PREVALENCE OF PARELAPHOSTRONGYLUS ANDERSONI IN WHITE-TAILED DEER, OTHER CERVIDS, AND BOVIDS IN NORTHERN FLORIDA.

Parelaphostrongylus andersoni, the muscleworm, commonly infects white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and also infects caribou (Rangifer tarandus [R.t.] groenlanicus, R.t. grantii, R.t. tarandus, and R.t. caribou). Heavy infection with P. andersoni leads to weakness in the hindquarters, abnormal gait, and pulmonary lesions. The geographical range and full host spectrum of this parasite are not fully known. This study aims to understand host specificity better, especially in nonnative cervids and bovids. This study involved the collection of 140 fecal samples from native and nonnative cerv…

Infections with Bartonella spp. in free-ranging cervids and deer keds (Lipoptena cervi) in Norway.

Bartonella bacteria are arthropod-borne and can cause long-term bacteremia in humans and animals. The predominant arthropod vectors and the mode of transmission for many novel Bartonella species remain elusive or essentially unstudied. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Bartonella spp. in Norwegian cervids and deer keds (Lipoptena cervi) and to characterise the bacteria by sequencing of the partial gltA gene and 16 S-23 S rRNA intergenic spacer region (ITS) in order to evaluate a possible transmission route. A total of 260 spleen samples and 118 deer keds were collected…

First Molecular Characterization of Hypoderma actaeon in Cattle and Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) in Portugal.

Hypoderma spp. larvae cause subcutaneous myiasis in several animal species. The objective of the present investigation was to identify and characterize morphologically and molecularly the larvae of Hypoderma spp. collected from cattle (Bos taurus taurus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) in the district of Castelo Branco, Portugal. For this purpose, a total of 8 larvae were collected from cattle (n=2) and red deer (n=6). After morphological identification of Hypoderma spp. larvae, molecular characterization was based on PCR-RFLP and mitochondrial CO1 gene sequence analysis. All larvae were morphol…

Multiple osteochondromas of the antlers and cranium in a free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

This paper reports a case of multiple osteochondromas affecting the antlers and the left zygomatic bone of a free-ranging adult white-tailed … scientific literature. The case presented here is the first report of multiple osteochondromas in a deer. As antlers are regularly collected as trophies, and huge numbers of them are critically inspected each year, the fact that thus far only two cases of antler osteochondromas have been reported suggests that these tumors are very rare.

Gross anatomy of the male genital organs of the pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Linnaeus 1758).

To describe the macroscopic anatomy of the genital organs of the male pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), organs from ten animals found dead in a captive breeding station were dissected. The unpigmented scrotum was located in the inguinal region near the body, and was covered by the thighs. In the investments of the testicles the dartos tunic was greatly developed. The cremaster muscle was located dorsocaudal to the testicle, and was divided caudally into three bundles of fibers. The right testicle was significantly heavier than the left, and there was a positive relationship between body we…

Prevalence and identity of Sarcocystis spp. in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Spain: a morphological study.

Muscular samples from the oesophagus, diaphragm and heart of 101 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) hunted in Galicia (Northwestern Spain) were examined, by the compression method, for the presence of Sarcocystis spp. infection. The structure of the cyst wall was examined by light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The overall prevalence of infection was very high (99%), with a density of 404 cysts/sample (SD 812). The prevalence was very similar in the different examined muscle types (99% heart and diaphragm, and 98.9% oesophagus). A significantly higher intensity of infection was f…

High sensitivity and versatility of the DEER experiment on nitroxide radical pairs at Q-band frequencies.

Measurement of distances with the Double Electron-Electron Resonance (DEER) experiment at X-band frequencies using a pair of nitroxides as spin labels is a popular biophysical tool for studying function-related conformational dynamics of proteins. The technique is intrinsically highly precise and can potentially access the range from 1.5 to 6-10 nm. However, DEER performance drops strongly when relaxation rates of the nitroxide spin labels are high and available material quantities are low, which is usually the case for membrane proteins reconstituted into liposomes. This leads to elevated noi…

Development of the thymus and Peyer's patches in the first year of life in red deer (Cervus elaphus).

In young ruminants, as in most animals, the thymus and Peyer's patches (PP) play a key role in immune function. In sheep and cattle it has been shown that they follow a recognisable pattern of development throughout early life but a study of these tissues in red deer (Cervus elaphus) had not been previously conducted. Red deer are undergoing increasing domestication thus it was important to determine whether there were any significant differences between species. Samples from the thymus, jejunal PP and ileal PP were obtained from deer at 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age. Tissues were me…

Molecular cloning of CD18 of bison, deer and elk, and comparison with that of other ruminants and non-ruminants.

Pneumonia caused by Mannheimia haemolytica is an important disease of cattle, domestic sheep, bighorn sheep and goats. Leukotoxin (Lkt) produced by M. haemolytica is cytolytic to all leukocyte subsets of these species. Lkt utilizes CD18, the beta subunit of beta(2)-integrins, as its functional receptor on leukocytes of these species. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that leukocytes from bison, deer, and elk are also susceptible to Lkt-induced cytolysis. The availability of cDNA encoding CD18 of bison, deer and elk would facilitate the comparison of a greater number of ruminant CD18 cDNA with that …

Estrogens are involved in seasonal regulation of spermatogenesis and sperm maturation in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

Roe deer (a seasonal breeder, rut: July to August) is a well characterized model for studying the seasonal regulation of testicular activity. However, not much is known about the impact of estrogens on seasonally determined sperm production. We therefore explored the time and cell type specific expression of estrogen receptors and of enzymes involved in steroid biosynthesis in roe deer testicular parenchyma and in the epididymis. Every second month during the entire seasonal cycle five roe bucks were castrated (n=30). Estrogen receptor (ER) alpha, ERbeta and the enzymes P450Aromatase and P450C…

Refrigerated storage of red deer epididymal spermatozoa in the epididymis, diluted and with vitamin C supplementation.

We have approached the problem of refrigerated storage of epididymal sperm samples from red deer by comparing three options: storing the genital (testicles within the scrotum), diluting the semen in extender or diluting the semen in extender supplemented with an anti-oxidant. Twenty-nine pairs of testes were collected. Spermatozoa from one of each of the pairs were immediately recovered, and diluted to 400 x 10(6) sperm/ml in Tris-citrate-fructose with 20% egg yolk. Control group was stored as such, and Anti-oxidant group was supplemented with 0.8 mm vitamin C. The remaining epididymides and t…

Sperm subpopulations in Iberian red deer epididymal sperm and their changes through the cryopreservation process.

We have applied a statistical protocol based on principal component analysis, clustering methods, and discriminant analysis for the identification of sperm subpopulations in computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) data. Samples were obtained from the cauda epididymis of 11 Iberian red deer and cryopreserved following a standard protocol. Motility by CASA was analyzed just after sperm recovery, just before freezing, and after thawing, and eight motility descriptors for each individual spermatozoon were recorded. Sperm viability and acrosomal status were also assessed. Subpopulation analysis was…

Genomic sequencing of deer tick virus and phylogeny of powassan-related viruses of North America.

Powassan (POW) virus is responsible for central nervous system infection in humans in North America and the eastern parts of Russia. Recently, a new flavivirus, deer tick (DT) virus, related to POW virus was isolated in the United States, but neither its pathogenic potential in human nor the taxonomic relationship with POW virus has been elucidated. In this study, we obtained the near-full-length genomic sequence of the DT virus and complete sequences of 3 genomic regions of 15 strains of POW-related virus strains. The phylogeny revealed 2 lineages, one of which had the prototype POW virus and…

Epidemiology and pathogenesis of Mycobacterium bovis infection of red deer (Cervus elaphus) in New Zealand.

AIMS: This study was initiated to investigate aspects of the epidemiology, pathogenesis and transmission of tuberculosis in wild red deer, with the aim of determining whether this species may be considered a reservoir host of Mycobacterium bovis in New Zealand. METHOD: One hundred and six wild red deer (Cervus elaphus) carcasses from the Castlepoint and Hauhungaroa Range areas, which are endemic for bovine tuberculosis, were examined for the presence of M. bovis infection. Samples were also examined from 46 skin test-positive farmed deer killed at two deer slaughter premises. Where possible, …

[Studies on the Filariidae of Cervidae in southern Germany. 2. Filariidae of the red deer (Cervus elaphus)].

In southern Germany many of the red deer are infected with 4 filariid species. The microfilariae of 3 subcutaneous and one intradermal filariae are described. Skin snips were taken according to a regular pattern from the hides of several killed deer. The emerging microfilariae were identified and counted, and the characteristic distribution of each species in the skin was plotted. The adult worms of O. tarsicola are located on the abductor tendons of the tibiotarsal or radiocarpal joints. Some microfilariae are found in the tissues near the adults, but they concentrate at a considerable distan…

Deer antler stem cell-derived exosomes: a regenerative medicine powerhouse from nature's own repair kit.

Exosomes are essential mediators of intercellular communication and, as such, have attracted considerable interest in regenerative medicine. Aantler stem cells (ASCs) have become the central candidate in the field of the periodic regeneration of the deer antlers-the only mammalian organ that can entirely regenerate; they have been found to inherit regenerative characteristics of their parent cells, combined with a low immunogenicity. This is a systematic review of the research advancements on ASC-Exos, including the following main aspects: At the technical level, it describes the isolation tec…

Self-Mutilating Lesions Associated with Rabies in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus): Detection and Diagnosis.

Rabies is a universally fatal viral disease that affects a wide variety of mammalian species, including carnivores and herbivores. While testing and confirmed reports in wild carnivores are common, comparatively less is known about this disease in wild herbivores. Between 2022 and 2024, nine white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania, USA were diagnosed with rabies. Eight (89%) presented with erratic neurologic signs and one was found dead. Evidence of chronic self-mutilation characterized by hair loss and thickened, hardened, and hyperpigmented skin was present on the head in …
