Quantitative electroencephalography in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: relationship to CSF outflow resistance and the CSF tap-test.

Quantitative electroencephalography from the occipito-parietal region, gait, and psychometric tests were performed in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) before and after drainage of 40 ml CSF. The results were compared to those in demented controls. The EEG results were also analyzed with respect to possible correlations with clinical, CSF dynamics, and psychometric variables. Significant differences between NPH patients and demented controls were not found neither in baseline EEG variables nor regarding the CSF tap-test-related change in EEG. The EEG-response to the …

Electroencephalography in Subjective Cognitive Decline and Mild Cognitive Impairment: Systematic Review of Biomarkers, Classification, and Prognostic Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are heterogeneous clinical states that may represent early or at-risk stages of Alzheimer disease (AD) and other dementias in some individuals. Improved characterization and risk stratification in these populations may facilitate timely evaluation and intervention. Electroencephalography (EEG), a noninvasive, cost-effective neurophysiological technique with high temporal resolution, holds significant potential for elucidating neural mechanisms and providing candidate neurophysiological markers associated with SC…

Classification of neurodevelopmental disorders and typical development using deep learning and a portable patch-type electroencephalography device.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in children and often co-occur (ASD + ADHD), complicating the diagnosis. The diagnostic process is lengthy and subjective, relying heavily on expert knowledge, which limits accessibility. Electroencephalography (EEG) offers potential as a biomarker but requires skilled technicians for measurements and can be stressful for children with NDDs. This study aimed to provide a more accessible diagnostic support tool. We used a portable EEG device with a low participant bu…

Stereo-electroencephalography-guided cross-electrode radiofrequency thermocoagulation in focal epilepsy: A review of current methodologies and outcomes.

Advances in stereo-electroencephalography-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (SEEG-guided RFTC) have led to the development of cross-electrode RFTC, which has been shown to result in significantly larger lesions and higher seizure-freedom rates compared to standard RFTC methods. Given the novelty of cross-electrode RFTC, herein we review the reported surgical techniques and treatment-related outcomes to date to identify current research gaps and future directions. Ten articles were identified for review including 187 participants who underwent cross-electrode RFTC. Hypothalamic hamartoma …

A Cost-Effective and Minimally Invasive Protocol for Chronic Multi-Site Electroencephalography Recording in Freely Moving Mice.

Electroencephalography (EEG) serves as a fundamental tool for tracking electrical activity in the brain and has become increasingly important in both clinical diagnostics and preclinical animal research. While rodent EEG offers a powerful platform for modeling human neurological disorders, long-term recordings are often limited by the high cost, invasiveness, or technical complexity of existing systems. Here, we present a reliable, accessible, economically viable, and minimally intrusive protocol for chronic, multi-site cortical EEG acquisition in freely moving mice. The technique involves fab…

Amplitude-Integrated/Continuous Electroencephalography for Early Detection of Low Cardiac Output After Chest Closure in an Infant.

BACKGROUND: Weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass in pediatric cardiac surgery is challenging, especially after prolonged procedures. Delayed chest closure may be necessary in cases of low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS) to support hemodynamic recovery. Although near-infrared spectroscopy is standard for neuromonitoring, amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) and continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) are emerging tools. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 6-month-old infant with transposition of the great arteries who required delayed chest closure after surgical repair. LCOS re…

Electroencephalography (EEG) for Neurological Prognostication in Post-Anoxic Coma Following Cardiac Arrest and Its Relationship to Outcome.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cardiac arrest may cause significant hypoxic-ischemic injury leading to coma, seizures, myoclonic jerks, or status epilepticus. Mortality is high, but accurate prognostication is challenging. A multimodal approach is employed, in which electroencephalography (EEG) forms a key part with several recognised patterns of prognostic significance. METHODS: In this retrospective study, clinical and qualitative features of the EEG of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kingston General Hospital following cardiac arrest from 2017 to 2020 were reviewed. The study…

Analysis of the Correlation between Frontal Alpha Asymmetry of Electroencephalography and Short-Term Subjective Well-Being Changes.

Subjective well-being (SWB) describes how well people experience and evaluate their current condition. Previous studies with electroencephalography (EEG) have shown that SWB can be related to frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA). While those studies only considered a single SWB score for each experimental session, our goal is to investigate such a correlation for individuals with a possibly different SWB every 60 or 30 s. Therefore, we conducted two experiments with 30 participants each. We used different temperature and humidity settings and asked the participants to periodically rate their SWB. We …

Early developmental electroencephalography abnormalities, neonatal seizures, and induced spasms in a mouse model of tuberous sclerosis complex.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is one of the most common genetic causes of epilepsy. Seizures in TSC typically first present in infancy or early childhood, including focal seizures and infantile spasms. Infantile spasms in TSC are particularly characteristic in its strong responsiveness to vigabatrin. Although a number of mouse models of epilepsy in TSC have been described, there are very limited electroencephalographic (EEG) or seizure data during the preweanling neonatal and infantile-equivalent mouse periods. Tsc1GFAP CKO mice are a well-characterized mouse model of epilepsy in
