BACKGROUND: Mechanics are at higher risk to develop occupational skin diseases from exposure to irritants, oils, greases, preservatives, and metals.
AIMS: The aim of the study was to investigate contact dermatitis in mechanics who underwent patch test in Northeastern Italy and compare them with white-collar workers (WCW).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From 1996 to 2016, 27,381 patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested in Northeastern Italy; in this group, 1270 mechanics were studied. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI), adjusted by age and sex, were calcula

Workers in the printing industry serve as an example of a working population that is at high risk of developing occupational skin disease. Daily exposures include both irritants and sensitizing agents. While many substances have been associated with occupational contact dermatitis in this population, no detailed cases of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from propylene glycol (PG) have been reported to date. We present a case of a printing tradesman who developed work-related ACD from PG and who was subsequently able to return to work after a multidisciplinary team assessment that included a c

Occupational skin diseases (mainly irritative and allergic contact dermatitis) are a significant part of occupational diseases. The economical burden of occupational skin diseases (OSD) is huge comprising direct costs (treatment, compensation) as well as indirect costs due to sick leave and lack of productivity. The management of a case of OSD is complex requiring different steps ranging from diagnosis to prevention, through interpretation of patch tests and outpatient treatment and involving an interdisciplinary approach. Patch tests alone cannot prove the allergic origin of OSD because posit

Data on occupational contact urticaria (protein contact dermatitis included) in Finland during 1990-1994 were analyzed. Altogether 815 cases were reported to the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases during this period, compared with 1944 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Accordingly, the total number of occupational allergic contact dermatoses was 2759, 29.5% being contact urticaria and 70.5% being allergic contact dermatitis. Occupational contact urticaria was much more common in women (70%) than in men (30%). The 6 most common causes of contact urticaria were (1) cow da

BACKGROUND: 4,4'-Diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) is an aromatic amine used as a hardener, insulator and anticorrosive. Exposure implies risk of being sensitized and developing contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of contact sensitization to DDM among patients with contact dermatitis and the role of occupational exposure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1996 to 2012, 24 056 consecutive patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested in north-eastern Italy. Individual characteristics were collected through a standardized questionnai

Occupational skin disorders are very common and are a surprisingly frequent cause of lost work time. Failure to suspect an occupational cause can lead to repeated treatment failure and needlessly prolong patient misery and frustration. Primary care providers play a key role in recognizing possible occupational causes and arranging appropriate education, preventive measures, and treatment. Occupational skin conditions often occur in nonindustrial settings in workers such as hairdressers, health care personnel, and food handlers. Irritant contact dermatitis is by far the most prevalent occupatio

Occupational skin disease (OSD) is a significant public health concern. To keep OSDs under surveillance, a register of OSDs (BKH-S) was implemented in 1999 in the Saarland, FRG. We conducted a population-based register study to analyse all initial reports of OSDs reported to the BKH-S. 336 cases were prospectively assessed from July 1999 to June 2001. In 78% (n = 263) of the cases an occupational cause for the skin disease was stated, 91% (n = 240) of which fell within 16 occupational groups. This is equivalent to 6.8 cases per 10,000 workers per year within these occupational groups. Notably,

Cutaneous manifestations of occupational allergic diseases are mainly represented by contract dermatitis and less frequently recognized for mucous localizations. Contact erythema multiforme is often a severe disease. Rarely, contact dermatitis mimics a lymphoma. Irritant contact dermatitis usually differs clinically, but the diagnosis may required skin testing and a biopsy. The allergens or the irritants are sometimes transferred by air, and there is an ingrowing literature about airborne dermatoses. Modifications of the eruptions by physical factors such as the sun, or by infections such as d

Every year, new contact allergens, chemicals reported to have caused contact allergy/ACD for the first time, are described in literature. In the journals Contact Dermatitis and Dermatitis, 172 such compounds were identified in the period 2008-2015, 119 of which induced ACD. These are presented with the following data: name, synonyms, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, patch test data, function or class, causative product, number of patients, occupation (in case of occupational ACD), additional clinical data (if applicable), and references. Approximately one third of the new allergens wer

Hairdressers are one of the largest groups affected by occupational contact dermatitis. In this population-based study, 193 trainee hairdressers and 184 practising hairdressers each completed a questionnaire and had their hands examined. Participants were asked about past or present atopy including eczema, asthma or hayfever, which occurred in 59.2%, and were individually correlated with a history of occupational skin problems. Almost 60% of hairdressers and trainees had experienced changes on their hands since commencing hairdressing, while 29% had evidence of abnormal skin on examination on

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis is a significant health problem in hairdressers. The number of occupational skin diseases in this group constantly increases. The most frequent factors contributing to the skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleaches, permanent wave solutions, and components of gloves.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 121 hairdressers (106 women and 6 men) was selected from 4523 patients (2996 women and 1527 men) referred to the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, in 1995-2008, with suspected occupational skin diseas

839 patients were patch tested with a series of 31 plastics and glues allergens at a dermatologic clinic over a period of 7 years. 52 (6%) had a positive patch test reaction to 1 or more such allergens. Clinic charts of 47 patients (out of 52) were available for the study. All but 3 patients had dermatitis on their hands: 17 had only hand dermatitis. 25 (53%) patients' test results were of present or past relevance to their skin diseases. 11 patients (68%) with occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and 14 (45%) with non-occupational dermatitis had relevant reactions. p-tertiary-butylp

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is a common occupational disease. Evidence suggests that education and training are effective prevention strategies. In spite of these known prevention strategies, workers continue to develop OCD. Little is reported regarding the actual training experience of workers.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the training experience of workers with contact dermatitis to identify areas for improvement.
METHODS: Participants were workers being assessed for contact dermatitis in an occupational health clinic. The anonymous survey collected demographics, workplace c

993 cases of occupational skin disease (OSD) were diagnosed in a private dermatology practice over an 8-year period. Dermatologists were the major source of referral. The sex ratio was 2.4 males to 1 female. Patch tests were conducted in 79% of cases. Wet work industries predominated in females; in males the causative industries were more varied. Apprentices were affected in a high proportion of hairdressers and food handlers. Atopics accounted for 75% of the apprentice hairdressers. Atopics also were more prevalent in females with OSD than males. 29% of all cases had suffered from OSD for ove

Skin disorders were reported in 33% of catering staff and 35% of women cleaners who returned a questionnaire, and were employed in a large hospital. Hand dermatitis occurred in 15% of the caterers and 12% of the cleaners. In the majority, the dermatitis was irritant in origin and related to their wet work occupations. Cleaners had a high prevalence of jewellery dermatitis. Limited patch testing revealed a majority positive to nickel, but a third were negative, indicating that jewellery reactions often but not invariably predict nickel sensitivity. Few subjects were atopic, but some psoriatic p

In a retrospective study covering a five-year period, 3664 consecutive patients suspected to suffer from contact dermatitis were patch tested in a private dermatology clinic. 180 of these patients had food handling occupations; they were employed in restaurant or institutional kitchens, fish factories, bakeries, or slaughterhouses. 25 of the 180 patients had protein dermatitis caused by meat or vegetables. This particular dermatitis was most common among restaurant personnel who make openface sandwiches and fish factory workers. 59 of the 180 patients had positive patch tests: 9 of these were

Skin conditions such as acne, urticaria, psoriasis, and particularly eczema (dermatitis) may have many causes. However, a work-related aetiology is often forgotten. Hand eczema is the most common occupational dermatosis. Exposure to skin irritants is the main cause with wet work playing a major role. The cause cannot be inferred from the clinical picture and it is almost impossible to distinguish between irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Besides observation and history-taking, epicutaneous contact allergological (patch) testing is necessary for this. In occupational dermatoses, patch t

Occupational diseases of dentists and dental nurses were compiled from the Finnish Register of Occupational Diseases. The cases were recorded during 3 3-year observation periods, namely 1982-1984, 1986-1988, and 1992-1994 (i.e., 9 observation years). The relative risk of developing occupational allergic contact dermatitis in different occupations was calculated from the statistics of the years 1986-1991, and was expressed as the age-standardized rate ratio (SRR). During the 9 observation years, the majority of registered occupational diseases of dentists and dental nurses were skin diseases (2
