OBJECTIVE: To determine bacterial contaminants and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from medical equipment and inanimate surfaces.
RESULTS: Of 130 swabs, 115 (88.5%) swabs were culture positive, of which contaminated medical equipment and inanimate surfaces account 70 (83.3%) and 45 (97.8%), respectively. All the swabs collected from sphygmomanometer, bedside table, computer and computer standing tables were 100% contaminated with bacteria. The exact name of a contaminant is of extreme importance to the poison information specialist (SPI) in order to make a correct assessment of the poisoning exposure and to recommend proper treatment modalities. Incorrect contaminant information could lead to a serious and possibly fatal mistake on the part of the SPI. Thorough and effective interviewing techniques must be employed to avoid errors. The major problem after testing the hair of a child for drugs is the interpretation of the findings. In 2016, the laboratory received several hair specimens with the request to verify if there was any evidence of previous methadone exposure by the donor of the sample. Case 1 was a child admitted to the Emergency Unit for intense sedation and breathing difficulties. Cases 2-4 involved children found dead at home. Between January 1 and May 15, 1988, foot infections due to Mycobacterium chelonae subspecies abscessus were diagnosed in eight persons who had undergone invasive procedures at a podiatry office. Unusual human behavior leads to the emergence of new forms of infectious diseases and new routes of infection. In recent years, a new form of anthrax, called injectional anthrax, emerged and was related to 2 human anthrax outbreaks in Europe. The infection was caused by heroin contaminated with anthrax spores. OBJECTIVE: An ion chromatographic method was developed to analyze sulfur dioxide in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
METHOD: The samples were extracted with alkaline solution and reacted with formaldehyde to form hydroxymethyl sulfonic acid. The extracts were cleaned by C18 column and SO3(2-) was determined with ion chromatography equipped with a conductance detector. In the method, AS11-HC chromatographic column was used and the mobile phase was 15 mmol x L(-1) KOH.
RESULT: The calibration curve was in good linearity in the range of 1 to 100 microg (r =0.9992). The detection limit was 0.
