OBJECTIVE: To have a 5-year review of the maternal mortality ratio in the largest centrally located Mission hospital in Benin City where a large proportion of women deliver yearly.

Two cases that required soft tissue coverage to the anterior aspect of the elbow are presented. A fasciocutaneous intercostal perforator chest wall flap was used for one patient when only skin and fascia coverage was required. A latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap was used to provide soft tissue coverage and supply motor power for elbow flexion after contracture release in the other. The surgical techniques for each of these flaps are discussed in the context of addressing soft tissue traumatic injuries about the elbow in a developing country with limited resources.

AIM: To show the value of sub-Tenon's depo-methylprednisolone acetate followed by oral prednisolone in the management of optic neuritis in African patients.
METHODOLOGY: Two female patients who presented to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin city, Nigeria and one male patient who presented to the Eye clinic of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Warri, Nigeria with optic neuritis were given a single dose of sub-Tenon's depo-methylprednisolone acetate 40 mg followed by oral prednisolone 60 mg daily and their vision monitored.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate our experience with the endoscopic management of lower and upper urinary tract stones in pediatric patients in the Republic of Yemen.
METHODS: From January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1998, 290 endoscopic operations were performed on 265 pediatric patients up to 14 years of age, 173 on the upper and 117 on the lower urinary tract. This study was conducted to evaluate the outcome of pediatric renal transplants at our center. A retrospective analysis was done on 39 pediatric transplants (age at transplant <18 years) done at our center over the last 10 years. The mean age at transplant was 15.6+/-1 years (10-17 years). They comprised 4.2% of all renal transplants done at our center (39/921) over the period. Girls comprised 17.5% of total recipients ( n=7). Two patients had a preemptive transplant. A review of 21 cases of patients with spinal tuberculosis has been performed, with special attention being paid to methods of diagnosis and the surgical treatment undertaken. We found that the clinical presentation of the condition was often similar to that of malignant disease within the spine, with the commonest presenting features being back pain (95%), an evaluated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (100%) and neurological deficits (47%). Between January 1968 and December 1992, 136 kidney transplants were performed in the University Hospital of Ribeirão Preto, with women of childbearing age (14 to 40 years) as receptors.
