The impact of childhood trauma on psychological interventions for depression during pregnancy and postpartum: a systematic review.

Women who have experienced childhood trauma (CT) are at increased risk for depression during pregnancy and postpartum, pregnancy complications, and adverse child outcomes. There are effective psychotherapeutic interventions to treat depression during pregnancy and postpartum, yet there is a paucity of literature on the impact of CT on treatment outcomes. This review aims to determine whether and how maternal CT history affects the outcomes of psychological interventions for depression during pregnancy and postpartum. PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library searches were conducted to identify pa

Postpartum depressive symptoms and its association to daytime sleepiness and restless legs during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a common condition, which consequences might be harmful for both mother and child. Since sleep and depression are closely related it is possible that women who suffer from sleep related problems during pregnancy are more likely to develop depression in the postpartum period. This study aims to investigate the possible association between depressive symptoms in the postpartum period and sleep related problems during pregnancy. METHODS: In this study 293 women in the last trimester of pregnancy answered a questionnaire about symptoms of restless legs, snorin

Effects of maternal depressive symptomatology during pregnancy and the postpartum period on infant-mother attachment.

AIM: Postnatal depression has demonstrated long-term consequences on child cognitive and emotional development; however, the link between maternal and child pathology has not been clearly identified. We conducted a prospective study using self-rating questionnaires to clarify the association between bonding disorder and maternal mood during pregnancy and after childbirth. METHODS: A total of 389 women participated in this study and completed questionnaires. Participants were asked to complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale four times dur

Symptoms of postpartum depression and early interruption of exclusive breastfeeding in the first two months of life.

This study evaluates the association between postpartum depression and interruption of exclusive breastfeeding in the first two months of life. Cohort study of 429 infants < or = 20 days of age to four primary health care units in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Interruption of exclusive breastfeeding (outcome) was defined as the introduction of water, other types of liquids, milk, or formulas or any food. Postpartum depression was assessed using the Edinburgh Post-Natal Depression Scale. Associations between variables were expressed as prevalence ratios (baseline) and risk ratios (follow-up), with th

Mild hypomania (the highs) can be a feature of the first postpartum week. Association with later depression.

About 10% of women show elation and associated features of hypomania in the first 5 days following childbirth. These symptoms can be detected using a self-rating scale (the 'Highs') based on SADS-L criteria. This phenomenon has been confirmed using the observer-rated Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale, which also revealed a high degree of related irritability. Significantly more women scoring > or = 8 on the Highs scale at 3 days postpartum went on to manifest depression at 6 weeks than did subjects with no psychopathology in the early puerperium. It is suggested that the 'highs' fo

Prevalence of Postpartum Depression Among Women Attending Primary Care in Southern Mexico: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and objective Postpartum depression (PPD) is a frequent maternal mental health disorder associated with adverse outcomes for both mothers and their children. Its burden may be particularly relevant in regions characterized by social vulnerability and limited access to specialized mental health services. Epidemiological data from southern Mexico remain scarce, especially in primary care settings where early identification is critical. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of PPD among women attending a primary care unit in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico. Methods A cr

Integrated proteomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic profiling identifies SRA1 as a novel therapeutic target for postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is among the most common complications of childbirth, and identifying novel treatments is vital. We aimed to identify potential drug targets for PPD by integrating the plasma proteome, transcriptome and epigenome. We designed a comprehensive analysis pipeline involving two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) (for proteins), colocalisation (for coding genes), and summary-based MR (SMR) (for mRNA and DNA methylation) to identify potential therapeutic targets for PPD. Genetic data on the plasma proteome were obtained from 4907 aptamers in 35,559 Icelanders and 7596 pro

Intergenerational support, conflict, and postpartum depression trajectories among Chinese mothers: Family-based care and multilevel predictors.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) remains a major public health concern. In China, the postpartum period is embedded within a family-based caregiving system characterized by intensive intergenerational involvement. Within this context, intergenerational support (IS) and intergenerational conflict (IC) often coexist, forming a distinct stress-regulation environment. Guided by the stress-buffering model of social support, this study conceptualizes the Chinese postpartum family as a dynamic system in which IS and IC jointly shape maternal mental health over time. METHODS: A four-wave longi

Dopamine D2 receptor agonists prevent impairment of maternal care in lipopolysaccharide-induced postpartum depression model mice.

Postpartum depression is a prevalent mental disorder that affects mothers and has adverse effects on families. The decline in parenting quality associated with postpartum depression raises concerns about the adverse impact on children. Therefore, it is desirable to prevent deterioration in parenting quality in depressed mothers. This study aims to investigate whether antidepressive agents can prevent the decline in parenting quality associated with postpartum depression. Maternal care and sucrose palatability were evaluated in postpartum female mice with intraperitoneal lipopolysaccharide (LPS

Genome-wide association study of early-onset and late-onset postpartum depression: the IGEDEPP prospective study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) appears at two peak periods: early-onset prior to 2 months after delivery and late-onset (2 months after delivery and beyond). The aim of our study is to evaluate the different genetic factors associated with early- and late-onset PPD. With the French multicenter interaction of gene and environment of depression during postpartum (IGEDEPP) cohort, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 234 women with early-onset PPD and 223 women with late-onset PPD, as well as 1,204 controls with no history of lifetime depression. We performed post-GWAS analyses: fu

Analysis of risk factors for postpartum depression after cesarean section in women with early-onset preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset preeclampsia significantly increases maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Many pregnant women with early onset preeclampsia choose cesarean section as their delivery method. Although extensive research has explored the association between postpartum depression (PPD) and cesarean section, few studies have investigated the risk factors after cesarean section in women with early-onset preeclampsia. AIM: To examine these risk factors through a retrospective, observational analysis of 287 women who underwent a cesarean section for early preeclampsia between June 2014
