Management of an "Ear Camp" for children in Namibia.

OBJECTIVE: In this publication, we present our experiences with managing an "Ear Camp" in northern Namibia, where the population is predominantly black. Medical coverage for ear problems is poor in this part of the country. METHODS: Within 10 days, 38 children (median age 12 years) were operated mainly for (sub) total defects of the tympanic membrane. In two cases, an open cavity had to be created because of a cholesteatoma. We performed a tympanoplasty type I in 18 cases and a tympanoplasty type III in 20 cases. Additionally, in 8 cases an antrotomy and in another 8 cases a mastoidectomy was

Current Treatment Options for Auricular Hematomas.

Ear disease, such as otitis externa, resulting in aggressive head shaking or ear scratching, is the most common cause of the development of aural hematomas in dogs and cats. An underlying immunologic cause has also been proposed to explain cartilage and blood vessel fragility. Numerous options exist for management of aural hematomas, from medical management alone with corticosteroids, to simple hematoma centesis, to surgical intervention. Because this condition is usually secondary to another disease process, regardless of mode of treatment, likelihood of recurrence is low if the underlying co

Aesthetic surgery for microtia.

We describe here a technique for reconstruction of the external ear based upon an autogenous costal cartilage graft which is inserted into a cutaneous pocket dissected in the auricular area. Three subsequent procedures are then performed: rotation of the ear-lobe; reconstruction of the tragus; and elevation of the auricle. The ideal age for reconstruction is about 7 years. This technique was originally described by Brent, who has a very extensive experience with this kind of surgery. Skin deficiencies can be overcome by using either a temporo-parietal fascial flap or a skin expander.

Otoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Auricular deformities, specifically, prominent ears, are relatively frequent. Although the physiologic consequences are negligible, the aesthetic and psychological effects on the patient can be substantial. METHODS: Otoplasty techniques are used to correct many auricular deformities, including the prominent ear, the constricted ear, Stahl's deformity, and cryptotia. Various treatments and techniques have been developed for the correction of these deformities, including methods that excise, bend, suture, scratch, or reposition the auricular cartilage. RESULTS: The multitude of dif

Pediatric cartilage tympanoplasty with primary intubation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze the anatomical and audiologic results in pediatric Type I cartilage tympanoplasties with primary intubation. Our hypothesis was that the outcome of patients with tubes placed would be similar to those without tubes, even though the ears that received tubes were in worse condition. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of patients undergoing cartilage tympanoplasty with intubation between 2007 and 2012. METHODS: All surgeries were performed or supervised by the senior author as the surgeon, using a modification of the perichon

Epidemiology, Incidence of Infection, and Antibiotic Use in Pediatric Traumatic Ear Lacerations.

BACKGROUND: The management and use of antibiotics in pediatric ear lacerations lacks standardization. This study sought to provide a comprehensive review of these injuries and assess the impact of administering perioperative antibiotics on the incidence of infections after repair. METHODS: Retrospective review of all pediatric ear lacerations treated at our institution's emergency department (ED) between 1998 and 2024. RESULTS: A total of 246 patients (177 boys) were included. Patients aged 0-6 years were most affected (n = 117, 47.6%), with the peak between 2-5 years old (n = 78, 31.7%). Mo

Injuries of the external ear.

Ear injuries occur in people of all ages but predominate in active people such as wrestlers, boxers, and bike riders. The types and extent of injury are a function of the force causing the injury. Shearing forces of moderate intensity cause hematoma formation, whereas greater force causes lacerations or even amputation. Sharp objects cause lacerations determined by the force, direction, and point of impact. The high ratio of surface area to mass makes the auricle vulnerable to extremes of temperature. People participating in high-risk activities should wear protective headgear. The goal of tre

Relapsing polychondritis with isolated tracheobronchial involvement complicated with Sjogren's syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare, long-term, and potentially life-threatening disease characterised by recurrent paroxysmal inflammation that can involve and destroy the cartilage of the external ear, nose, larynx, and trachea. CASE SUMMARY: We here report a case of RP involving solely the tracheobronchial cartilage ring (and not the auricular. nasal or articular cartilage) complicated by Sjögren's syndrome in a 47-year-old female whose delayed diagnosis caused a sharp decline in pulmonary function. After corticosteroid treatment, her pulmonary function improved. CONCLUSIO

Ectopic external auditory canal and ossicular formation in the oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum.

Ear abnormalities in oculo-auricular-vertebral spectrum commonly present with varying degrees of external and middle ear atresias, usually in the expected locations of the temporal bone and associated soft tissues, without ectopia of the external auditory canal. We present the unique imaging of a 4-year-old girl with right hemifacial microsomia and ectopic location of an atretic external auditory canal, terminating in a hypoplastic temporomandibular joint containing bony structures with the appearance of auditory ossicles. This finding suggests an early embryological dysfunction involving Meck

[Treatment of traumatic oto-hematoma with transfixed compression sutures].

The effective early treatment of oto-hematoma is important so as to prevent reaccumulation of fluid and the typical chronic "cauliflower ear" deformity. A simple method of treatment with the use of transfixed tie-through compression mattress sutures, incorporating bolster dressings on both surfaces of the ear, following drainage of the hematoma via a small skin incision, is presented. This allows an optimal immobilisation of the skin over underlying cartilage for 7-10 days, preventing the reaccumulation of fluid with subsequent thickening and fibrosis, frequent complications of the other curre

Non-Surgical Correction of Congenital Ear Anomalies: A Critical Assessment of Caretaker Burdens and Aesthetic Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital ear anomalies result from cartilage and skin compression in utero. They can be corrected in infancy before the cartilage hardens and loses its malleability. Caretaker burden of ear molding and its impact on esthetic outcomes has not been studied. METHODS: Demographic and procedural variables were retrospectively collected for infants who underwent ear molding. Parents were surveyed regarding their experience, caretaker burden, and esthetic outcome. Outside physicians were provided with pre- and post-treatment photographs and asked to rate outcomes. A Likert scale was

Auricular chondritis associated with systemic joint and cartilage inflammation in a cat.

An adult, Japanese domestic cat presented with bilateral swelling, distortion, and erythema of ears and deformation of the limbs. Biopsy of the pinnae confirmed auricular chondritis. These lesions and the cat's general condition subsequently deteriorated, and the cat died. At necropsy, chondral changes were present in the pinnae, costae, larynx, trachea, and limbs. Histopathologically, these chondral tissues showed marked deformation with lymphocytic inflammation. The limb joint inflammation was associated with chondral erosion, deformation of subchondral bones with pannus, and thinning of can

Post-piercing perichondritis.

UNLABELLED: Piercing has become more and more popular among adolescents. The procedure is generally performed by unqualified professionals and carries its risk. Non-sterilized material or inappropiate hygiene increases the possibility of perichondritis and celulitis. The disease is characterized by erythema of the auricula pinna, unbearable pain and fever. Left untreated, the condition progresses with edema along the auricula and abscess formation that may result in ischemic necrosis and a cauliflower anesthetic deformation. The most common bacteria is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In cases with abs

Tissue-engineered cartilage as a graft source for laryngotracheal reconstruction: a pig model.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of using tissue-engineered cartilage for laryngotracheal reconstruction in the pig model. DESIGN: Auricular cartilage was harvested from 3 young swine. The cartilage was digested, processed, and suspended and a cell culture was obtained. The cells were then suspended in 3 mL of a 30% solution of a biodegradable polymer (Pluronic F-127) (polyethylene oxide/polypropylene oxide copolymer) at a cellular concentration of 50 x 10(6) cells/mL. This suspension was then implanted subcutaneously into each pig's dorsum. Eight weeks after implantation, the cartilage

17-DMAG regulates p21 expression to induce chondrogenesis in vitro and in vivo.

Cartilage degeneration after injury affects a significant percentage of the population, including those that will go on to develop osteoarthritis (OA). Like humans, most mammals, including mice, are incapable of regenerating injured cartilage. Interestingly, it has previously been shown that p21 (Cdkn1a) knockout (p21-/-) mice demonstrate auricular (ear) cartilage regeneration. However, the loss of p21 expression is highly correlated with the development of numerous types of cancer and autoimmune diseases, limiting the therapeutic translation of these findings. Therefore, in this study, we emp

Usefulness of resorbable plate in auricular elevation in two-stage microtia reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Achieving a well-reconstructed retroauricular sulcus with satisfactory projection and a sufficiently deep retroauricular sulcus is important and at the same time challenging. The selection of the support material is crucial to obtain a sustainable, deep sulcus. The costal cartilage is the conventional material of choice. However, risk of slippage of inserted cartilage and donor site morbidity exists. Resorbable plates are durable, easy to secure and can be easily modified into desired shape. The current study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of using a resorbable plate for au

Cadherin-11 promotes the mechanical strength of engineered elastic cartilage by enhancing extracellular matrix synthesis and microstructure.

Limitations of current treatments for auricular cartilage defects have prompted the field of auricular cartilage tissue engineering. To date, inducing the formation of cartilaginous constructs with biochemical and biomechanical properties of native tissue is the final aim. Through hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry staining, Cadherin-11(CDH11) was confirmed highly expressed in the auricular cartilage tissue and chondrocytes. In vitro, by knockdown and overexpression of CDH11 in chondrocytes, CDH11 was demonstrated to promote the expression of collagen type II (COL2A), elastin (ELN), ag
