthesis segment and dec

BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction, characterized by the impaired transit of intestinal contents due to various etiologies, constitutes a prevalent surgical emergency. In certain cases, surgical intervention becomes imperative, wherein intraoperative intestinal decompression is frequently necessitated. Ensuring effective decompression while minimizing contamination of the operative field constitutes a pivotal step that exerts a direct influence on postoperative outcomes.
AIM: To assess the clinical efficacy of cannula-assisted decompression techniques employed during intraoperative intestinal

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is hallmarked by spinal canal narrowing and related cord compression and myelopathy. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure dynamics are likely disturbed due to spinal canal stenosis. The study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of continuous intraoperative CSF pressure monitoring during surgical decompression. This prospective single center study (NCT02170155) enrolled DCM patients who underwent surgical decompression between December 2019 and May 2021. Data from n = 17 patients were analyzed and symptom severity graded with the modified Japanese Orth

Surgical decompression of the orbit may be necessary in dysthyroid patients with compressive optic neuropathy. Two-wall decompression with a trans-antral or a trans-conjunctival approach is commonly used. However, in some patients the initial improvement following this surgical procedure is not maintained. Although this may be due to disease progression, a variant of orbital anatomy can contribute to sub-optimal decompression. We report three cases in which recurrence of compressive optic neuropathy occurred following two-wall decompression. The sphenoidal sinus was placed anteriorly in these

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal canal stenosis is frequently found among elderly patients and significantly limits their quality of life. Non-surgical therapy is an initial treatment option; however, it does not eliminate the underlying pathology. Surgical decompression of the spinal canal has now become the treatment of choice.
OBJECTIVE: Minimalization of surgical approach strategies with maintaining sufficient decompression of the spinal canal and avoiding disadvantages of macrosurgical techniques, monolateral paravertebral approach with bilateral intraspinal decompression, specific surgical tec

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic amyotrophy (CSA) is not common. The clinical features and long-term surgical outcomes of patients with CSA are also unclear. We sought to summarize clinical features, assess long-term surgical outcomes, and determine the prognostic factors relevant for patients with CSA.
METHODS: A total of 136 patients with CSA who underwent anterior or posterior decompression during January 2001 to December 2012 were included. Their clinical and radiologic data were collected. The surgical outcome was evaluated using manual muscle test and improvements in the muscle strength

This year, 1981, is the 50th anniversary of facial nerve decompression for Bell's palsy. The procedure was first suggested in 1923 but not performed until 1931. From the start, facial nerve decompression has generated disagreement regarding the indication and timing for surgical treatment and the anatomic extent of decompression. In each decade as the postonset time within which to perform surgical intervention has decreased, the anatomic extent of decompression has increased. Otologists continue to disagree, and we need to reevaluate our past and analyze how the difference may be resolved in

PURPOSE: Simple decompression and anterior subcutaneous transposition are effective surgical interventions for cubital tunnel syndrome and yield similarly favorable outcomes. However, a substantial proportion of patients demonstrate unsatisfactory outcomes for reasons that remain unclear. We compared effects of decompression and transposition on regional ulnar nerve strain to better understand the biomechanical impacts of each strategy.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with cubital tunnel syndrome and scheduled for anterior subcutaneous transposition surgery were enrolled. Simple decompression, ci

The study aimed to determine how much change in neurogenic claudication spinal surgeons expect in patients following lumbar decompression for lumbar spine stenosis (LSS), and radicular leg pain following microdiscectomy. Secondary aims were to identify surgeons' preferences regarding surgical techniques for lumbar decompression, and their rating of the quality of current evidence for lumbar decompression. All Australian spine surgeons were invited, of whom 71 completed the survey (31% response rate). Only registered spinal surgeons were included. The online survey, administered using REDCap, i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The concept of 'time is spine' emphasizes early or ultra-early surgical decompression within 24 or 12 h, respectively, after spinal cord injury (SCI) to maximize recovery. This review updates the latest findings on the timing of surgical decompression and hemodynamic management in acute SCI, focusing on neurological outcomes and complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: While early decompression may improve neurological outcomes, factors like injury severity, comorbidities, and system resources affect surgical timing. Recent studies question the benefits of ultra-early decompression,

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the preferred option for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) when conservative methods cannot meet the needs. Recent advancements in surgical techniques have brought various new methods for treating LSS.
METHODS: Four databases, PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, were searched, covering the period from the establishment of the databases until May 2024. Randomized controlled trials were carried out to treat LSS using different surgical approaches. The outcome measures included the visual analog scale (VAS) score, Oswestry disability index score, surgical

Despite increased life expectancy due to health care quality improvements globally, pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO) treatment with a spinal epidural abscess (SEA) remains challenging in patients older than 80 years. We aimed to assess octogenarians for PVO prevalence with SEA and compare after-surgery clinical outcomes of decompression and decompression and instrumentation. A retrospective review of electronic medical records at a single institution was conducted between September 2005 and December 2020. Patient demographics, surgical characteristics, complications, hospital course, and

BACKGROUND: The main treatment for the symptoms of proptosis and optic nerve compression caused by thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy is orbital decompression surgery. Medial inferior wall decompression and balanced decompression are two frequently used surgical procedures. However, there is no unified consensus on how to choose different surgical options for orbital decompression in clinical practice.
AIMS: To compare the effects of medial inferior wall decompression and balanced decompression surgery through meta-analysis and to provide reference for clinical optimal decision making.
