Medical Device Electromagnetic Immunity Testing for Exposure to Consumer Wireless Power Transfer Systems - Part I: Emission Characteristics.

The use of wireless power transfer (WPT) for charging consumer electronics has grown in recent years, owing to its convenience. The growing adoption of WPT in professional and home healthcare environments is raising concerns about the potential risks of interference with medical devices. Due to inadequate information regarding the emission characteristics of commercially available WPT systems, the electromagnetic (EM) immunity test protocols of many current applicable consensus standards to medical devices have not been evaluated for their appropriateness in assessing interference caused by su

Transesophageal indirect atrial pacing for open-heart surgery in children.

BACKGROUND: Transesophageal atrial pacing (TAP) has been successfully applied for clinical use for more than 30 years. Not only for cardiac pacing, or diagnosis and treatment of rhythmic disturbance but also for assessing the presence and severity of coronary artery disease and maintaining adequate heart rate can TAP provide satisfactory effect. In this study we applied TAP on children undergoing the cardiac surgery to evaluate its efficacy and side effects during such major surgery. METHODS: Twenty-four children (15 M and 9 F) undergoing open-heart surgery with informed consents were include

Mobility-assistive technology in progressive neuromuscular disease.

Mobility-assistive technologies allow patients with neuromuscular disease to interact with peers and the community. In children, they also serve to facilitate development. Lack of access to appropriate assistive technology, especially in regards to mobility, can have adverse developmental consequences. There are multiple options for mobility devices and methods for their control. These devices can be integrated with other electronics to facilitate the control of a variety of devices in the environment. The clinician should assess which devices are best based on the patient's, caregivers', and

[4-channel electroencephalographic amplifier with integrated microcircuits].

To conduct electroencephalographic investigations of stationary and moving objects a small-sized 4-channel amplifier built with integrated microcircuits has been developed. Each channel includes a pre-amplifier, main amplifier, calibrator, high and low frequency filters and a power pack. The adoption of integrated microcircuits enables it to locate the pre-amplifiers directly on the object of investigations. The device is highly sensitive and secures a greater degree of noise-protection.

Dynamic and living devices for overcoming fibrosis of implanted biomaterials.

The fibrotic encapsulation of implantable medical devices reduces diffusion-based mass transport and electrical conductivity between the tissue and implant, limiting many devices to weeks-long rather than years-long lifetimes. Most strategies to overcome fibrosis take a passive, materials-driven approach to mitigate the chemical and mechanical mismatch at the tissue-implant interface through superficial or structural implant modifications. Recent advancements in microfabrication and mechanotherapy have led engineers to incorporate smart and active mechanical actuation systems into implantable

Thermally Degradable Inductors with Water-Resistant Metal Leaf/Oleogel Wires and Gelatin/Chitosan Hydrogel Films.

Ingestible electronics monitor biometric information from outside the body. Making them with harmless or digestible materials will contribute to further reducing the burden on the patient's oral intake. Here, considering that the inductive part plays an important role in communications, we demonstrate a degradable inductor fabricated with harmless substances. Such a transient component must meet conflicting requirements for both operation and disassembly. Therefore, we integrated a substrate made of gelatin, a thermally degradable material, and a precision coil pattern made of edible gold or s

Security Driven Product Design for Open-Source Medical Syringe Infusion Pumps.

Open-source medical devices, including syringe infusion pumps, have gained popularity due to their cost-effectiveness and adaptability. However, integrating open-source components, such as their open-source software controlling system, raises significant cybersecurity concerns. This paper investigates cybersecurity vulnerability targeting an open-source medical syringe pump. We present a DDoS attack that alters the pump's operation, potentially leading to over-infusion or under-infusion of medication. We then assess the implications of these security flaws on patient safety and device reliabil

Finding New Ways To Treat Tremors.

An estimated ten million people in the United States have a condition known as essential tremor (ET). Yet although it's been recognized for over a century-it was originally known as senile tremor-there is relatively little awareness of it as a distinct medical condition. Sometimes mistaken for Parkinson's disease, ET can lead to shaking of the arms and hands, and sometimes the head or torso. When severe, it can interfere with eating or drinking, writing, dressing, and even make some tasks impossible. Now, new approaches for treating the condition are emerging, potentially offering options to m

Salomón Hakim, MD (1922-2011): A honeymoon with Neurosurgery.

Salomón Hakim (1922-2011) was a Colombian neurosurgeon and brain scientist This biography examines the social and cultural background through which he emerged as an inquisitive and multi-dimensional surgeon-scientist, and his lifelong contributions to the specialty of neurosurgery. With empirical knowledge in applied medical physics, electronics, electricity and chemistry, he understood the paradoxical phenomenon of symptomatic hydrocephalus with normal cerebrospinal fluid pressure. This ultimately led Hakim to describe in exquisite detail the physics of the cranial cavity and brain hydrodynam

Design and Study of a Portable High-frequency Ventilator for Clinical Applications.

Treatment costs for ventilator-dependent patients are a substantial burden not only for their family but also for medical systems in general. Recently, using high-frequency ventilators have been shown to reduce the risk of lung injury through low-volume airflow. However, the machines used today remain bulky, costly, and only for use in hospital settings. To provide intermediate therapy for patients between hospitalization and complete discharge, a portable, light-weight high-frequency ventilator is an urgent need. This work presents the design of a portable high-frequency ventilator and a stud

Establishment of High Channel-Count Packaging in Active Implantable Medical Devices for Neuroprosthesis.

Neuroprostheses have contributed extensively to humankind's capacity to treat disease and injury. Hearing loss is routinely overcome; pain is controlled; and myriad neurological, sensory, motor, and psychological disorders are managed through interventions involving neuromodulation. Fabrication of active implantable medical devices (AIMDs) often relies on highly skilled operators, leading to high costs, reliability challenges, and limitations to further device miniaturization and manufacturing output. Extending AIMD benefits to other disorders may also require a substantial increase in the num

Green Synthesis of Copper Nanoparticles utilising the Maillard Reaction.

A new approach for the fabrication copper nanoparticles by a wet chemical reduction method is reported. The natural resources arginine as amino compound and several monosaccharides (xylose, ribose, galactose and glucose) react characteristically performing an Amadori rearrangement followed by a Maillard type reaction. This reaction carried out in an aqueous solution ensures an environmentally friendly way of reducing copper(II) ions leading to the formation of the desired nanoparticles. By changing the concentration of the amino acid, simultaneously acting as a complexing agent, it is possible
