Allergens in sesame oil contact dermatitis.

In 13 patients with contact allergy to sesame oil, studies were undertaken to elucidate the nature of the allergens. Sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin were identified in crude and purified (pharmaceutical) sesame oil. Patch tests showed 8 of the 13 patients to be positive to sesamol and 12 to sesamolin and sesamin. Patch tests with the pure substances on thin-layer sheets were inconclusive as to any difference between these substances. Group allergy to several substances related to sesamol could not be clearly demonstrated.

Basophilic leukocytes in allergic contact dermatitis.

A variety of cell-mediated hypersensitivity reactions in experimental animals include a prominent infiltrate of basophilic leukocytes. This form of reactivity has been designated cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity and is favored when sensitization to several types of antigen is accomplished without the use of complete Freund's adjuvant. A similar type of hypersensitivity response was sought in man using morphologic techniques which permit identification of basophilic leukocytes. Eight individuals with allergic contact dermatitis to a variety of allergens were studied and six of these develope

Adverse cutaneous reaction to diabetic glucose sensors and insulin pumps: Irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis?

BACKGROUND: Adverse cutaneous reactions to diabetes medical devices (glucose sensors and insulin pumps) are described, notably allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) with isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) and N,N dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) as the main allergen. OBJECTIVES: To determine if all cases of adverse cutaneous reactions observed with diabetes medical devices (ie FreeStyle Libre, Enlite sensors or insulin pumps), referred to our department with suspected allergies are confirmed as ACD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-two patients who presented skin reactions to diabetes medical devices were patch test

Contact Dermatitis Associated With Skin Cleansers: Retrospective Analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data 2000-2014.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information regarding contact dermatitis (CD) associated with skin cleansers (SCs). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of allergic patch test (APT) reactions and irritant CD (ICD) associated with SCs. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was performed using North American Contact Dermatitis Group data, 2000-2014. RESULTS: Of 32,945 tested patients, 1069 (3.24%) had either APT reaction or ICD associated with SCs. Of these, 692 (64.7%) had APT reaction only, 350 (32.7%) had ICD only, and 27 (2.5%) had both. Individuals with

Occupational contact dermatitis in painters: an analysis of patch test data from the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group.

BACKGROUND: Painters are among the occupational groups that most commonly experience occupational contact dermatitis, but few investigations exist concerning this occupation. OBJECTIVES: To characterize painters with contact dermatitis and identify the most common allergens associated with the occupation. Materials and methods. All patch test results of 219 painters and 1095 matched controls registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group between 2001 and 2010 were analysed. RESULTS: Hand eczema (p < 0.0001) and occupational contact dermatitis (p < 0.0001) were observed significantly more

The Role and Diagnosis of Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis.

Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) have increased penetration of allergens, immune dysregulation (including shared cytokine pathways), and frequent use of emollients and topical medications, all of which may predispose toward developing allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Recent systematic reviews have suggested that ACD is a significant clinical problem in both children and adults with AD. While this remains controversial, ACD remains an important comorbidity and potential exacerbant of AD in clinical practice. Common relevant allergens, include lanolin, neomycin, formaldehyde, sesquiterpene

Whither... the future for contact dermatitis? A report from the 2007 International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis.

In our report we summarize presentations made at the International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis meeting which took place at the St John's Institute of Dermatology, London, on 1 June 2007, and which brought together over 100 dermatologists from the U.K., continental Europe and the U.S.A. During this small and informal meeting, the state-of-the art lectures on various aspects of contact dermatitis were followed by energetic discussions.
