Significance: Electrical stimulation (ES) is a therapeutic intervention that may help specialists facilitate wound healing rates. The purpose of this section is to compile the available animal research regarding the effectiveness of ES on the injury potential, healing rate, cellular and molecular proliferation, mechanical properties, and survival rate of skin flaps. Recent Advances: Regardless of the type of ES current and polarity used, most of the animal experimental evidence suggests that application of ES can facilitate wound healing. However, treatment time should be sufficiently long to

Motoneurons die following spinal cord trauma and with neurological disease. Intact axons reinnervate nearby muscle fibers to compensate for the death of motoneurons, but when an entire motoneuron pool dies, there is complete denervation. To reduce denervation atrophy, we have reinnervated muscles in Fisher rats from local transplants of embryonic motoneurons in peripheral nerve. Since growth of axons from embryonic neurons is activity dependent, our aim was to test whether brief electrical stimulation of the neurons immediately after transplantation altered motor unit numbers and muscle proper

The ability to improve peripheral neural transmission would have significant therapeutic potential in medicine. A technology of this kind could be used to restore and/or enhance sensory function in individuals with depressed sensory function, such as older adults or patients with peripheral neuropathies. The goal of this study was to investigate if a new paradigm of subsensory electrical noise stimulation enhances somatosensory function. Vibration (50Hz) was applied with a Neurothesiometer to the plantar aspect of the foot in the presence or absence of subsensory electrical noise (1/f type). T

We need to find novel ways of increasing exercise participation, particularly in those populations who find it difficult to participate in voluntary exercise. In recent years researchers have started to investigate the potential for using electrical stimulation to artificially stimulate a pattern of muscle activity that would induce a physiological response consistent with cardiovascular exercise. Work to date has indicated that this is best achieved by using a stimulation protocol that results in rapid rhythmical isometric contractions of the large leg muscle groups at sub tetanic frequencies

This pilot study aimed to show that information-free stimulation of the tongue can improve behavioral measures and induce sustained neuromodulation of the balance-processing network in individuals with balance dysfunction. Twelve balance-impaired subjects received one week of cranial nerve non-invasive neuromodulation (CN-NINM). Before and after the week of stimulation, postural sway and fMRI activation were measured to monitor susceptibility to optic flow. Nine normal controls also underwent the postural sway and fMRI tests but did not receive CN-NINM. Results showed that before CN-NINM balan

Upper airway occlusion in obstructive sleep apnea has been attributed to a decline in pharyngeal neuromuscular activity occurring in a structurally narrowed airway. Surgical treatment focuses on the correction of anatomic abnormalities, but there is a potential role for activation of the upper airway musculature, especially with stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve and genioglossus muscle. We present evidence from research on upper airway neuromuscular electrical stimulation in animals and humans. We also present results from eight obstructive sleep apnea patients with a fully implanted system

This paper describes a new surface electrical stimulation approach to the production of task-oriented functional hand and finger movements in people with upper extremity paralysis as the result of brain or spinal cord injury. The approach involves the need to first identify ("map") the distribution of the optimal electrical stimulation sites. Multi-channel electrical surface stimulation is then applied to obtain the desired motions. We describe here the grasping of a paper cup by the hand and three-digit pinching induced by this approach in a healthy subject as well as the results of a trainin

Objective. This study aims to investigate the movements of hyolaryngeal structures during the surface electrical stimulation of suprahyoid muscles and to compare these with movements during liquid swallowing. Materials and methods. Twelve volunteers without dysphagia participated in this study. Volunteers swallowed 5 mL of diluted barium liquid, which was recorded videofluoroscopically. They then received surface electrical stimulation at midpoints between the chin and the bilateral edges of the hyoid, and movements were again recorded. Two-dimensional motion analysis was performed and displ

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is an accepted treatment method for paresis or paralysis after spinal cord and head injury as well as stroke and other neurological upper motor neuron disorders. At the beginning, FES worked like an electrophysiological brace for the correction of drop foot of patients after a stroke. When analyzing early accomplishments, it becomes evident that FES was influenced rather by technological and biomedical engineering development than by contemporary knowledge on neurocontrol of movement in individuals with upper motor neuron paralysis. Nevertheless, with be
