A rare case of low voltage electrical injury leading to bilateral femur fractures and vertebral body fractures: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Low voltage electrical injuries (less than 1000 V) can produce enough tetany to cause fractures, usually of the upper extremities. Simultaneous bilateral fractures of the femoral neck are an extremely rare occurrence. It is even more uncommon for a young healthy male to suffer significant fractures from a low voltage injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male attempted suicide by filling a bathtub with water and getting into it prior to dropping a blender into the water. He experienced full body convulsions but remained awake throughout the entire event. In the

Satellite cell proliferation and myofiber cross-section area increase after electrical stimulation following sciatic nerve crush injury in rats.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation has been recommended as an effective therapy to prevent muscle atrophy after nerve injury. However, the effect of electrical stimulation on the proliferation of satellite cells in denervated muscles has not yet been fully elucidated. This study was aimed to evaluate the changes in satellite cell proliferation after electrical stimulation in nerve injury and to determine whether these changes are related to the restoration of myofiber cross-section area (CSA). METHODS: Sciatic nerve crush injury was performed in 48 male Sprague-Dawley rats. In half (24/48) of

High frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with diphenidol administration results in an additive antiallodynic effect in rats following chronic constriction injury.

The impact of coadministration of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and diphenidol is not well established. Here we estimated the effects of diphenidol in combination with TENS on mechanical allodynia and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. Using an animal chronic constriction injury (CCI) model, the rat was estimated for evidence of mechanical sensitivity via von Frey hair stimulation and TNF-α expression in the sciatic nerve using the ELISA assay. High frequency (100Hz) TENS or intraperitoneal injection of diphenidol (2.0μmol/kg) was applied daily, starting on postop

Outcome and treatment of electrical injury with immediate median and ulnar nerve palsy at the wrist: a retrospective review and a survey of members of the American Burn Association.

Electrical injury to the upper extremity with immediate median and ulnar nerve palsy at the wrist is uncommon but devastating. When it does occur, the immediate clinical questions are (1) will the nerves recover, and (2) should the carpal tunnel and Guyon's canal be released? Our review of the literature did not answer these two questions. Therefore, we reviewed our experience with such patients and surveyed approximately 10% of the physician members of the American Burn Association. We reviewed approximately 80 patients with electrical injuries treated between January 1983 and September 1988,

Analysis of injury severity in low-speed electric vehicle crashes: Insights from partially temporally constrained modeling and out-of-sample prediction.

OBJECTIVE: Low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs), as an important component of global micromobility systems, are increasingly prevalent in mixed traffic environments in developing countries. However, existing studies have paid limited attention to crash causation heterogeneity and temporal instability under open-road conditions. This study aims to investigate the temporal instability and unobserved heterogeneity of crashes involving three-wheeled and four-wheeled low-speed electric vehicles in China. METHODS: Crash data from Shandong Province, China, covering the period from 2021 to 2023, were

Non-osteoporotic L4 vertebral compression fracture after low-voltage electrical injury without secondary trauma: A rare case report.

Electrical injury is a common occupational hazard; however, vertebral compression fracture caused by low-voltage electric shock in the absence of secondary fall- or impact-related trauma is extremely rare. We report the case of a man in his early 40s who developed severe lower back pain and inability to walk immediately after a 220-volt alternating-current electrical injury at work. He remained conscious and sustained no fall or blunt trauma. Imaging examinations, including radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, revealed an acute L4 vertebral compression fracture. Du

Spinal electrical stimulation to improve sympathetic autonomic functions needed for movement and exercise after spinal cord injury: a scoping clinical review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunction. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disease are highly prevalent after SCI. Although inadequate voluntary activation of skeletal muscle contributes, it is absent or inadequate activation of thoracic spinal sympathetic neural circuitry and suboptimal activation of homeostatic (cardiovascular and temperature) and metabolic support systems that truly limits exercise capacity, particularly for those with cervical SCI. Thus, when electrical spinal cord stimulation (SCS) studies aimed at improving motor functio

A Therapeutic Strategy for Lower Motor Neuron Disease and Injury Integrating Neural Stem Cell Transplantation and Functional Electrical Stimulation in a Rat Model.

Promising treatments for upper motor neuron disease are emerging in which motor function is restored by brain-computer interfaces and functional electrical stimulation. At present, such technologies and procedures are not applicable to lower motor neuron disease. We propose a novel therapeutic strategy for lower motor neuron disease and injury integrating neural stem cell transplantation with our new functional electrical stimulation control system. In a rat sciatic nerve transection model, we transplanted embryonic spinal neural stem cells into the distal stump of the peripheral nerve to rein

Vascularized Muscle Flap to Reduce Wound Breakdown During Flexible Electrode-Mediated Functional Electrical Stimulation After Peripheral Nerve Injury.

The success of devices delivering functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been hindered by complications related to implants including skin breakdown and subsequent wound dehiscence. Our hypothesis was that a vascularized muscle flap along the dorsal surface of an epimysial electrode would prevent skin breakdown during FES therapy to treat atrophy of the gastrocnemius muscle during peripheral nerve injury. Resection of a tibial nerve segment with subsequent electrode implantation on the dorsal surfaces of the gastrocnemius muscle was performed on ten Lewis rats. In five rats, the biceps fe

Electrical Stimulation Followed by Mesenchymal Stem Cells Improves Anal Sphincter Anatomy and Function in a Rat Model at a Time Remote From Injury.

BACKGROUND: We have explored cell-based therapy to aid anal sphincter repair, but a conditioning injury is required to direct stem cells to the site of injury because symptoms usually manifest at a time remote from injury. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effect of local electrical stimulation followed by mesenchymal stem cell delivery on anal sphincter regeneration at a time remote from injury. DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: With the use of a rat model, electrical stimulation parameters and cell delivery route were selected based on in vivo cytokine expression and luciferase-labele

Novel method for earlier detection of phrenic nerve injury during cryoballoon applications for electrical isolation of pulmonary veins in patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic electrogram recording during cryoballoon ablation (CB-A) of atrial fibrillation is commonly used to predict phrenic nerve palsy (PNP). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate a novel method for predicting PNP at an earlier stage to prevent sustained PNP. METHODS: A total of 197 patients undergoing CB-A were enrolled. We attempted to detect PNP using fluoroscopic images of diaphragmatic contractions and by monitoring diaphragmatic compound motor action potentials (CMAPs) provoked by superior vena cava (SVC) and left subclavian vein (LCV) pacing during
