Odontogenic cysts: a clinical study of 695 cases.

The aim of this study was to analyze the files of 695 consecutive patients operated on under general anesthesia for odontogenic cysts in an adult French teaching hospital for comparison with findings in world surveys. A retrospective survey of cysts of the jaws was undertaken at the Maxillofacial department, Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital, Paris, France. Data were retrieved from case notes, imaging, histopathology records and follow-up reports from January 1995 to January 2005. The mean age of patients was 41.8 +/- 15.8 years. There was an overall male to female ratio of 1.86:1. Mandibl

Pathological conditions of the mandible: their effect on the radiographic appearance of the inferior dental (mandibular) canal.

Whilst the special anatomical features of the mandible may make radiographic comparison of jaw lesions with similar conditions in other bones more difficult, the changes that occur in respect to the mandibular canal and the teeth may in themselves aid diagnosis. Benign cysts and neoplasms generally cause a displacement of the mandibular canal, but its cortical plate remains intact, Severe infections and malignant tumours result in an irregular erosion of bone and loss of the sclerotic outlines of the canal.

A study of biological chemistry on the nature of jaw cysts. On the maintainance of homoeostasis in jaw cyst fluid.

Jaw cyst lining cells have an active transporting mechanism for Na+ ion and K+ion, a secreting mechanism and a selecting mechanism, and they allow permeation of electrolytes, lipids and protein into cysts. The components within the cysts have a controlling metabolism, and keep the system stable. Tumour wall cells of cystic ameloblastoma have only a passive transporting mechanism for various substances. Their nature differs from that of jaw cyst lining cells.

Pericoronal radiolucencies and the significance of early detection.

Pericoronal radiolucencies are common radiographic findings encountered in general dental practice. They usually represent a normal or enlarged dental follicle that requires no intervention; alternatively they may represent a pathological entity that requires appropriate management and histopathological interpretation. A pericoronal space of greater than 2.5mm on an intraoral radiograph and greater than 3mm on a rotational panoramic radiograph should be regarded as suspicious. Although many pathological processes may present radiographically as pericoronal radiolucencies associated with unerup

Atypical Presentation and Surgical Management of Ectopic Mandibular Third Molar in Subcondylar Region: A Rare Case Report.

Ectopic teeth arise from developmental abnormalities and can be supernumerary, deciduous, or permanent teeth. They can cause orofacial pain, swelling, and infection. There is a major paucity in literature about ectopic mandibular third molar (EMTM) and its causes, symptoms, and treatment. We present an unusual case of EMTM in the mandibular subcondylar region and its surgical management. A 58-year-old female reported with complain of pain and swelling in the right preauricular region. On radiographic assessment, the right mandibular third molar was ectopically present in the subcondylar region

Panoramic radiographic examination of 704 Danish children aged 9--10 years.

Panoramic radiographs of 704 apparently health children aged 9--10 years were examined regarding anomalies and pathologic conditions in the maxillofacial area. Almost all findings were mesial to the molars. 1.7% of the children had a supernumerary tooth, 7.7% had hypodontia. Malposition of 631 permanent teeth was recorded. 42 dentigerous cysts were detected. Malformed crown or root was seen on 60 permanent teeth. Caries was found on 224 primary and 32 permanent teeth. 257 primary teeth showed atypical resorption, and 53 had a periapical inflammatory radiolucency. 20 retained roots of primary t

p53 protein and Ki-67 reactivity in epithelial odontogenic lesions. An immunohistochemical study.

Forty-five examples of epithelial odontogenic lesions (9 ameloblastomas (AB): 13 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC): 15 dentigerous cysts (DC): 6 radicular cysts (RC): and 2 odontogenic carcinomas (OC)) were immunohistochemically analyzed for the presence of p53 protein (p53P) and proliferative activity as indicated by positivity for Ki-67 antigen. p53P+ cells, detected as dense and/or faint nuclear staining, were found in 42 of the 45 odontogenic lesions examined. Dense p53P reactivity was most commonly detected in OKC, AB and OC, with other lesions generally exhibiting only weak nuclear reactivit

Molariform mesiodens in primary dentition.

Mesiodens is a midline supernumerary tooth commonly seen in the maxillary arch, and incidence of molariform mesiodens in the maxillary midline is rare in permanent dentition and extremely uncommon in primary dentition. A midline supernumerary tooth in the primary dentition can cause ectopic or delayed eruption of permanent central incisors which will further alter occlusion and may compromise esthetics and formation of dentigerous cysts. This paper reports a rare case of the presence of a molariform mesiodens in the primary dentition. On clinical and radiographic examination, flaring of the pr

Ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus: A case report and literature review.

Ectopic eruption of teeth is a rare phenomenon although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, and maxillary sinus. This impaction can present itself in a variety of ways such as chronic or recurrent sinusitis, sepsis, and facial numbness and can also be asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to describe, by means of research literature and by a case report, the characteristics and occurrence of ectopic eruption in the maxillary sinus. We have analyzed and compared clinical cases of ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus with a search on PubMed utilizing keywo

A radiographic four-year follow-up study of asymptomatic mandibular third molars in young adults.

Fifty-five asymptomatic mandibular third molars (M3) in 34 dental students (mean age 20.6 years at the start of the study) were followed radiographically for 4 years. Based on clinical evaluation the 55 teeth included 20 almost erupted, 13 partly erupted and 22 non-erupted M3. The following were assessed on the radiographs: root development, level of eruption, sagittal angulation, resorption, pericoronitis/bony pockets/paradental cysts and widening of the periodontal space/dentigerous cysts. The state of 21 teeth (38 per cent) was radiographically changed at the end of the observation period.

Leptin Receptor-Expressing (LepR+) Fibroblasts Activated by BMP Signaling Promote Bone Resorption in Developmental Odontogenic Cysts.

Cystic lesions are more prevalent in jawbones than in other bones. Odontogenic cysts are typically painless and asymptomatic and often reach significant sizes before detection. Unlike odontogenic cysts of inflammatory origin, understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis and progression of developmental odontogenic cysts remains incomplete. This study aimed to elucidate the cause and mechanisms of bone resorption in developmental odontogenic cysts. First, single-cell RNA sequencing was conducted for one of the most common developmental odontogenic cysts, dentigerous cysts (DCs), and the obta

Building Automation Pipeline for Diagnostic Classification of Sporadic Odontogenic Keratocysts and Non-Keratocysts Using Whole-Slide Images.

The microscopic diagnostic differentiation of odontogenic cysts from other cysts is intricate and may cause perplexity for both clinicians and pathologists. Of particular interest is the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), a developmental cyst with unique histopathological and clinical characteristics. Nevertheless, what distinguishes this cyst is its aggressive nature and high tendency for recurrence. Clinicians encounter challenges in dealing with this frequently encountered jaw lesion, as there is no consensus on surgical treatment. Therefore, the accurate and early diagnosis of such cysts will b

Combined immunohistochemistry for the differential diagnosis of cystic jaw lesions: its practical use in surgical pathology.

AIMS: Histopathological distinction of cystic jaw lesions, including odontogenic tumours, is challenging because their lining epithelia, which are basically stratified squamous epithelia, resemble each other, especially when they become hyperplastic from inflammatory reaction. The aim of this study was to seek practical measures to differentiate such lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen surgical specimens from unicystic ameloblastomas (UAs), 17 from keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs), 13 from dentigerous cysts (DCs), 10 from lateral periodontal cysts (LPCs) and 20 from radicular cysts
