The role of quantitative electromyography (EMG) in horses suspected of acute and chronic grass sickness.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Clinical evidence of motor neuron involvement in equine grass sickness (EGS) has not been reported. HYPOTHESIS: Quantitative electromyography (EMG) analysis can elucidate subtle changes of the lower motor neuron system present in horses with EGS, performed ante mortem. METHODS: Fourteen horses diagnosed clinically with acute, subacute or chronic EGS were examined and quantitative EMG performed. Previously published data on healthy horses and horses with proven lower motor neuron disease (LMND) were used as controls. In 8 horses post mortem examination was pe…

Microdialysis and electromyography of experimental muscle fatigue in healthy volunteers and patients with mitochondrial myopathy.

Consecutive 60-min microdialysis samples were taken from the tibial anterior muscle in 11 healthy subjects and 4 patients with mitochondrial myopathy before (2-3 samples) and after (3-4 samples, 2 controls and 1 patient excluded) sustained isometric foot dorsiflexions. Before exercise, mean concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, hypoxanthine, urate, aspartate, and glutamate did not significantly differ between controls and patients. After exercise, the controls showed significantly increased concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, and urate, decreased hypoxanthine, and no change in aspartate and gl

The timing of congenital brachial plexus injury: a study of electromyography findings in the newborn piglet.

OBJECTIVE: Permanent congenital brachial plexus palsy is a recognized serious complication associated with shoulder dystocia. The timing and etiology of this injury remains controversial. Previous authorities have used adult-derived, non-brachial plexus data to extrapolate the anticipated timing for electromyographic denervation changes to date such injuries in the newborn. With use of a domestic swine model, this investigation tests the hypothesis that electromyographic evidence of brachial plexus denervation in the newborn is temporally different than that in the adult. STUDY DESIGN: Five h

Electromyography of the external anal sphincter muscle during urodynamic testing in children with meningomyelocele.

In this study the correlation between the electromyographic examination of the external sphincter muscle and the urodynamic findings in patients with meningomyelocele was evaluated. Urodynamic testing, consisting of cystometry with bladder, urethral and abdominal pressure monitoring was performed with simultaneous electromyography of the external and sphincter muscle in 61 children, 29 boys and 32 girls, divided in groups according to age and to the level of lesion. Normal urodynamic studies were always correlated with normal external sphincter electromyography. In all patients with a high les…

A new method for correlating pancreatic and biliary duct pressures and sphincter of Oddi electromyography.

Myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum was correlated with pancreatic and biliary duct pressures in eight opossums, in both the fasted and fed states. Four bipolar electrode pairs were implanted in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum. A polyethylene T tube was placed in the pancreatic duct. The common duct was cannulated through a small bile duct. This method allowed pressure recording for several weeks and avoided interference with the flow of bile or pancreatic juice into the duodenum. The frequency of slow waves was the same in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum (19 per m

Electromyography of the sphincter of Oddi. Technic and experimental results in the rabbit: Effect of certain drugs.

Electromyographic activity of the sphincter of Oddi was recorded by means of bipolar suction electrodes applied to the rabbit, in which the sphincter of Oddi is easily identifiable and independent of the duodenal musculature. Seventy animals were investigated (20 in vitro and 50 in vivo). The bile duct was catheterized so that the pressure could be recorded. The sphincteric traces show basal activity consisting of bursts of 1-8 spike potentials which recur every 3-5 seconds on average and are accompanied by a transient rise in biliary pressure. The patterns are different from those recorded fo

Deep Learning outperforms physicians in myopathy and neuropathy classification based on Needle Electromyography Signal.

Needle electromyography (nEMG) is a valuable tool for diagnosing patients with neuromuscular diseases. However, it is labor-intensive and is prone to diagnostic inaccuracies stemming from human biases. To address these challenges, we validated an nEMG diagnosis-aiding system with minimal preprocessing using deep learning model to classify patients into three categories: normal, myopathy, and neuropathy. Using 376 nEMG signals from 57 patients from a tertiary university hospital database through nested k-fold cross validation, deep learning model surpassed the classification performance of six …

A Transfer Learning Approach for Toe Walking Recognition Using Surface Electromyography on Leg Muscles.

Gait is a complex motor process that involves the coordination and synchronization of various body parts through continuous interaction with … sports or social activities. This study proposes a new approach to detect toe walking using surface Electromyography (sEMG) on lower limbs. sEMG sensors, by measuring the electrical activity of muscles, can see signals before the movement corresponding to muscle activation, contributing to an early detection of a possible problem. The sEMG signal presents signific …

Social Media Use and Jaw Motor Activity: Insights From Electromyography and Self-Report Data.

BACKGROUND: Oral behaviors (OBs) are recognized risk factors for temporomandibular disorders. Social media use has been reported to be linked with stress, a key regulator of jaw motor activity. Whether social media use increases the incidence of OBs remains undetermined. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of social media use on jaw motor activity. METHODS: Seventy-two individuals (36 females, 36 males; 22.4 ± 2.8 years) completed an online survey assessing their screen habits and OBs using the oral behaviour checklist (OBC). A subset of 30 healthy participants (15 females, 15 males; 22.2 ±

Multidirectional Trunk Movements Reveal Hidden Symmetry Loss in Stroke: An Electromyography-Based Comparative Study.

Background and Objectives: Stroke and hemiplegia disrupts symmetrical activation of skeletal and abdominal muscles, impairing trunk control and functional movement. Although asymmetry is also present in healthy adults, its magnitude and patterns differ with neurological impairment. Understanding trunk muscle symmetry across functional tasks in healthy individuals and patients with stroke is essential for targeted rehabilitation strategies. Materials and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted including healthy adults and patients with stroke. Muscle activation symmetry of th

EMGCipher: Decoding Electromyography for Upper-limb Gesture Classification with Explainable AI for Resource Optimization.

Assistive limb devices often employ surface electromyography (sEMG) and deep learning (DL) models for gesture classification. While DL models effectively classify diverse upper-limb gestures, their decision-making mechanisms often lack transparency. To address this, we introduce EMGCipher, an interpretable DL framework for upper-limb gesture classification using sEMG. It aims to bridge the gap between interpretability and performance by combining low-level sEMG feature representations with DL model-derived knowledge, quantitatively assessing the probabilistic significance of input sensors and …

Wrist Motion Assessment in Tennis Players using Three-Dimensional Motion Capture and Dynamic Electromyography.

Background  Tennis players often present with ulnar-sided wrist pain, which may reflect repetitive stress and/or faulty mechanics. There is a role for investigating the biomechanics of tennis strokes and how they may relate to wrist pathology. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether three-dimensional motion capture technology and dynamic electromyography (EMG), when used to study groundstrokes in elite junior tennis players, reveals patterns of upper extremity motion that may correlate with the development of clinically relevant pathology. Case Description  Three-dimensional kinem…

Optimal timing of needle electromyography to diagnose lesion severity in traumatic radial nerve injury.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: In patients with traumatic radial nerve injury (RNI), the chance of spontaneous recovery must be balanced against the benefits of early surgical reconstruction. We aimed to explore the time-specific value of needle electromyography (NEMG) to diagnose nerve lesion severity. METHODS: In this retrospective diagnostic accuracy study at Leiden Nerve Center, patients at least 12 years of age with RNI caused by fractures or fracture treatment were included. The sensitivity and specificity of the patients' first NEMG examination were assessed, stratified by the timing after the ner…
