Current Practice and Expert Perspectives on Cultural Adaptations of Digital Health Interventions: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Some people are less likely to benefit from digital health interventions (DHIs) than others. Culture, along with other factors, contributes to these differences. DHIs that do not address a population's cultural norms or concerns are likely to be less effective. One way to create culturally sensitive DHIs is through cultural adaptations. Yet, there is currently little evidence-based guidance on when and how to adapt DHIs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to capture the experiences of experts to understand the (1) current practices, (2) challenges, and (3) recommendations around culturally adapt

Smartphones in the classroom: power tool or source of distraction? Evidence from a cross-lagged panel study.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of mobile devices in educational settings suggests that smartphones may function both as learning tools and as potential sources of distraction. Existing cross-sectional studies have been unable to adequately explain the dynamic causal relationships among technology acceptance, digital distraction, and academic engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the reciprocal relationships among these three variables using a longitudinal design, thereby providing empirical evidence for the integration of educational technology. METHODS: A three-wave longitudinal

The 4 Ss Framework for Designing Age-Friendly Communities of the Future: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital technology is increasingly being used to deliver interventions and initiatives to support the well-being of older adults. However, few studies have conducted needs assessments to identify the future well-being service requirements of an older adult population and their preferred modes of delivery, whether via digital technology or, in- person, or a combination of both (ie, a hybrid model). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the requirements of a rural region in New Zealand to inform planning to meet the future well-being needs of its older adult population over the …

Digital twins in urological oncology and surgery: A review of emerging applications.

BACKGROUND: Digital twin technology represents a transformative approach in healthcare, creating virtual replicas of physical entities that enable real-time data integration, predictive modelling, and personalised treatment strategies. In urology, this emerging technology offers unprecedented opportunities to optimise patient care through simulation-based decision-making. AIM: This narrative review comprehensively examines current applications of digital twin technology in urology, evaluates its clinical utility across various urological conditions, and identifies key challenges limiting its

Incorporating digital imaging into dental hygiene practice.

The objective of this paper is to describe digital imaging technology: available modalities, scientific imaging process, advantages and limitations, and applications to dental hygiene practice. Advances in technology have created innovative imaging modalities for intraoral radiography that eliminate film as the traditional image receptor. Digital imaging generates instantaneous radiographic images on a display monitor following exposure. Advantages include lower patient exposure per image and elimination of film processing. Digital imaging enhances diagnostic capabilities and, therefore, treat

The Role of Digital Health Equity Audits in Preventing Harmful Infodemiology.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities persist and are influenced by digital transformation. Although digital tools offer opportunities, they can also exacerbate existing inequalities, a problem amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the related infodemic. Health equity audit (HEA) tools, such as those developed in the United Kingdom, provide a framework to assess equity but require adaptation for the digital context. Digital determinants of health (DDoH) are increasingly recognized as crucial factors influencing health outcomes in the digital era. OBJECTIVE: This editorial proposes an approach to ex

Always online, still alone: A qualitative study of technology-facilitated loneliness and mood symptoms among university students.

Digital technologies are deeply embedded in university students' daily lives and are increasingly recognized as relevant to their mental health. This qualitative study explored how students experience technology facilitated loneliness and mood symptoms within the context of everyday digital use at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia. A phenomenological design was used to capture lived experiences. Twenty undergraduate students who reported daily non-academic smartphone use and feelings of loneliness and low mood participated in semi structured interviews conducted in Arabic or English

Validation of the immersion in digital life and quality of digital experience scales in German, French, Spanish, Polish and Czech.

The Quality of Digital Experience Scale (QDES) and the Immersion in Digital Life Scale (IDLS) were developed to measure positive and negative experiences of digital technology use and the extent to which different facets of life were digital. Critically, the QDES and ILDS were developed to be independent of digital device or platform, thus providing a more holistic account of digital technology use than previous measures. The objective of the current studies was to validate the QDES and IDLS in German, French, Czech, Polish and Spanish. Across the studies, data from a total of 4,447 participan…

Digital Capability, Open-Source Use, and Interoperability Standards Within the National Health Service in England: Survey of Health Care Trusts.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, the National Health Service (NHS) England sought to drive digital transformation within select NHS trusts through the Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) program. While the program did advance the NHS's integration with digital technologies, disparities in digital maturity persisted between GDE-funded and nonfunded NHS trusts. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) launched a data strategy in 2022 that aimed to develop the appropriate technical infrastructure and data architecture to enable more effective and efficient use of its data. Given the diversity in digital cap

[Challenges of digital competence in the public health department: findings from a real-world laboratory].

Not least since the COVID-19-pandemic, digitalization has become increasingly important for the work of the public health service (PHS) in order to ensure the functionality at all levels of the PHS such as the exchange of information between health authorities themselves and other stakeholders. The digital skills of employees in the local health authority (LHA) are an important factor for the digitalization und functionality of the PHS. This paper uses the example of a health authority to examine the question of what digital competence or digital skills public health service employees have and

Age-related hearing loss and "hearables": An agenda for moral considerations.

Rapid advances in digital hearing technologies, also known as hearables, are expected to disrupt the direct-to-consumer health market. For older adults with higher incidence of hearing loss, such disruption could reduce hearing problems, increase accessibility to hearing aids, and mitigate related stigmas. This paper delves into the intersection of disruptive innovation and hearables within the realm of biomedical ethics. Through a comprehensive exploration, we shed light on the ethical implications surrounding hearables. By critically evaluating the key ethical advantages and drawbacks, we fi

Digital hypertension towards to the anticipation medicine.

"Digital Hypertension" is a new research field proposed by the Japanese Society of Hypertension that integrates digital technology into hypertension management and proactively promotes research activities. This novel approach includes the development of new technologies for better BP management, such as sensors for detecting environmental factors that affect BP, information processing, and machine learning. To facilitate "Digital Hypertension," a more sophisticated BP monitoring system capable of measuring an individual's BP more frequently in various situations would be required. With the use…
