Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in treatment-seeking pathological gamblers.

Little is known about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among pathological gamblers (PGs), even though the two disorders share several clinical characteristics. We examined the relationship between pathological gambling and PTSD on measures of gambling disorder severity, experience of specific traumas, psychiatric symptoms, impulsivity, and dissociation. A total of 149 treatment-seeking PGs were surveyed. Participants were divided into two groups on the basis of their score on the PTSD Checklist (Weathers, Litz, Herman, Huska, & Keane, 1993). Thirty-four percent (n = 51) reported a high fre

Pathological gambling. A comprehensive review.

Due to recent changes of gambling laws, accessibility to gambling has become more widespread and thus, there has also been an increase in the prevalence of pathological gambling (PG). The wide range of social, economic, and psychological problems associated with PG are well known. There is a need for better understanding of PG and this review attempts to do so. Literature searches using the Medline and PsycINFO databases were used. Critical examining of the literature showed that familial/genetic, sociological, and individual factors (e.g., an individual's personality, biochemistry, psychologi

'It's a curse!': coprolalia in Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Coprolalia is a complex socially inappropriate vocal tic most frequently reported in the context of Tourette syndrome (TS) and widely portrayed as a cardinal characteristic of this condition throughout popular culture. This study investigated which clinical factors may predispose some patients with TS to experience coprolalia and the impact of this symptom on quality of life. METHODS: Participants were 60 patients with TS (39 males, mean age 32.15, SD 14.1 years) of whom 50% reported mental coprolalia (urges) and 33% reported actual involuntary swearing as a tic. Relat

Nonmotor complications of Parkinson disease.

Nonmotor manifestations are integral components of Parkinson disease (PD), and they often have a greater impact on disability and quality of life than the motor features that currently define the illness. Nonmotor features of PD, such as dementia, may be an intrinsic feature of the disorder and persist regardless of the medication state (ie, they continue to manifest in the "on" or "off" state); some nonmotor features, such as psychotic symptoms, may be iatrogenic complications of pharmacologic intervention for the treatment of the motor manifestations of PD. Iatrogenic complications, such as

Cross-species models of OCD spectrum disorders.

Several axis-I neuropsychiatric disorders are characterised by repetitive motor habits suggestive of underlying inhibitory dyscontrol, and may constitute members of a putative obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum. Notable examples include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trichotillomania (repetitive hair-pulling). Multiple tiers of evidence link these conditions with underlying dysregulation of fronto-striatal circuitry and monoamine systems. These abnormalities represent key targets for existing and novel treatment interventions. Nonetheless, the brain bases of these conditions, and trea

Internet addiction in Korean adolescents and its relation to depression and suicidal ideation: a questionnaire survey.

This study examined the relationship of Internet addiction to depression and suicidal ideation in Korean adolescents. The participants were 1573 high-school students living in a city who completed the self-reported measures of the Internet Addiction Scale, the Korean version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-Major Depression Disorder-Simple Questionnaire, and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-Junior. A correlational survey design was employed. Among the samples, 1.6% was diagnosed as Internet addicts, while 38.0% was classified as possible Internet addicts. The prevalence of

Understanding and treating kleptomania: new models and new treatments.

Kleptomania, characterized by repetitive, uncontrollable stealing of items not needed for personal use, is a disabling disorder that often goes unrecognized in clinical practice. Although originally conceptualized as an obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder, emerging evidence (clinical characteristics, familial transmission, and treatment response) suggests that kleptomania may have important similarities to both addictive and mood disorders. In particular, kleptomania frequently co-occurs with substance use disorders, and it is common for individuals with kleptomania to have first-degree rel

CSF monoamine patterns in pathological gamblers and healthy controls.

Previous reports on compounds in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of pathological gamblers have focused on disturbed NA, DA and 5-HT function in the central nervous system. We have analysed precursors, transmitters and transmitter metabolites in 3 x 6 ml of CSF obtained from one female and 11 male pathological gamblers and 11 healthy male controls lumbar punctured at the L4-5 level after 8 h of fasting without preceding strict bedrest. Pathological gamblers displayed lower CSF levels of tryptophan and 5-HT while the opposite was the case for 5-HIAA, tyrosine, DA, HVA, DOPAC and HMPG. In contrast

Pathological gambling in treatment-seeking substance abusers.

Accumulating evidence suggests that treatment-seeking substance abusers have high rates of gambling problems. However, relatively little is known about the relation between gambling problems and specific psychoactive substances apart from alcohol and methadone-treated opiate addicts. In this study of 580 individuals admitted to a residential addictions program, 10.5% were found to score in the pathological gambling range on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) within the past year. The rate of pathological gambling was much higher for cannabis abusers (24%) than for alcohol (4%), cocaine (11.

Eating disturbance and sexual trauma in childhood and adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between sexual trauma and eating disorder behavior, taking into account the effects of developmental stage of the victim and the effects of multiple sexual assaults. METHOD: Four groups of adult women took part in this study. Subjects were either victims of childhood sexual abuse, victims of rape in adulthood, victims of both childhood sexual abuse and rape, and controls who were not traumatized sexually. All subjects were assessed with semistructured interviews and self-report inventories that assessed eating disorder behavior, general psychopa

Hot-headed or impulsive?

A sample of men in prison was interviewed and rated for the presence of six behaviours commonly thought to be impulsive: alcohol abuse (CAGE positive), sedative dependence, other drug abuse, pathological gambling, repeated aggression and self-harm. They were also asked to complete the EPQ and 15 questionnaires. Out of 61 men on a 'special protection, wing, 51 agreed to take part. We found that the score on the Impulsiveness scale of the 15 correlated with the number of disorders present in individuals, even when corrected for age. Pathological gambling and self-harm did not correlate with the

Beyond the urge to move: Impulsivity, aggression and impulse control disorders in restless legs syndrome.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is typically defined as a sleep-related sensorimotor disorder, yet converging evidence indicates that it also involves clinically relevant behavioral dimensions. This case-control study systematically examined impulsivity, aggression, and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in 27 RLS patients compared to 21 healthy controls, using standardized questionnaires (BIS-11, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11; AQ, Aggression Questionnaire; mMIDI, Modified Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview), a Go/NoGo inhibitory control task, and clinical sleep measures, with reassessment af

Dopamine precursors depletion impairs impulse control in healthy volunteers.

The aim of the present study was to decipher the role of the dopamine system in impulse control. Impulsive actions entail (i) activation of the motor system by an impulse, which is an urge to act and (ii) a failure to suppress that impulse, when inappropriate, in order to prevent an error. These two aspects of action impulsivity can be experimentally disentangled in conflict reaction time tasks such as the Simon task, which measures susceptibility to acting on spontaneous impulses (as well as the proficiency of suppressing these impulses). In 12 healthy volunteers performing a Simon task, dopa

Selective cocaine-related difficulties in emotional intelligence: relationship to stress and impulse control.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) comprises the ability to perceive, use, understand, and regulate emotions and may potentially contribute to variability in risk-related factors such as stress perception and impulse control in cocaine dependent individuals. The main objective of the current study is to better define EI in cocaine dependent individuals compared with healthy controls, using the Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). Secondary analysis investigates the association between EI, IQ factors, perceived stress, and impulse control in both populations. Seventy-two ab

Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire data on alcoholic violent offenders: specific connections to severe impulsive cluster B personality disorders and violent criminality.

BACKGROUND: The validity of traditional categorical personality disorder diagnoses is currently re-evaluated from a continuous perspective, and the evolving DSM-V classification may describe personality disorders dimensionally. The utility of dimensional personality assessment, however, is unclear in violent offenders with severe personality pathology. METHODS: The temperament structure of 114 alcoholic violent offenders with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) was compared to 84 offenders without ASPD, and 170 healthy controls. Inclusion occurred during a court-ordered mental examination
